SUMMARY:Darwin Day 2023: "FOSSILS: Messages From Ancient Worlds" with Bryce Hand
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual Darwin’s Birthday celebration! This year\, Bryce Hand\, Professor Emeritus of Geology at SU\, will give a talk called FOSSILS: Messages from Ancient Worlds (see below). And this year\, to increase the birthday excitement\, we invite you to bring along your favorite science-themed snack or dessert. \nCome find us at the Community Library of DeWitt & Jamesville\, downstairs in the large Community Room. We will also be Zooming the talk at this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7630427646 \nBryce is always a fascinating speaker\, so please join us! \nAre fossils scarce as those proverbial hens’ teeth? Not at all! In fact\, many of our Syracuse buildings are literally made of them. \nBut are they more than curiosities? Absolutely! \nWithout fossils\, we’d never have known dinosaurs existed. Or pterodactyls. Or trilobites. Biologists would long ago have figured out evolutionary relationships among organisms\, but without fossils they’d have had no way of correctly reconstructing ancestors and intermediaries. \nThis talk will look at some of the ways organisms become part of the fossil record and at the many kinds of information they provide about past environments. And we’ll see why\, without fossils\, it would have been virtually impossible to establish time relationships between sedimentary layers in widely separated regions. \nSimply put\, fossils are important! Our knowledge of Earth’s past would be ever-so diminished without them.

SUMMARY:PRI Darwin Days Keynote Presentation: Great Steps in the History of Life: The Origin of Limbed Vertebrates
DESCRIPTION:The late part of the Devonian Period (385-363 million-years-ago) was a consequential interval in the history of life and includes the origin of limbed vertebrates from finned precursors. We will discuss this evolutionary transition with emphasis on recent discoveries of fossil material from the ends of the Earth\, and our own “backyard”. \nTo join the event\, please register on zoom.

SUMMARY:Richard Lenski\, founder of the long-term evolution experiment\, to deliver 2023 Darwin Day Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Richard Lenski\, a world-renowned evolutionary biologist whose long-term evolution experiment of the microorganism Escherichia coli has been running for over three decades\, will deliver the 2023 Darwin Day Lecture on Wednesday\, Feb. 8. Lenski’s talk\, part of Vanderbilt’s Evolutionary Studies Initiative International Darwin Day celebrations\, will begin at 3:10pm CT in Buttrick 101\, preceded by snacks and soft drinks. The event is free and open to the public. \nLenski is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, a MacArthur fellow\, and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences. In 2021\, Lenski received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for the Study of Evolution. \nResearchers have long-pondered the repeatability of evolution. The paleontologist Stephen J. Gould famously wondered what would happen if we could replay the “tape of life”. Would evolution follow the same paths as it had once before? Or would each rewind result in a totally different outcome? To experimentally approach this question\, Lenski began in 1988 to cultivate 12 independent E. coli populations\, all from the same stock. From this simple experiment\, the LTEE (Long Term Evolution Experiment) was born. 35 years later\, these 12 populations have evolved independently for over 75\,000 generations and have been the subject matter of over 150 studies from researchers all over the world. \nLenski and his collaborators found that the 12 populations show striking similarities in their evolutionary trajectories over time. However\, only one of the 12 populations ever evolved the ability to consume citrate. While there is potential for some striking differences\, Lenski’s experiments suggest that evolution\, under the same general conditions\, will proceed in the same general ways. \nLenski and his collaborators have also done pioneering work on digital evolution using Avida\, an open-source computational platform for studying artificial life. Using Avida\, they showed that the process of evolution can produce complex features from simpler building blocks. Prior to Lenski’s studies\, creationists had argued that such a process was impossible. \nLenski earned his B.A.\, at Oberlin College in Ohio (1976) and his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1982). He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He then spent a year as a visiting professor at Dartmouth College and earned a tenure track position at the University of California in Irvine. He has been a professor at Michigan State University since 1991. \nThe Vanderbilt Evolutionary Studies Initiative was established in August 2019 with the aim of uniting a remarkably diverse array of scholars from a variety of disciplines with broad interests and expertise in evolution-related fields. \nRich Lenski

