Darwin Day with Nick Schweitzer – Evolution in the Courts

February 14, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

This will be our annual Darwin Day meeting. Refreshments will be served. Save room for dessert!

Presentation:
Nick will speak on the history of challenges in state and federal courts to the teaching of evolution in public schools starting with the Scopes trial in 1925, and the adaptation (evolution) of those challenges to the changing environment imposed over time by the courts, from Biblical Creationism to Intelligent Design, and possibly beyond.

Bio:
John Nicholas (“Nick”) Schweitzer is a retired attorney living in Madison, Wisconsin. His legal field was professional ethics, serving as an administrative law judge for the state agency that issued and regulated licenses for scores of professions. He also taught legal ethics as an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and conducted attorney discipline hearings for the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Utterly unrelated to that professional focus, he fancies himself an “amateur scientist,” promoting science and reason in various ways.
