DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our 4th Annual Darwin themed scavenger hunt at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Have your picture taken with Charles Darwin – Thanks to artist Carl Buell! \nMake new friends and visit the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History….Let the wild rumpus begin! \n12:45pm -1:00pm Meet at the Atrium Cafeteria (Ground Floor) \n1:30pm Craft a Charles Darwin Beard – Atrium Cafeteria \n2:00pm Form groups for Scavenger Hunt through out the NH Museum exhibits \n3:30pm Dessert and party favors (prizes) \nOur event will begin with an impromptu meet and greet at 1pm- look for us – in the busy Atrium Cafeteria (ground floor)\, We are usually located to the left of the elevators\, look for Darwin themed party fare (upright life-size version of Charles Darwin himself like the photo above). Beginning at 1:30pm – We will make our very own Charles Darwin beard (simple fun craft for all ages) to wear throughout the museum during our scavenger hunt. Finally\, we will end with a celebratory dessert in Darwin’s honor (cake and party favors included!) Imagine that! \nIf you want to continue the festivities –Join us for dinner after the event\, time:TBD – We will be meeting at Whitlow’s on Wilson in Arlington Virginia after the event for dinner located at 2854 Wilson Blvd\, Arlington\, VA 22201-3806 \nPlease wear your Camp Quest T-Shirt or funny Darwin T-shirt! Add fun Flair to your shirt too! Political pins\, your favorite quote\, animals…whatever makes you – YOU! \nThis Darwin Day will be celebrated by the GLOBAL community as a toast to the common good of all humanity. We will all want to develop events to Celebrate Darwin\, Science and Humanity and come together as one human family in appreciation of verifiable knowledge that has been acquired solely through human curiosity and ingenuity. Scientific knowledge has been of great value to all of us. It is our hope that the Celebration of Science and Humanity will be so well established that DURING THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR we will all want to continue to work to make February the 12th a International day to recognize Verifiable Scientific Knowledge and to appreciate the connection of Humankind to the acquisition of this knowledge. \n** Please note ** This is not a Smithsonian sponsored event. This event is hosted by Veronica Chenik Gilmore and Camp Quest Chesapeake (Campquest.org) campers and counselors.\nThis is a free event and open to everyone! If you wish to join us\, please visit our Facebook page (Please like us for updates!) and message us for more information on location meet-up and instructions for the Darwin Day Scavenger Hunt. We will add you to our Darwin Group and share details specifically in real time leading up to the event and during the event. ** Communication is key\, and smart phones are necessary in order to participate with the scavenger event. Because the Museum is extremely busy on Saturdays\, it’s extremely important that we have a head count of everyone attending. We look forward to meeting new faces and seeing CQ friends again! \nVeronica Chenik Gilmore \nCheck out our Darwin Day video on YouTube “Make a Beard on Darwin Day”

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Lecture at Stony Brook University
DESCRIPTION:Darwin Day Lecture\nFriday\, February 10\, 2017\, 7:30 P.M.\nStony Brook University\, Stony Brook NY USA 11794\ncontact jeffrey.levinton@stonybrook.edu\nEarth and Space Sciences 001 \n“What Darwin Didn’t Know” \nDr. Hopi Hoekstra \nAlexander Agassiz Professor of Biology\nHarvard University \nSUMMARY\nWhen Darwin articulated his grand theory of evolution by natural selection in 1859\, he was still missing one crucial piece: while he recognized that offspring resembled their parents\, he didn’t know how this information was transmitted from one generation to the next. In the last 150 years\, not only has DNA been discovered as the carrier of genetic information\, but we are increasingly able to link specific genes to the traits that they encode. Now\, we can study how traits evolve – as Darwin did – but also find evidence for evolution at a once unimaginable level: in DNA\, genes and genomes. In this presentation\, I will tell you about our work studying evolution in action – by combining experiments in both the lab and the field – linking genes to traits and ultimately to survival. \nBIOGRAPHY\nHoekstra is an evolutionary geneticist who studies the molecular basis of adaptation in wild mice. Since 2006 she has been an Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology at Harvard University. She became a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator in 2013\, and in 2016\, she was elected into the National Academy of Sciences. In 1994\, Hoekstra received her B.A. with Highest Honors at the University of California Berkeley and got her PhD in Zoology at the University of Washington in 2000. She was a NIH NRSA Fellow at the University of Arizona\, and then an assistant professor at UC San Diego before joining the faculty at Harvard. She is an internationally renowned biologist who has made major strides in developing an approach that connects evolution in the wild to mechanisms at the molecular level. \nDarwin Day is supported by the Department of Ecology and Evolution\, the Provost of Stony Brook University\, and the Living World Lecture Series of Science Open Nights.

SUMMARY:The Darwin Day Lecture 2017\, with Lawrence Krauss | Cosmic natural selection
DESCRIPTION:Each February\, people around the world come together for Darwin Day\, a celebration of the life of Charles Darwin and his enormously influential discovery of evolution by natural selection. The BHA has organised a Darwin Day Lecture in London each year since 2003\, and it is the largest event of its kind in Britain\, with more than 1\,000 people registering to attend the sold-out lecture in each year. \nDoors open at 19:00 for a 19:30 start. Tickets cost £15\, £13 for BHA members\, and only £10 for students. \nPlease note that tickets must be booked online in advance of the event\, and that sales end at 18:00 on 9 February\, unless tickets have sold out before then. \nAbout Lawrence Krauss\nLawrence M. Krauss is an internationally-renowned theoretical physicist with wide research interests\, which include the early universe\, the nature of dark matter\, general relativity\, and neutrino astrophysics. He has investigated questions ranging from the nature of exploding stars to issues of the origin of all mass in the universe. He is currently Foundation Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and Physics Department at Arizona State University\, and Inaugural Director of the Origins Project\, a national centre for research and outreach on origins issues\, from the origins of the universe\, to human origins\, to the origins of consciousness and culture. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982\, and is the only physicist to have received awards from all three national US physics societies. \nKrauss is the author of over 300 scientific publications\, as well as numerous popular articles on physics and astronomy. He is the author of ten popular books\, including the international bestseller The Physics of Star Trek (1995) and most recently A Universe from Nothing (2012)\, which immediately became a New York Times Bestseller and has now been translated into 24 different languages. It argues that not only can our universe naturally arise from nothing\, without supernatural effects\, but that it probably did. His newest book\, The Greatest Story Ever Told… So Far\, will appear in March 2017.

SUMMARY:The scientific “legacy” of Filippo De Filippi
DESCRIPTION:On the 150th anniversary of the death of the Italian zoologist Filippo De Filippi (9th February 1867)\, the Turin Museum of Natural History (Museo Regionale di Scienze Natuali di Torino)\, in collaboration with the University of Turin\, has organized a workshop to celebrate his multifaceted figure\, be it as doctor\, naturalist or traveller.\nResearchers and experts will bring to the attention of the public the history\, the adventures and the value of a passionate scholar who contributed so much to the natural sciences.\nSuccessor of Giuseppe Gené as director of the Zoological Museum and founder of the Museum of Comparative Anatomy\, De Filippi was one of the earliest and most ardent supporters of Darwinism in Italy.\nEmblematic and decisive was the conference “Man and monkeys”\, held in January 1864 in Turin. During this forum it was formalized and brought to a national level the importance of Darwin’s Theory for understanding the great phenomena of the evolution of life on Earth.\nContribute: Elena Canadelli\, Camillo Vellano\, Luca Ghiraldi\, Paola Novaria\, Giacomo Giacobini

SUMMARY:Hour of discoveries «Who was the grandmother of a crocodile?»/
