DESCRIPTION:February is the month dedicated to Darwin to celebrate his birth\, but it is also the month of the birth of Pietro Doderlein\, the first Professor engaged for the first course of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy of the University of Palermo\, and founder of the Museum of Zoology.\nDarwin Day\, the international event dedicated to the English naturalist who has revolutionized the thinking of the biological sciences\, assumes\, as a consequence\, a double value within the collections of the Museum. Inspired by Darwin’s principles\, the purpose of the exhibition is not only to draw the explorations and travels of Darwin on the Beagle\, but also to review it from a different point of view from what we are used to; in fact\, the thousands of different specimens collected by Pietro Doderlein\, more than 150 years ago\, will be the unusual guides in the Museum of Zoology of the University Museum System of the University of Palermo.

DESCRIPTION:For our inaugural SSA@UMD Darwin Day talk\, we’re fortunate to have Prof. Eric Haag\, from the Department of Biology.  Dr. Haag will present an overview of evolution by natural selection\, along with some case studies related to his expertise in the evolution of reproduction. \nDr. Haag earned a B.A. in biology and music at Oberlin College in 1990\, and a Ph.D from Indiana University in molecular\, cell\, and developmental biology in 1997. He began his current work on the evolution of sexual systems as a postdoc at the University of Wisconsin\, and joined UMD’s Department of Biology in 2002. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. He also teaches courses for both undergraduates and grad students. In recent years making small changes in animal and human DNA genomes has become easier due to the advent of CRISPR gene editing.  Will it be possible in the near future to modify mosquito populations to reduce vector borne disease\, or even to make “enhanced” humans?   \nSpeaker Bio:  Allan Spradling is an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and former Director of the Department of Embryology\, Carnegie Institution for Science\, located here in Baltimore.  In 1982\, Spradling and his colleague Gerry Rubin became the first scientists to correct a genetic defect (eye color) in a multicellular organism (the fruit fly Drosophila) using a new method of gene transfer based on transposable elements. Lectures at the first Darwin Week were devoted to the origin of the Universe\, the Earth\, life\, man\, language\, family and species.\nThe speakers at the Week are faculty members and scientists from NSU. They are specialists who can share with listeners the latest and most reliable information. Darwin Week lectures are about something that is not yet in the books and will only get there in a few years.\nDarwin Week at NSU is timed to overlap with the Day of Darwin\, which is celebrated all over the world on February 12.
