SUMMARY:Darwin Day: 12° Darwin Day in Correggio: Animals\, as we are.
DESCRIPTION:Emotions and intelligence in the animal kingdom\nWe\, Homo sapiens\, belong to the animal kingdom\, but we always had the presumption to hold us in higher absolute. Scientific knowledge and better observation has instead revealed many qualities in common with the animals: intelligence to emotions. The spread of the pet and its positive relational experience is receiving confirmations from what emerges from ethological studies. They are similar to us as much as we are like them.\nMeeting with prof. Roberto Marchesini\nRoberto Marchesini\, philosopher\, ethologist and zoo-antropologist teaches in several universities. In 1997 he founded SIUA (School of Human-Animal)\, of which he is still the director\, through which it promotes throughout Italy higher education courses on relationship with pets\, the pet therapy and in the field of child-animal relationship. It’s the author of over a hundred publications including: Italian-Dog Dictionary (Probe\, 2010)\, Against animal rights? (2014)\, Fundamentals of zoo-antropology (2014)\, Animal Epiphany. The overman as revelation (2014) and Ethology philosophical. In search of animal subjectivity (2016).

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Lecture at Stony Brook University
DESCRIPTION:Darwin Day Lecture\nFriday\, February 10\, 2017\, 7:30 P.M.\nStony Brook University\, Stony Brook NY USA 11794\ncontact jeffrey.levinton@stonybrook.edu\nEarth and Space Sciences 001 \n“What Darwin Didn’t Know” \nDr. Hopi Hoekstra \nAlexander Agassiz Professor of Biology\nHarvard University \nSUMMARY\nWhen Darwin articulated his grand theory of evolution by natural selection in 1859\, he was still missing one crucial piece: while he recognized that offspring resembled their parents\, he didn’t know how this information was transmitted from one generation to the next. In the last 150 years\, not only has DNA been discovered as the carrier of genetic information\, but we are increasingly able to link specific genes to the traits that they encode. Now\, we can study how traits evolve – as Darwin did – but also find evidence for evolution at a once unimaginable level: in DNA\, genes and genomes. In this presentation\, I will tell you about our work studying evolution in action – by combining experiments in both the lab and the field – linking genes to traits and ultimately to survival. \nBIOGRAPHY\nHoekstra is an evolutionary geneticist who studies the molecular basis of adaptation in wild mice. Since 2006 she has been an Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology at Harvard University. She became a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator in 2013\, and in 2016\, she was elected into the National Academy of Sciences. In 1994\, Hoekstra received her B.A. with Highest Honors at the University of California Berkeley and got her PhD in Zoology at the University of Washington in 2000. She was a NIH NRSA Fellow at the University of Arizona\, and then an assistant professor at UC San Diego before joining the faculty at Harvard. She is an internationally renowned biologist who has made major strides in developing an approach that connects evolution in the wild to mechanisms at the molecular level. \nDarwin Day is supported by the Department of Ecology and Evolution\, the Provost of Stony Brook University\, and the Living World Lecture Series of Science Open Nights.

SUMMARY:The Darwin Day Lecture 2017\, with Lawrence Krauss | Cosmic natural selection
DESCRIPTION:Each February\, people around the world come together for Darwin Day\, a celebration of the life of Charles Darwin and his enormously influential discovery of evolution by natural selection. The BHA has organised a Darwin Day Lecture in London each year since 2003\, and it is the largest event of its kind in Britain\, with more than 1\,000 people registering to attend the sold-out lecture in each year. \nDoors open at 19:00 for a 19:30 start. Tickets cost £15\, £13 for BHA members\, and only £10 for students. \nPlease note that tickets must be booked online in advance of the event\, and that sales end at 18:00 on 9 February\, unless tickets have sold out before then. \nAbout Lawrence Krauss\nLawrence M. Krauss is an internationally-renowned theoretical physicist with wide research interests\, which include the early universe\, the nature of dark matter\, general relativity\, and neutrino astrophysics. He has investigated questions ranging from the nature of exploding stars to issues of the origin of all mass in the universe. He is currently Foundation Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and Physics Department at Arizona State University\, and Inaugural Director of the Origins Project\, a national centre for research and outreach on origins issues\, from the origins of the universe\, to human origins\, to the origins of consciousness and culture. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982\, and is the only physicist to have received awards from all three national US physics societies. \nKrauss is the author of over 300 scientific publications\, as well as numerous popular articles on physics and astronomy. He is the author of ten popular books\, including the international bestseller The Physics of Star Trek (1995) and most recently A Universe from Nothing (2012)\, which immediately became a New York Times Bestseller and has now been translated into 24 different languages. It argues that not only can our universe naturally arise from nothing\, without supernatural effects\, but that it probably did. His newest book\, The Greatest Story Ever Told… So Far\, will appear in March 2017.
