Darwin Day at SDSU

February 12

Darwin Day is an international celebration held annually on February 12 that honors the life and legacy of Charles Darwin, the British naturalist best known for his groundbreaking work on the theory of evolution by natural selection. The day aims to promote scientific thought, curiosity, and intellectual courage, as well as to highlight the importance of science in understanding the natural world and addressing modern challenges.

The origins of Darwin Day can be traced back to the late 20th century, when individual groups and institutions began commemorating Darwin’s contributions to science on his birthday. The idea gained traction in the 1990s, particularly with the formation of the International Darwin Day Foundation, which advocated for broader recognition of the day. By the early 2000s, Darwin Day had become a global phenomenon, celebrated by schools, universities, museums, and science advocacy organizations through lectures, exhibitions, and community events.

To celebrate Darwin Day, SDSU’s Biology Department will host a celebration on campus Wednesday, February 12. Below is the schedule of evolution-oriented events that will honor this biological legend all day long!
