SUMMARY:R. Muehlenbernd - The Evolution of Coordination\, Cooperation\, and Communication - A Game-Theoretic Approach
DESCRIPTION:The lecture will take place in room: AB 3.11 \nLecture abstract: \nEvolutionary Game Theory (EGT) was originated as the application of games in evolutionary biology [5\, 9\, 10\, 16\, 17]. Subsequently\, EGT has been increasingly applied to the study of cultural evolution [1\, 17]\, ranging from elementary questions such as the evolution of coordinated [14] as well as cooperative [2\, 11\, 12] behavior among individuals to the study of the emergence of elaborated social normative mechanism\, such as the so-called social contract of human societies [3\, 13]. Additionally\, EGT has proven itself to be a convenient tool for the study of the emergence of an essential feature of human culture: language. Here\, particularly David Lewis’ [8] signaling game has found its application; in fundamental questions such the emergence of simple communication systems [6\, 15]\, as well as in the study of more specific phenomena in human language evolution [4\, 7]. DESCRIPTION:A new outdoor exhibition of 40 images by Magnum photographers will explore Charles Darwin’s legacy in modern society. Inspired by Darwin’s links to Shrewsbury\, the exhibition reflects on man’s progression through technology\, changes in society\, environmental concerns\, scientific discoveries\, and the historical events which have shaped the world we live in today. \nTraversing the globe from Australia to Brooklyn via Malaysia\, the exhibition includes a diverse selection of photographs from the seed vault in Svalbard by Jonas Bendiksen\, Longleat Safari Park by Martin Parr\, to the Horniman Museum and the protests in Tiananmen Square by Stuart Franklin. Other photographers included in the exhibition are Trent Parke\, Philip Jones Griffiths\, Elliott Erwitt\, Peter Marlow\, Alex Webb\, Rene Burri\, and Robert Capa – examining man’s place in the ever changing world. \nCharles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury in 1809 and published his landmark On the Origin of the Species in 1859. His theory of evolution by natural selection led to a rethinking of human’s place in the world – the idea that humans shared ancestry with apes was a challenge to the foundations of western civilisation. Evolution Explored will coincide with International Darwin Day\, and Darwin’s birthday on 12 February.  \nThe exhibition is a collaboration between Shrewsbury Business Improvement District (BID)\, The Hive Arts Centre\, GRAIN Photography Hub and partners.  In association with the exhibition\, there will be a series of activities including a Photo Safari and a Magnum Photos Talk. DESCRIPTION:Дети узнают об одном из известнейших и важнейших научных путешествий в истории – кругосветном плавании Чарлза Дарвина. С помощью детской странички сайта «Чарлз Дарвин и Эволюция» посетители зала электронных ресурсов узнают\, кто такой Чарльз Дарвин\, что такое эволюция и какое значение имеет эволюционная теория. Участники отправятся в воображаемую экспедицию из порта города Девонпорт. На корабле «Бигль»\, на котором Чарлз Дарвин совершил кругосветное путешествие\, дети виртуально пересекут экватор\, по пройдут четырём океанам Земли\, побывают в Бразилии\, Уругвае\, Чили и на Фолклендские островах и других местах\, откуда учёный привёз большое количество наблюдений. Ребятам расскажут\, какие факты удивили молодого исследователя\, какие открытия сделал естествоиспытатель во время экспедиции. DESCRIPTION:Bridgewater State University’s Department of Biological Sciences and Center for the Advancement of STEM Education (CASE) are excited to announce the preliminary schedule for our 2nd Annual Darwin Day celebration. \nOur event will take place on Friday\, February 10th\, 2017\, in the Dana Mohler-Faria Science and Mathematics Building’s Atrium\, Auditorium\, and 2nd floor hallway. Throughout the day\, we will have an information booth staffed by our students\, student research posters\, several natural history displays from our Natural History and Anthropology Collections\, as well as three film screenings from the PBS series “Your Inner Fish” (beginning at 8:00 am (Your Inner Fish)\, 10:00 am (Your Inner Reptile)\, and 3:00 pm (Your Inner Monkey) in the Auditorium) followed by moderated discussions with BSU faculty\, staff\, and students. Like last year\, Portable Charles Darwin will be available for photo ops! We have invited Dr. Erika Edwards of Brown University as our keynote speaker\, and she will be giving a public talk at 7:00 pm that evening on her exciting research on plant diversity and evolution.
