SUMMARY:Darwin Day: 12° Darwin Day in Correggio: Animals\, as we are.
DESCRIPTION:Emotions and intelligence in the animal kingdom\nWe\, Homo sapiens\, belong to the animal kingdom\, but we always had the presumption to hold us in higher absolute. Scientific knowledge and better observation has instead revealed many qualities in common with the animals: intelligence to emotions. The spread of the pet and its positive relational experience is receiving confirmations from what emerges from ethological studies. They are similar to us as much as we are like them.\nMeeting with prof. Roberto Marchesini\nRoberto Marchesini\, philosopher\, ethologist and zoo-antropologist teaches in several universities. In 1997 he founded SIUA (School of Human-Animal)\, of which he is still the director\, through which it promotes throughout Italy higher education courses on relationship with pets\, the pet therapy and in the field of child-animal relationship. It’s the author of over a hundred publications including: Italian-Dog Dictionary (Probe\, 2010)\, Against animal rights? (2014)\, Fundamentals of zoo-antropology (2014)\, Animal Epiphany. The overman as revelation (2014) and Ethology philosophical. In search of animal subjectivity (2016).

SUMMARY:Central Colorado Celebrates Darwin Day!
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Central Colorado Humanists as we view and then discuss the BBC documentary “Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life”\, hosted by David Attenborough.  Cake and ice cream will follow.  The public is welcome to this free community event.  Donations to the CCH scholarship fund will be gratefully accepted. \nSummary:  David Attenborough outlines the development of Darwin’s theory through his observations of animals and plants both in nature and in the domesticated state\, visiting sites important in Darwin’s own life (e.g. Down House\, Cambridge University\, and the Natural History Museum) and using archive footage from Attenborough’s many nature documentaries for the BBC.  He reviews the development of the theory since its beginnings\, and  highlights its revolutionary impact on the way in which humans view themselves:  not as having dominion over the animals\, but as part of the natural world and subject to the same controlling forces that govern all life on Earth.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Lecture by Dr. Amy Parish
DESCRIPTION:Sex\, Bonding & Dominance in Bonobos: Reflections on Our Closest Living Relatives and Ourselves\nA Darwin Day lecture by Dr. Amy Parish \nJoin us for Darwin Birthday cake after the lecture! \n What really separates “man” from “animal”\, if indeed there is such a separation? About 200 species\, including humans\, belong to the Primate mammalian order. Like all animals\, they are faced with the problems of how to survive\, breed and rear offspring. The mating behavior of the apes is particularly complex and fascinating. Chimpanzee societies are typically characterized as physically aggressive\, male-bonded and male-dominated\, while their close relatives\, the bonobos\, differ in that female bonobos bond with one another\, form coalitions\, and dominate males. \n How do these findings change our views of our evolution and ourselves? Dr. Amy Parish\, a biological anthropologist\, primatologist and Darwinian feminist and an expert on the social behavior of the bonobo\, will explore and compare the sexual and social behavior of chimpanzees and bonobos. Some researchers are reluctant to consider\, let alone acknowledge\, female dominance in bonobos. Both species are equally “man’s” closest relative. The implications of understanding our origins and shared behaviors will be explored from a feminist viewpoint. \n Dr. Parish is an interdisciplinary scholar who teaches at USC. She has studied the world’s captive population of bonobos for the last 25 years and was the first to characterize bonobo society as a matriarchy. In all of her research\, she uses an evolutionary\, bio-cultural\, feminist\, and interdisciplinary approach to shed light on the origins of human behavior. Her work has been featured in Ms. Magazine\, and she has appeared on Nova\, National Geographic Explorer\, NPR\, and Discovery Health Channel productions. She has given numerous public lectures worldwide; moderated an event at the L.A. Public Library honoring the 50th anniversary of The Feminine Mystique; lectured in the “First Fridays” series at L.A.’s Natural History Museum; and is a frequent interlocutor in the L.A. Public Library’s ALOUD series. In 2011\, Dr. Parish completed a workshop led by actor Alan Alda on how to effectively communicate science to the public. She also is a fellow of the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities. \nAdmission\nPublic: $8\nStudents: $4\nPlanet Level Members: FREE

SUMMARY:How to Hunt for Aliens: Finding Darwin beyond Planet Earth
DESCRIPTION:Darwin utterly changed our understanding of the source of the diversity of life on Earth\, and with it\, our origin. But is our origin story one of a multitude—or are we unique or\, indeed\, alone in the cosmos? With Darwin as our guide\, we are now in a position to go forth and search. Join evolutionary biologist and astrobiologist Lynn Rothschild for a special talk hosted by the Yale Humanist Community in honor of Darwin Day. Free and open to the public. \nLynn Rothschild is passionate about the evolution of life on Earth or elsewhere\, while at the same time pioneering the use of synthetic biology to enable space exploration. Just as travel abroad permits new insights into home\, so too the search for life elsewhere allows a more mature scientific\, philosophical and ethical perception of life on Earth. She wears these hats as a senior scientist NASA’s Ames Research Center as well as Adjunct Professor at Brown University\, and the University of California Santa Cruz. Her research has focused on how life\, particularly microbes\, has evolved in the context of the physical environment\, both here and potentially elsewhere. She is a fellow of the Linnean Society of London\, The California Academy of Sciences and the Explorer’s Club. In 2015 she was awarded the Isaac Asimov Award from the American Humanist Association\, and was the recipient of the Horace Mann Award from Brown University.
