SUMMARY:Darwin Day Lecture 2018
DESCRIPTION:The first Darwin Day at Department of Zoology\, Gargi College\, University of Delhi was celebrated in 2017 by screening a BBC award winning documentary “Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life”. This year we have an invited speaker\, Prof. Mallikarjun Shakarad delivering a Darwin Day Lecture 2018 entitled “Evolution: a tale of two men!” along with student poster making competition to inculcate intellectual curiosity among young minds. The event will be hosted by Albatross\, the Zoological Society of Gargi College.

SUMMARY:Inaugural SSA@UMD Darwin Day Talk
DESCRIPTION:For our inaugural SSA@UMD Darwin Day talk\, we’re fortunate to have Prof. Eric Haag\, from the Department of Biology. Dr. Haag will present an overview of evolution by natural selection\, along with some case studies related to his expertise in the evolution of reproduction. \nDr. Haag earned a B.A. in biology and music at Oberlin College in 1990\, and a Ph.D from Indiana University in molecular\, cell\, and developmental biology in 1997. He began his current work on the evolution of sexual systems as a postdoc at the University of Wisconsin\, and joined UMD’s Department of Biology in 2002. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. He also teaches courses for both undergraduates and grad students. Dr. Haag lives with his family in College Park\, where he enjoys the non-commute and making music. \nPlease RSVP on the Facebook event page if you have an account there:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1980721908808933/

A parking garage is also available at the SW corner of Charles and Franklin. Directions are at \n https://goo.gl/maps/Z8SQuYWzGSx \nTitle: Can humans soon guide evolution in the wild using gene editing? \nDescription: Evolution results from competition in the wild between individuals of a species that differ in characteristics genetically encoded in their DNA. In recent years making small changes in animal and human DNA genomes has become easier due to the advent of CRISPR gene editing. Will it be possible in the near future to modify mosquito populations to reduce vector borne disease\, or even to make “enhanced” humans? \nSpeaker Bio: Allan Spradling is an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and former Director of the Department of Embryology\, Carnegie Institution for Science\, located here in Baltimore. In 1982\, Spradling and his colleague Gerry Rubin became the first scientists to correct a genetic defect (eye color) in a multicellular organism (the fruit fly Drosophila) using a new method of gene transfer based on transposable elements. He and his colleagues in the genetics community subsequently generated and studied tens of thousands of “transgenic” organisms\, revealing the much about what can and can’t be accomplished by gene editing. \nLinks: \nDr. Allan Spradling’s page: \n https://emb.carnegiescience.edu/science/faculty/allan-spradling \nBaltimore Coalition of Reason \n http://BaltimoreCoR.org/

SUMMARY:Darwin's Week
DESCRIPTION:Darwin’s Week at NSU is a popular science marathon about the origin of everything in the world for schoolchildren as well as the general public. Every day one can visit a lecture and have an opportunity to ask the speaker questions. Lectures at the first Darwin Week were devoted to the origin of the Universe\, the Earth\, life\, man\, language\, family and species.\nThe speakers at the Week are faculty members and scientists from NSU. They are specialists who can share with listeners the latest and most reliable information. Darwin Week lectures are about something that is not yet in the books and will only get there in a few years.\nDarwin Week at NSU is timed to overlap with the Day of Darwin\, which is celebrated all over the world on February 12.

SUMMARY:The Books on the Beagle
DESCRIPTION:Part of the University of Delaware’s annual celebration of International Darwin Day\, this lecture is led by Leslie K. Overstreet\, curator of natural history rare books\, Smithsonian Libraries. It examines the remarkable library Charles Darwin and Captain Fitzroy took with them on the famous round-the-world voyage of HMS Beagle in 1831-1836. \nOverstreet earned a B.A. in English Literature in 1971 and a Master of Arts in Teaching\, both from Reed College\, and held jobs as a teacher and a writer/editor before joining the Smithsonian Libraries in 1980. \nInitially staffing the anthropology and vertebrate zoology libraries in the National Museum of Natural History\, she earned an M.L.S. degree in rare-books librarianship at the University of Maryland and has worked in the Smithsonian Libraries’ Special Collections Department since 1988. She has headed the Joseph F. Cullman 3rd Library of Natural History since it opened in 2002. \nHer own research has focused for many years on Mark Catesby’s “Natural history of Carolina\, Florida and the Bahama Islands (1731-1743).” She served as a consultant to the documentary film “The curious Mr. Catesby\,” produced by the Catesby Commemorative Trust and broadcast on PBS in 2009\, and presented the results of her research on the printing history of Catesby’s book at the 2012 Catesby Tercentennial Conference\, which was subsequently published as a chapter in “The curious Mister Catesby” (2015).

SUMMARY:The Human Impact on Plant Evolution: Traditional Breeding & Genetic Engineering
DESCRIPTION:In our ag-driven state of Nebraska\, plants and their characteristics\, such as drought tolerance\, are critical to our economy and our daily lives\, from the mega-farm scale right down to our backyard gardens. Join us in celebration of Darwin’s work in evolution and learn how we have shaped plants historically and how we are doing it today. Just what does ‘GMO’ mean anyway? \nOur Darwin Day Speaker will be Leah Sandall\, Assistant Professor of Practice Department of Agronomy & Horticulture.

SUMMARY:Theory of evolution case: A philosophical interpretation of a current controversy | Slučaj teorije evolucije: filozofsko tumačenje jednog aktuelnog spora
DESCRIPTION:The main topic of Dr. Eva Kamerer lececture will be the problem of the records\, the set of questions that relate scientific theory and data that support it. Starting from this problem\, Dr. Eva Kamerer will try to show the possible implications of such position in understanding scientific rationality.
