In 2015 International Darwin Day went through an exciting re-brand, launching a new energetic logo and website.
The logo, designed by Spectrum Experience, was inspired by Charles Darwin’s own drawings. Spectrum Experience’s brand identity guide explains the symbolism:
Galapagos finches are, in many ways, unremarkable birds. With dark bills and dull streaks of brown or black, the island songbirds hardly seem inspiring at first glance. Yet for Charles Darwin, the first naturalist ever to collect them, the structural gradation and diversity of these finches held the key to a radical new idea: natural selection.
As Jonathan Weiner writes in his Pulitzer Prize winning book, The Beak of the Finch, the portraits of Darwin’s finches in textbooks and encyclopedias “have now introduced so many generations to Darwinism that they have become international symbols of the process, totems of evolution, like the overshot brows and cumulus beard of Darwin himself.”
What better representative of an international holiday celebrating Darwin’s intellectual bravery and commitment to scientific thinking than the iconic finch that inspired his theory?
If you are a local organizer, speaker, or blogger who would like to use our iconic logo for promotional materials, articles, or publicity surrounding Darwin Day you’re welcome to download our logo below.