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Living World Lecture February 10 Features Martha Muñoz
DESCRIPTION:The College of Arts and Sciences Department of Ecology and Evolution will present “Behavior is a motor and a brake for evolution\,” featuring evolutionary biologist Martha Muñoz\, as part of its Living World lecture series in celebration of Darwin Day. \nThe lecture\, which is free and open to the public\, will be held Friday\, February 10\, at 7:30 pm in the Earth and Space Sciences Building\, Lecture Theatre 001. Darwin Day celebrates the birthday of Charles Darwin and the implications of organic evolution in science and society. \nOne of the most striking patterns of evolution is its uneven tempo across the tree of life. Whereas some traits and lineages diversify rapidly\, others appear to remain inert over millions of years. But why is this so? Munoz will explore this question by focusing on one of evolution’s key architects: behavior. Using Caribbean Anolis lizards as a model system\, she will reveal the signatures of behavior at both micro- and macroevolutionary scales and illustrate the constraints on this phenomenon. Behavior can slow or hasten evolution; on occasion\, it does both simultaneously. \nMuñoz is an assistant professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale University and an assistant curator at the Yale Peabody Museum. Her research focuses on uncovering the mechanisms that guide the rate at which evolution unfolds — primarily working in the Caribbean\, her research centers on reptiles\, amphibians and fish. Prior to joining the faculty at Yale\, she was an assistant professor at Virginia Tech and did postdoctoral research fellowships at Duke University and the Australian National University.

SUMMARY:When Worms and Germs Compete\, Who Wins?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for cocktail hour\, dinner\, science quiz (with prizes!)\, and presentation by Professor Vanessa Ezenwa at the 15th Annual Southern Connecticut Darwin Day Dinner\nHumans and animals are rarely infected with a single disease-causing organism at any one time; simultaneous infections are the norm. Historically\, infectious diseases have been studied one at a time.\nSince most hosts are routinely infected by more than one type of parasite\, concurrent infection (or co-infection) has emerged as a key challenge for wild-life\, veterinary\, and human health. Interactions between parasites co-occurring within a single host have profound effects on infection outcomes ranging from disease severity and progression within individual hosts to patterns of disease spread across populations.\nDr. Ezenwa will discuss the study of concurrent infection and how this perspective is providing new insight into the spread and impact of infectious diseases. \nDr. Ezenwa received a B.A. in Biology from Rice University and a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University. She held faculty positions at the University of Montana and University of Georgia before moving to Yale in 2021 where she is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Her research focuses on the ecology and evolution of infectious diseases in wild animal populations\, with a specific focus on linking processes across scales—from cells to ecosystems. \nDate: Saturday\, February 11\, 2023\nTime: 6 pm Cocktail Hour\, 7 pm Full Course Dinner\nAt: The Inn at Longshore; 260 Campo Road; Westport\, CT 06880\nPrice: $69 per person ($75 after February 6).

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Talk: 'How Science Works: Darwin\, Wallace\, and Evolution' by Andrew Berry
DESCRIPTION:Greater Boston Humanists invites you to join us we celebrate Darwin Day together right on February 12 with a talk by Dr. Andrew Berry of Harvard. This live lecture event is co-sponsored by GBHumanists and the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard and MIT. Darwin Day is a major Humanist and secular community holiday “celebrating the principles of intellectual bravery\, perpetual curiosity\, scientific thinking\, and hunger for truth as embodied in Charles Darwin.” \nAndrew Berry’s lecture is fully titled: “Coincidence? Charles Darwin\, Alfred Russel Wallace\, and What Their Discovery of The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection Can Tell Us about How Science Works.” \nNatural selection is a simple idea\, and a long sought one\, but it wasn’t until 1858 that it was first unveiled. Curiously\, it was discovered not once\, but twice — by Charles Darwin and by Alfred Russel Wallace — suggesting that the milieu in which Darwin and Wallace were working made the idea particularly accessible. \nThis talk will first\, explore that milieu to identify its key components; 2nd\, examine the events that brought the trajectories of Wallace and Darwin together in 1858; and 3rd\, track their agreements and disagreements as the new science of evolution unfolded. The Darwin-Wallace story illustrates how science profits when critique and respect go together. \nDr. Andrew Berry is Assistant Head Tutor\, Integrative Biology\, and Lecturer on Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard. His research combined the techniques of field biology with those of molecular biology to seek evidence at the DNA level of Darwinian natural selection. He has given lectures on evolutionary topics to popular audiences all over the world – from Ankara to the Antarctic – occasionally drawing the ire of creationists. As an educator and popularizer\, Dr Berry seeks to demystify the most important and most misinterpreted of all biological ideas: evolution. \nJoin us for a lecture and snacks as we celebrate together in community of secular humanism!
