SUMMARY:The story of the human brain\, with Jim Al-Khalili
DESCRIPTION:The most remarkable and mysterious object in the cosmos sits inside our heads. Our brains\, the centres of consciousness\, logic\, and creativity\, have nearly 100 billion neurons forming some 100 trillion connections\, a complexity found nowhere else in the universe. \nSo how did the conditions on planet earth drive its evolutionary marvel through planetary catastrophes and epic conflicts\, through death\, sex\, and love. Based on his forthcoming two-part Horizon special on the BBC\, Jim will share what he has learned from geologists\, palaeontologists\, neuroscientists\, behavioural psychologists – and from having had his own brain scanned\, imaged and 3D-printed. \nIn this Darwin Day Lecture\, Jim Al-Khalili will take us through the brain’s 700 million-year evolutionary history: how it developed from simple nerve cells to control movement and detect light in early organisms into the remarkable system that defines what it means to be human. \nAbout Professor Jim Al-Khalili\nJim Al-Khalili is an academic\, author\, broadcaster\, and one of the UK’s best known science communicators. In the UK\, he is most familiar as the host of the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme\, The Life Scientific. As an academic\, Jim is a quantum physicist at the University of Surrey where he is Distinguished Professor Emeritus. He received his PhD in theoretical physics in 1989 and has published over 150 papers in the field. \nAs well as his regular articles in the media\, he has written 15 books on popular science and the history of science\, between them translated into 26 languages. His book on Medieval Arabic science\, Pathfinders (The House of Wisdom in the US)\, was shortlisted for the Warwick Prize\, and his 2020 book\, The World According to Physics\, was shortlisted for the Royal Society Book Prize. Many people will also know him from the many TV science documentaries he has hosted over the past two decades\, such as Atom\, Shock and Awe: the Story of Electricity\, Everything and Nothing\, and the Bafta-nominated Chemistry: a volatile history. \nJim is a past president of both the British Science Association and Humanists UK\, and is a recipient of the Royal Society Michael Faraday medal and the Wilkins-Bernal-Medawar medal\, the Institute of Physics Kelvin Medal\, and the Stephen Hawking medal. He is a fellow of the Royal Society and Honorary Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering\, the Institute of Physics\, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He received an OBE from the Queen in 2007 and later a CBE in 2021\, both for ‘services to science and public engagement in STEM’. He has received honorary doctorates from nine universities. He is a trustee and commissioner on the board of the 1851 Royal Commission\, and a Fellow of the Science Museums Group.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Part 1: James E. Strick
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Darwin Day with a keynote lecture by James E. Strick\, professor and chair of the Science\, Technology and Society Program at Franklin and Marshall College. \nThis year’s presentation delves into Darwin’s nuanced and often private perspectives on the origin of life. Though widely assumed to connect his theory of evolution with life arising through natural chemical processes\, Darwin’s public and private remarks reveal ambivalence and evolving positions. Dr. Strick will contextualize these perspectives within Victorian debates on spontaneous generation\, germ theory and the broader implications for modern origin-of-life research\, including NASA’s quest to understand the universe’s potential to harbor life beyond Earth. \nPrior to the lecture (3:30 p.m.)\, enjoy a special exhibit of Darwin-related items from the Mark Samuels Lasner Collection and Special Collections\, including early editions of Origin of Species\, The Voyage of the Beagle\, and The Descent of Man\, as well as a letter by Darwin\, a book from his personal library\, and a photograph by Julia Margaret Camero. \nLight refreshments sponsored by the Friends of the University of Delaware Library.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day at SDSU
