DESCRIPTION:Join us for a delicious all-you-can-eat bagel brunch\, with a talk by guest speaker Dr. Jeffrey Silverman on “Exploding Stars\, Dark Energy\, and the Runaway Universe.” Some of the most energetic and fascinating objects in the Universe are exploding stars known as supernova. Observations of distant supernova provided the first evidence that the expansion of the Universe is speeding up with time\, rather than slowing down. This wholly unexpected phenomenon is likely due to a repulsive “dark energy” and has become one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in modern science. Before moving into the tech industry\, Jeffrey earned his PhD at UC Berkeley working on exploding stars and dark energy with Prof. Alex Fillipenko\, and was an NSF Astronomy & Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellow at UT Austin. SUMMARY:CRISPR: A New Genetic Engineering Technology: Promises and Perils
DESCRIPTION:Unlike CRISPR\, previous genetic engineering technologies were expensive and time-consuming. The ability to precisely edit the genome of nearly any organism has revolutionized biology\, medicine\, and agriculture. From curing deadly genetic disorders to engineering drought-resistant plants\, CRISPR genome editing technology will reshape modern medicine and equip us with tools to cope with a changing planet. Dr. Kevin Doxzen will unravel this groundbreaking technology and outline pressing questions that society is now forced to confront. We can now engineer humans\, but should we? \nDr. Kevin Doxzen is the Science Communications Specialist at the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI). The IGI is an academic research partnership between UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco that aims to develop and deploy DNA engineering technologies to solve real-world problems. Kevin received his PhD from UC Berkeley in the lab of Jennifer Doudna\, who is credited with co-developing CRISPR technology. Dr. Doudna has called for a public conversation over the use of gene editing in humans and the impact this technology may have on future generations. \nThis lecture is in celebration of Darwin Day. Few scientific discoveries have impacted how we understand our surroundings and ourselves more than Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. In honor of this contribution\, we will celebrate Darwin’s birthday with a luncheon\, starting at 12:15\, and this scientific lecture about a topic that is not only important for science but for human welfare as well. There will be a charge for the luncheon but the lecture\, starting at 1:00\, is free. \nThis event is sponsored by the Humanists and Non-Theists of the Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco.

DESCRIPTION:February is the month dedicated to Darwin to celebrate his birth\, but it is also the month of the birth of Pietro Doderlein\, the first Professor engaged for the first course of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy of the University of Palermo\, and founder of the Museum of Zoology.\nDarwin Day\, the international event dedicated to the English naturalist who has revolutionized the thinking of the biological sciences\, assumes\, as a consequence\, a double value within the collections of the Museum. Inspired by Darwin’s principles\, the purpose of the exhibition is not only to draw the explorations and travels of Darwin on the Beagle\, but also to review it from a different point of view from what we are used to; in fact\, the thousands of different specimens collected by Pietro Doderlein\, more than 150 years ago\, will be the unusual guides in the Museum of Zoology of the University Museum System of the University of Palermo.
