SUMMARY:Darwin Day Movie & Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Please come and enjoy and movie and feel free to share a dish for a potluck dinner Darwin Day celebration. Please bring your own preferred beverage. \nWe will be screening the NOVA documentary Judgement Day: Intelligent Design On Trial. \nThis is a rollercoaster of a film that highlights both how strong the evidence for evolution is and how some with a theological impetus are constantly trying to undermine its validity and instruction. \nMovie Description: In a tiny town of Dover in eastern Pennsylvania\, in 2004\, the local school board ordered science teachers to read to their high school biology students a statement that suggested there is an alternative to Darwin’s theory of evolution called “Intelligent Design.” NOVA captures the emotional conflict in the historic six-week trial\, Kitzmiller v. Dover School District\, which was closely watched by the world’s media. \nThe film will begin around 6:30pm to ensure those that are eating have enough time to do so in order to minimize disruptions during the film. Please note\, the potluck is optional.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Pot-Luck and Speaker. The Evolution of Religion.
DESCRIPTION:The Norman naturalism Group celebrates Darwin Day 2017 with a pot-luck dinner and speaker. The topic is “The Evolution of Religion”. \nPull out your best recipe and get ready for some more good eating and good talking. 😉 \nPlease bring a potluck dinner item\, finger foods\, drinks\, etc\, but hey\, please come without if you don’t have time. (Please post what you’re bringing in the comments below.) We probably won’t eat till 5:30 or 6:00\, so don’t worry about being exactly on time. After dinner\, those that wish can settle down and hear the speaker and have some discussion. Last time was GREAT and I’m really looking forward to this event! \nThis month’s speakers will be our very own Tomoko Yoshida and Stephen Weldon (OU History of Science program). They will lead a discussion on the idea of the evolution of religion. \nSpeaker: Tomoko Yoshida and Stephen Weldon\nTopic: The Evolution of Religion! \nWhat does it mean to talk about evolving religion? Is it just change\, is there a direction to it? Is modern secular society the most recent stage in religious evolution? \nBring your ideas and opinions and be prepared to discuss! 🙂 \nHere are some other perspectives on the evolution of religion:\nhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolutionary_origin_of_religions\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOsOb0QRaQs \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Evolution: Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask
DESCRIPTION:Public lecture on evolution followed by Darwin birthday party. Lecture by Len Eisenberg\, geologist\, founder of Evogeneao.com\, and builder of earth history parks and geologic climbing walls. Talk will describe how life on Earth is one big extended family\, with all life forms related by common descent\, and natural selection as the primary driver of evolutionary change. The overwhelming evidence for evolution is presented with humorous cartoons as rebuttals to common arguments against evolution. Birthday party after the talk features refreshments and birthday cake. Attendees wearing full or partial animal or plant costume get a free Evogeneao evolution tee shirt\, and best costumes get an Evogeneao evolution hoodie.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day in Astrakhan /

SUMMARY:Hour of knowledge and discoveries «Look from the past»/

SUMMARY:Humanist Cafe Moot
DESCRIPTION:What is Darwin Day and why are we taking note? It’s not a celebration of the city of Darwin in the Northern Territory but a celebration of Charles Darwin the scientist and the work he did to begin to reveal our true origins. No longer did we as Humans have to rely upon myths and fairytales to explain how we came to be. Today we have as thorough an understanding about the evolution of species as we do about how the solar system’s orbits operate. \nJoin us at the monthly cafe moot and share your story of when you first encountered Darwin’s brave new hypothesis and whether or not it changed your world the way it changed the scientific community. \nThe Cafe Moots are a social event and are a chance to talk about current events\, the latest happenings in Humanism or to just shoot the breeze with like minded people in an unstructured setting. \nCheck out our other Moots and meetings to see if there is an event close to you!