DESCRIPTION:Darwin Day is an international celebration held annually on February 12 that honors the life and legacy of Charles Darwin\, the British naturalist best known for his groundbreaking work on the theory of evolution by natural selection. The day aims to promote scientific thought\, curiosity\, and intellectual courage\, as well as to highlight the importance of science in understanding the natural world and addressing modern challenges. \nThe origins of Darwin Day can be traced back to the late 20th century\, when individual groups and institutions began commemorating Darwin’s contributions to science on his birthday. The idea gained traction in the 1990s\, particularly with the formation of the International Darwin Day Foundation\, which advocated for broader recognition of the day. By the early 2000s\, Darwin Day had become a global phenomenon\, celebrated by schools\, universities\, museums\, and science advocacy organizations through lectures\, exhibitions\, and community events. \nTo celebrate Darwin Day\, SDSU’s Biology Department will host a celebration on campus Wednesday\, February 12. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Darwin Day lecture. This years talk is titled “Twists and Turns in Teaching Evolution over the Years” by Glenn Branch\, Deputy Director\, National Center for Science Education. \n\nControversies over the teaching of evolution in the public schools have rocked the nation over the past century. Evolution’s foes have consistently used the same arguments\, but their ambitions have shifted\, from banning the teaching of evolution through balancing it with a supposed alternative to blunting it by misrepresenting evolution as scientifically controversial. In his talk\, Glenn Branch of the National Center for Science Education will discuss the causes\, history\, and consequences of these controversies\, with a special emphasis on events in Michigan. \nGlenn Branch is deputy director of the National Center for Science Education\, a nonprofit organization that defends the integrity of American science education against ideological interference. He is the author of numerous articles on evolution education and climate education\, and the co-editor\, with Eugenie C. SUMMARY:Darwin Day Lecture: Darwin and the Art of Botany
DESCRIPTION:With Jim Costa\, Executive Director\, Highlands Biological Station \nDate: Wednesday\, February 12\, 2025\nTime: 7:00 – 8:30 PM ET; followed by a reception sponsored by the Carolina Biodiversity Collaborative\nLocation: Hybrid – Virtual and In-person attendance options\nFee: Free; preregistration required \nJoin Highlands Biological Station executive director Dr. Jim Costa for an illustrated exploration of Darwin’s impact on the world of botany\, through the lens of beautiful botanical art. \nCharles Darwin is best known for his work on the evolution of animals\, but in fact a large part of his contribution to the natural sciences is focused on plants. His observations are crucial to our modern understanding of so much about plant biology\, from the amazing pollination process of orchids to plant carnivory to the way that vines climb. Darwin scholar Jim Costa teamed up with botanical artist Bobbi Angell to explore Darwin’s fascination with the plant world in their new book Darwin and the Art of Botany: Observations on the Curious World of Plants. \nA celebration of Darwin’s often overlooked botanical interests\, the book spotlights 45 fascinating plants studied by Darwin\, each illustrated with beautiful botanical art selected from the Library at the Oak Spring Garden Foundation. Join us for this talk and come away with a new appreciation of Darwin’s creative botanical investigations\, the plants he studied\, and the ways in which he helped shape our understanding of the world around us.

SUMMARY:The Scopes Trial in History and Folklore
DESCRIPTION:A century ago in Dayton\, Tennessee\, sensation-loving journalists of the 1920s transformed a small-town misdemeanor trial\, brought under a new state law against teaching the theory of evolution in public schools\, into a legendary clash of worldviews pitting populist orator\, politician William Jennings Bryan and libertarian secularist\, attorney Clarence Darrow. Over the ensuing years\, fact and fiction blurred into the mythical version of the Tennessee Monkey Trial celebrated in bestselling books\, Broadway plays\, and Hollywood movies. In his lecture\, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Edward Larson separates history from folklore in relating the story of the Scopes trial then and thereafter. \nEd Larson holds the Darling Chair in Law and is a University Professor of History at Pepperdine University. Recipient of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize in History\, Larson served as Associate Counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives and taught for twenty years at the University of Georgia\, where he chaired the history department. The author of fifteen books and over eighty published articles\, his books include A Magnificent Catastrophe: The Tumultuous Election of 1800; Evolution: The Remarkable History of a Scientific Theory; the Pulitzer Prize-winning Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America’s Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion\, and the New York Times bestsellers\, The Return of George Washington\, 1783-1789 and Franklin & Washington: The Founding Partnership. Larson recently published American Inheritance: Liberty and Slavery in the Birth of a Nation\, 1765-1795. Larson has served as a visiting professor at Yale Law School\, Stanford Law School\, the University of Melbourne\, Leiden University\, and the University of Richmond.

