SUMMARY:Meet Charles Darwin
DESCRIPTION:Commemorate Darwin’s birthday by spending an evening with the affable Charles Darwin. Enactor Brian “Fox” Ellis is back by popular demand to bring Darwin to life. Hear humorous tales of Darwin’s training as a naturalist\, his insights into South American geology\, his discovery of strange creatures on the Galápagos archipelago\, and most important\, the scientific evidence that led to his revolutionary theory. Equal parts dramatic storytelling\, stand-up comedy\, and show-and-tell\, Ellis immerses you in the intellectual world of one of history’s greatest scientific minds. There are two performances\, at 6 and 8 pm\, and a special tour through the Galapagos Tuesday morning at 7.

SUMMARY:Darwin e Aristóteles: Discutindo a relação
DESCRIPTION:Professor Nélio Bizzo\, from Faculdade de educação\, will talk about the views of Darwin and Aristotle on the biodiversity.

SUMMARY:Darwin's Ecological Experiment
DESCRIPTION:When Dr. David Wilkinson visited Ascension Island in the South Atlantic\, he was amazed by its ecosystem. “I remember thinking\, this is really weird\,” he said. “There were all kinds of plants that don’t belong together in nature\, growing side by side.” Charles Darwin had visited Ascension on the return leg of the Beagle’s voyage in 1836. In his diary\, he recorded it as an arid\, volcanic island. The lush cloud forest Wilkinson found on Ascension Island in 2003 was the result of a collaboration between Darwin and his closest friend\, Joseph Dalton Hooker.

SUMMARY:NJ Humanist Network Program - Denying to the Grave: Why We Ignore the Facts that Will Save Us
DESCRIPTION:Sara E. Gorman\, PhD\, MPH\, and Jack Gorman\, MD\, authors of Denying To the Grave: Why We Ignore the Facts That Will Save Us\, published in 2016. \nThe authors “argue that the basis for science denial rests in the normal psychology and biology of the human mind. In addition\, our reactions to scientific finding can be hijacked by demagogues and self-interest groups that manipulate the already imperfect way in which we see facts and evaluate risk. We will review several of the key factors behind science denial and show how both liberal and conservative political ideologies are prone to incorporate incorrect scientific ideas. As examples of these phenomena\, we will discuss climate change\, GMOs\, vaccinations\, and personal gun ownership. In addition to discussing the factors that contribute to science denial\, we will share a number of practical ways to combat it in a wide variety of settings and introduce our new organization\, Critica\, a community devoted to critical thinking and the rational application of scientific evidence to healthcare decision-making.” \nThe program will start at 1:30pm in the Community Room (on the right just inside the front entrance). A Q&A session will follow the talk\, and the book will be available for sale and signing. Free and open to the public. Refreshments provided. \nDenying to the Grave: Why We Ignore the Facts That Will Save Us

SUMMARY:Bagel Brunch: Rosalind Franklin\, Pioneering Scientist
DESCRIPTION:In honor of our annual Darwin Day celebration\, Jewish Humanist community Kol Hadash will screen a PBS film about the controversial chemist and pioneer molecular biologist Rosalind Franklin\, whose research many consider to have been fundamental to the understanding of DNA and deserving of the Nobel Prize awarded to others. Commentary and responses to your questions will be provided by Emeritus Professor of Biology Lynne Elkin who is writing a book on Franklin. Please bring your appetite for a delicious lox and bagel brunch. Public donation: $10/ea to cover cost of food. Albany Community Center\, Rms I & II.

DESCRIPTION:A worship service and sermon celebrating how Darwin’s theory has radically changed our understanding of religion\, human nature\, and our relationship with the natural world. We will also discuss the growing imperative to advocate for free scientific inquiry in our current anti-science political climate.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day 2017: In the footsteps of Wallace
DESCRIPTION:Alfred Russel Wallace\, the British naturalist who independently conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection\, visited Singapore many times from 1854 – 1862 as part of his eight-year stay in the Malay archipelago. To get closer to the remaining primary forests\, Wallace stayed with a French Roman Catholic missionary at St Joseph’s in Bukit Timah district. During his time in Singapore\, Wallace trekked daily into the hilltops and collected thousands of insects and birds. \nThe Wallace trail at Bukit Timah is named in honour of the naturalist’s time in Singapore. On Feb 18\, the Humanist Society is organising at outing to the trail. You will be able to see the wildlife such as the Plantain squirrel\, Common Mormon butterfly and various species of birds. Dr John van Wyhe\, the historian of science who has studied Charles Darwin and Wallace extensively\, will be joining us as a guest. Dr John is the director of The Complete Work of Charles Darwin Online and Wallace Online. He is currently based in NUS. After the Wallace trail\, you can opt to hike up the Bukit Timah hill and experience the primary rainforest environment which Wallace walked in. The hill has just been reopened after two years of restoration.
