SUMMARY:Darwin Day Lecture and Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Fifth Annual Darwin Day Celebration \nFeb 21\nWe will honor Darwin with our annual luncheon and lecture. Dr. Frank Sulloway will speak on Darwin and how his thinking was influenced by his trip to the Galapagos Island. \n“Darwin and the Galapagos: What Darwin Might Like to Have Known.” \nDarwin’s five-week visit to the Galápagos Islands\, during the fifth and final year of the Beagle voyage (1831-1836)\, provided a springboard for the Darwinian Revolution. If Darwin were alive today and could issue a new edition of the Origin of Species (1859)\, what kind of evidence from the Galápagos might he consider the most important to include? \nFrank J. Sulloway is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology\, and is also a member of the Institute of Personality and Social Research\, at the University of California\, Berkeley. He has a Ph.D. in the history of science from Harvard University and received the Pfizer Award of the History of Science Society. Dr. Sulloway has written about the nature of scientific creativity and has published extensively on the life and theories of Charles Darwin. \nThe menu will be prepared under the direction of Linda-Marie Koza:\nThai-style Curried Lentil Soup\,\nCoconut Rice\nWinter Greens with Lime & Lemongrass\nChocolate Cake with Coconut Ganache\n(all vegan) \nThe luncheon starts at 12:30 and the lecture around 1:00. The lecture without lunch is free.\nLunch $7.00 (Wine available for $3.00)\nSponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Humanists. Everyone is welcome.\nWe’ll be in the Thomas Starr King room.

SUMMARY:Celebration of Darwin Day in the Galapagos Islands
DESCRIPTION:Metropolitan Touring Ecuador celebrates Darwin Day in the Galapagos Islands on board her fleet of expedition vessels MV Santa Cruz II\, Yacht La Pinta\, and Yacht Isabela II. Throughout the weekend a series of lectures and land visits to areas Charles Darwin explored in the Galapagos will be arranged by our team of Expedition Leaders. Guests from all over the world will get a chance to have a deeper understanding in how Galapagos influenced Charles Darwin’s thinking\, but also to reflect in why Charles Darwin is one of the most positive drivers of modern thinking in humanity. Bravery redefined!

SUMMARY:R. Muehlenbernd - The Evolution of Coordination\, Cooperation\, and Communication - A Game-Theoretic Approach
DESCRIPTION:The lecture will take place in room: AB 3.11 \nLecture abstract: \nEvolutionary Game Theory (EGT) was originated as the application of games in evolutionary biology [5\, 9\, 10\, 16\, 17]. Subsequently\, EGT has been increasingly applied to the study of cultural evolution [1\, 17]\, ranging from elementary questions such as the evolution of coordinated [14] as well as cooperative [2\, 11\, 12] behavior among individuals to the study of the emergence of elaborated social normative mechanism\, such as the so-called social contract of human societies [3\, 13]. Additionally\, EGT has proven itself to be a convenient tool for the study of the emergence of an essential feature of human culture: language. Here\, particularly David Lewis’ [8] signaling game has found its application; in fundamental questions such the emergence of simple communication systems [6\, 15]\, as well as in the study of more specific phenomena in human language evolution [4\, 7]. This talk will introduce to the basic concepts of EGT\, thereby addressing the following emergent features in human cultural evolution: i) coordination\, ii) cooperation and the social contract\, iii) communication/signaling systems\, and iv) human language.\n\nReferences: \n[1] Alexander\, J.M.: Evolutionary Game Theory.