SUMMARY:Evolution Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Essig Museum celebrates the birthdays of Charles Darwin (February 12th\, 1809)\, Alfred Russel Wallace (January 8th\, 1823)\, and Henry Bates (February 8th\, 1825) with special behind-the-scenes tours of our collection in the Valley Life Sciences Building (VLSB). Join us for a special look at our collections featuring beetles collected by Darwin during his Voyage of the Beagle. We will also take a closer look at adaptations – traits that evolved over millions of years to help insects obtain food\, avoid predators\, and find mates. \nIn addition to our tours\, at 10:00am\, February 14\, in room 2063 VLSB\, we will have a special lecture\, as part of our Essig Brunch seminar series\, by Dr. Jim Costa (Executive Director & Professor\, Highlands Biological Station of Western Carolina University) titled “Ardent Beetle Hunters – On the Entomological Enthusiasms of Darwin & Wallace“. Abstract: “When in 1908 Alfred Russel Wallace was asked how it was that of the many people pursuing the question of species origins it was he and Darwin who discovered the principle of natural selection\, his answer surprised his audience. First and most importantly\, he said\, “in early life both Darwin and myself became ardent beetle-hunters.” Indeed\, while finches\, giant tortoises\, and birds-of-paradise loom large in Darwin and Wallace lore\, insects were far more important. In this talk I trace the central role of entomology in the lives and thought of Darwin and Wallace\, from the early inspiration of insect diversity to the ways in which insects provided these naturalists with insights into the evolutionary process.” Jim will also be giving a talk “Alice Eastwood\, Gertrude Jekyll\, and Horticultural History: The Wallace Connection” for Botany Lunch at the UC & Jepson Herbaria at 12 noon on February 14. \nMuseum Tours will begin at 12pm\, 1pm\, 2pm\, 3pm\, and 4pm from the foot of the Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton in VLSB. \nWe will be limiting the number of people in our small exhibit space\, so reserve your free tickets with Eventbrite. Note: There are multiple tour times – check the Select Date and Time options on Eventbrite to choose a time slot. And please consider making a donation using our secure online system to help us continue our mission of research and education.

SUMMARY:2025 Darwin Day Lecture: Nina Jablonski
DESCRIPTION:The Skin in the Game of Evolution: How human skin illustrates Darwinian evolution and much more\nFeaturing Nina Jablonski\, Ph.D.\, Atherton and Evan Pugh Professor Emerita of Anthropology\, Penn State\nNational Academy of Sciences Member\nFriday\, February 14\, 2025 3:00-4:30 p.m. with a light reception following in the Chaiken Family Atrium\, 114 Welch Building \nEverything about human skin\, from its apparent nakedness and potential sweatiness to its many inherent colors and exquisite sensitivity\, is the product of evolution. This lecture will draw upon the rich and diverse evidence from paleontology\, physiology\, climatology\, genetics\, microbiology\, and other fields that has led to our current understanding of the evolution of human skin. It will also explore how the preeminence of vision and language in humans paved the way for our ability to rapidly assess skin traits and then transmit impressions and value judgements of skin color and other traits to others\, often with disastrous results. Learning the basics of skin evolution instills valuable information about Darwinian evolution and a deep appreciation of the beauty of human diversity. It also provides the foundation of an educational curriculum for an anti-racist world. \nCo-sponsored by the Center for Human Evolution and Diversity in the College of the Liberal Arts and Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences

SUMMARY:Darwin Day at the Thomas A. Greene Geological Museum
DESCRIPTION:Darwin Day is a community science outreach event celebrating the life and times of one of the most brilliant and influential Victorian naturalists\, Charles R. Darwin. Darwin was an avid geologist and biologist who most famously developed the theory of natural selection—one of the driving mechanisms behind biological evolution—published in his seminal work: On the Origin of Species. Today\, this theory forms the foundation for many of our natural sciences. Darwin Day is a national celebration of Darwin’s scientific legacy typically held on (or near) his birthday. \nDarwin Day is a free event and open to guests of all ages. Many wonderful geological and biological specimens will be available to observe\, with volunteers on hand to explain their fascinating histories. Learning tables focusing on the natural history of Wisconsin and the contributions of Thomas A. Greene to our understanding of local Wisconsin geology will be spread throughout Lapham Hall\, with many rare and beautiful samples on display from the Thomas A. Greene geological collection. Other activities will be available throughout the day\, including presentations by UWM scientists and guest speakers\, a scavenger hunt\, activities for kids\, and booths featuring many community organizations. There’s something for everyone\, so bring the family and have a full day of science fun! \nThanks\, and we hope to see you there! \nFor more information\, please contact:\nChase Shelburne: shelbur2@uwm.edu \nRob Graziano: graziano@uwm.edu