SUMMARY:Darwin Day with Aron Ra
DESCRIPTION:Central Florida Freethought Community educational meetings are free and open to the public. This month there is a $10 suggested donation. \nEnjoy thought-provoking speakers\, local freethought news\, state/church activism\, volunteer opportunities\, and socializing. Come out to meet old friends and make new ones. Coffee and water will be available with snacks served during the social hour after the meeting so plan to stay a while. \n————— \nThis month we celebrate DARWIN DAY! \nFebruary’s CFFC SPECIAL EVENT features Aron Ra\, evolution debater\, science educator\, and host of the Ra-Men Podcast. Also Dr. Daniel Batcheldor\, astrophysicist and author of “Astronomy Saves the World”; Brandon Haught\, biology teacher\, Founding Board Member of Florida Citizens for Science and author of “Going Ape;” and Valerie First\, evolution educator and “Street Teacher.” \nAron Ra is the president of the Atheist Alliance of America\, the host of the Ra-Men Podcast\, a public speaker\, video producer\, blogger\, and YouTuber. He is also the former Texas State Director for American Atheists. Aron was baptized as a Mormon. He says\, as a child he never saw himself as a member of that faith\, however\, because he didn’t know enough about religions to make a responsible choice about what to believe. Aron is a vocal critic of creationism\, and promotes the teaching of evolution and proper science in Texas schools. Aron has recently published a book entitled Foundational Falsehoods of Creationism. \nAron Ra spoke was featured in the 2014 documentary film My Week in Atheism. Together with Matt Dillahunty and Seth Andrews\, they completed the Unholy Trinity Tour in 2014 which they took to Australia in 2015. Aron Ra traveled in Europe and spoke at several events including QED: Question\, Explore\, Discover in England\, at De Vrije Gedachte in Utrecht\, the Netherlands\,and at Skepsis Norge in Oslo\, Norway. \n——————————————– \nDr. Daniel Batcheldor is the Department Head of Physics and Space Sciences at Florida Institute of Technology. Dr Batcheldor just published his first book entitled Astronomy Saves the World: Securing our Future Through Exploration and Education. \nHis research started with super-massive black holes. Those exotic objects\, whose masses can reach billions of times that of the Sun\, have been observed at\, or near\, the centers of galaxies. He uses photometric\, spectroscopic\, and polarimetric techniques to examine the role super-massive black holes may have played in the evolution of galaxies. How galaxies form and evolve is one of the greatest mysteries still remaining in contemporary astrophysics; do they coalesce from giant clouds of gas\, or via huge cosmic collisions? \nDaniel holds a BSc (Hons) Astronomy University of Hertfordshire and a Ph.D. Astrophysics University of Hertfordshire. He has been conducting research into the next generation of imaging devices which are theoretically capable of imaging Earth-like planets around other stars. \n——————————————– \nBrandon Haught is a high school biology teacher\, Founding Board Member of Florida Citizens for Science and author of Going Ape which reviews Florida’s storied history in the teaching of evolution. \nBrandon served in the US Marine Corps and trained to become a combat correspondent. He also served aboard the USS Bataan with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit while on deployment in the Mediterranean area. After leaving the Corps he found work as a graphic designer and as a weekly columnist for a small newspaper in western North Carolina. 52 columns later he moved to Florida where he was a sheriff’s office spokesman for a decade. While there he also took college courses to earn a degree in science education. Brandon then obtained certification to teach high school biology and middle school math in Florida and now works as a biology teacher in Volusia County\, Florida. \n——————————————– \nValerie First is an evolution educator. She refers to herself as a “Street Teacher\,” a teacher whose job involves talking with people of every age and every level of education at informal settings. Officially\, Valerie has been a docent; but instead of walking around with an animal or other portable exhibit she introduces people to her collection of animal skulls from both living and extinct species native to Florida. \nAs a member of the Florida Fossil Hunters\, Valerie brings to life fossils for the young and old. The Orlando-based group is dedicated to “bringing about a greater understanding of prehistoric Florida and thus a greater appreciation of Florida’s unique environment.” \nValerie does her part giving talks as a volunteer at the Orlando Science Center and the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens\, educating the public about what can be found just beneath the surface of Florida. She especially enjoys showing off fossils of animals like mammoths\, mastodons\, saber cats\, giant beavers\, and giant ground sloths that shared the area with Florida’s earliest inhabitants. \nValerie’s desire to share her knowledge began when her daughter asked Valerie to talk to her sixth-grade class about fossils. That was 22 years ago\, and Valerie has been giving volunteer presentations ever since. \n“Valerie has been with us almost 10 years\,” says Zack Lynn\, the Science Center’s volunteer manager. “Her knowledge about fossils is contagious\, and she keeps it up-to-date. She has her own prehistoric fossil collection\, and without that\, our visitors would miss out.” \nValerie has amassed a collection of replica prehistoric skulls of “long-ago humans\,” as she calls them\, and has two dinosaur bones on her exhibit table in addition to a variety of other ancient artifacts which she will be sharing at this event! \n————— \nSince it was founded in 2012\, the Central Florida Freethought Community has worked hard to keep religion out of government in Central Florida. As a chapter of the Freedom From Religion Foundation and an affiliate of the American Humanist Association\, we have accomplished a great deal and grown substantially. \nAs of 2015\, the CFFC has formed our Board of Directors\, drafted Articles of Incorporation\, registered as a non-profit in Florida\, received a sales tax exemption\, and obtained our 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. We have also decided to expand our focus beyond state/church separation to include: \n• Outreach to the greater Central Florida community \n• Regular educational events for supporters \n• Opportunities for volunteerism with non-profit charities which welcome the participation of non-believers \nThis expanded mission will serve to unite an already well-established community of freethinkers and organizations across Central Florida in a regular educational event where more work can be done to serve the needs of the freethought community. \nWe hope you’ll join us\, see what you think\, share your ideas\, and help us build a community we can be proud of. \n— \nCFFC has no membership dues\, but we do have recurring operating expenses that keep the organization running. The largest expense are these monthly meetings (venue\, equipment\, speaker fees\, printing\, etc.). \nIf you share our values\, care about the work we do\, and find yourself able to contribute\, Click Here to Donate (https://www.paypal.com/donate/?token=miKJuHediLzeY3f-70NX-RrVL1xzMS9Kp-52sQJBIS7TkKzaQnp6VnXouWu3N1ZkMjSFQm) . SUMMARY:Recent Human Evolution
DESCRIPTION:Modern Humans that look pretty much like us and with a brain size similar to ours appeared about 100\,000 to 200\,000 years ago. However\, human evolution has not stopped. Evolutionary adaptations have permitted humans to occupy and thrive in almost all regions of the Earth. Dr. Nielsen will discuss how human genetic diversity makes this possible. While Homo sapiens is the only hominid species that survives today\, traces of our extinct cousins can be found in the genes of some modern humans. As a consequence of interbreeding with humans\, these hominids bequeathed genes to some modern humans that enables them to live at high altitudes. Natural selection of genetic mutations explains how some humans have adapted to survival in extremely cold environments. Understanding these genetic changes helps us understand how diets beneficial to some humans\, may not be healthy for everyone.\nRasmus Nielsen received his Ph.D. from UC-Berkeley in 1998\, did postdoctoral research at Harvard University and worked as an assistant professor at Cornell University from 2000-2004. From 2004 he has been a Professor of Biology at the University of Copenhagen and he joins the faculty at the departments of Integrative Biology and Statistics at Berkeley as an Associate Professor in Jan. 2008.\nRasmus Nielsen’s research focuses on statistical and computational aspects of evolutionary theory and genetics. One of the central problems he has been interested in is the molecular basis of evolutionary adaptation. What happens at the molecular levels as one species is transformed into another over evolutionary time?\nThere will be a luncheon starting at 12:30 for a nominal fee.  Everyone is welcome.

SUMMARY:How to Hunt for Aliens: Finding Darwin beyond Planet Earth
DESCRIPTION:Darwin utterly changed our understanding of the source of the diversity of life on Earth\, and with it\, our origin. But is our origin story one of a multitude—or are we unique or\, indeed\, alone in the cosmos? With Darwin as our guide\, we are now in a position to go forth and search. Join evolutionary biologist and astrobiologist Lynn Rothschild for a special talk hosted by the Yale Humanist Community in honor of Darwin Day. Free and open to the public. \nLynn Rothschild is passionate about the evolution of life on Earth or elsewhere\, while at the same time pioneering the use of synthetic biology to enable space exploration. Just as travel abroad permits new insights into home\, so too the search for life elsewhere allows a more mature scientific\, philosophical and ethical perception of life on Earth. She wears these hats as a senior scientist NASA’s Ames Research Center as well as Adjunct Professor at Brown University\, and the University of California Santa Cruz. Her research has focused on how life\, particularly microbes\, has evolved in the context of the physical environment\, both here and potentially elsewhere. She is a fellow of the Linnean Society of London\, The California Academy of Sciences and the Explorer’s Club. In 2015 she was awarded the Isaac Asimov Award from the American Humanist Association\, and was the recipient of the Horace Mann Award from Brown University.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Lecture by Dr. Amy Parish
DESCRIPTION:Sex\, Bonding & Dominance in Bonobos: Reflections on Our Closest Living Relatives and Ourselves\nA Darwin Day lecture by Dr. Amy Parish \nJoin us for Darwin Birthday cake after the lecture! \n What really separates “man” from “animal”\, if indeed there is such a separation? About 200 species\, including humans\, belong to the Primate mammalian order. Like all animals\, they are faced with the problems of how to survive\, breed and rear offspring. The mating behavior of the apes is particularly complex and fascinating. Chimpanzee societies are typically characterized as physically aggressive\, male-bonded and male-dominated\, while their close relatives\, the bonobos\, differ in that female bonobos bond with one another\, form coalitions\, and dominate males. \n How do these findings change our views of our evolution and ourselves? Dr. Amy Parish\, a biological anthropologist\, primatologist and Darwinian feminist and an expert on the social behavior of the bonobo\, will explore and compare the sexual and social behavior of chimpanzees and bonobos. Some researchers are reluctant to consider\, let alone acknowledge\, female dominance in bonobos. Both species are equally “man’s” closest relative. The implications of understanding our origins and shared behaviors will be explored from a feminist viewpoint. \n Dr. Parish is an interdisciplinary scholar who teaches at USC. She has studied the world’s captive population of bonobos for the last 25 years and was the first to characterize bonobo society as a matriarchy. In all of her research\, she uses an evolutionary\, bio-cultural\, feminist\, and interdisciplinary approach to shed light on the origins of human behavior. Her work has been featured in Ms. Magazine\, and she has appeared on Nova\, National Geographic Explorer\, NPR\, and Discovery Health Channel productions. She has given numerous public lectures worldwide; moderated an event at the L.A. Public Library honoring the 50th anniversary of The Feminine Mystique; lectured in the “First Fridays” series at L.A.’s Natural History Museum; and is a frequent interlocutor in the L.A. Public Library’s ALOUD series. In 2011\, Dr. Parish completed a workshop led by actor Alan Alda on how to effectively communicate science to the public. She also is a fellow of the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities. \nAdmission\nPublic: $8\nStudents: $4\nPlanet Level Members: FREE
