SUMMARY:Darwin's Influence on Religion @ Ethical Culture Society of Westchester
DESCRIPTION:The relationship between Darwinian evolution and religion is a famously contentious\, even hostile one. However\, this popular model does not truly get to the heart of the evolution-religion issue. Today we have a well-developed scientific account of religion that sees belief in God arising naturally from mental tools that evolved to serve the survival needs of our earliest ancestors. This poses a much greater challenge for religion than simply having to re-interpret Genesis. This challenge\, however\, does not negate religion\, nor undermine its significance. Evolutionary accounts of religion uncover a common human experience beneath the diversity of religious traditions. Despite the deep conflicts between religions\, each gives expression to a deeper\, and commonly shared moral impulse. From this view\, religion is an attempt to bring out this common thread of our humanity. This humanistic conception of religion fits comfortably within a Darwinian worldview. \nJohn Teehan\, Professor and Chair of the Department of Religion\, holds an M.A. in Psychology (Queens College\, 1987) and a Doctorate in Philosophy (Graduate Center\, CUNY\, 1992). He joined the full time Hofstra Faculty in 1998. His main research focus is on the cognitive/evolutionary study of morality and religion\, with a special interest in religious morality and religion’s role in conflict. He explored these topics in his book\, In the Name of God: The Evolutionary Origins of Religious Ethics and Violence (2010\, Wiley-Blackwell). His work is also concerned with the interaction of cognitive-evolutionary theories and the philosophy of religion\, particularly as this relates to the Problem of Evil and questions of religious belief. He writes and lectures widely on these topics. Dr. Teehan is also on the editorial board of Evolutionary Psychological Science\, and Associate Editor of Science\, Religion and Culture.

DESCRIPTION:The event\, at the SESI-CCYA Centro Cultural Yves Alves\, in the historic city of Tiradentes\, in the state of Minas Gerais\, will present two BBC films about Darwin\, shown at the VerCiencia International Exhibition of Science on TV. \n

SUMMARY:Darwin Day: 11° Darwin Day in Correggio: Humans and Humanoids
DESCRIPTION:Humans and humanoids\nIn the near future man will live and work with robots built as his image and likeness\, increasingly sophisticated in the cognitive and emotional aspects. A fascinating perspective that raises unavoidable questions which we must be ready to answer. We have in our country an institute of high international level\, the IIT Genoa\, which is engaged on this research and that gave birth to the project “iCub” the creation of a robot the size of a 5 year old boy. Designed to address the border between mechatronics and artificial intelligence\, it has a sight\, sound\, tactile skin and language\, learn new things every day\, is able to play\, to write\, to recognize objects and so on.\nMeeting with prof. Giorgio Metta\nGiorgio Metta is one of the fathers of “iCub”; engineer\, is the Director of “iCub Facility” of the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa. Professor of Cognitive Robotics at the University of Plymouth (UK )\, author of several books\, worked at MIT in Boston\, has been responsible for several European projects as a consultant and expert in robotics in the programs of the European Commission. Co-author of the book “Humans and Humanoids\, living with robots” Il Mulino\, 2015.

SUMMARY:Sacramento Darwin Day 2016
DESCRIPTION:Collecting Evolution: The 1905–06 Galápagos Expedition that Vindicated Charles Darwin \nOur speaker this year is paleontologist Matthew J. James\, PhD \nWhat is Darwin Day? It is a science rush like no other\, an annual celebration of scientific inquiry honoring the life and work of the great Charles Darwin (born February 12\, 1809)\, and sponsored worldwide by community and educational groups. This will be Sacramento’s 19th annual Darwin Day event. For its very respectable history\, visit the International Darwin Day Foundation\, and learn. \nDr. James\, our wonderful speaker\, is Chair of the Department of Geology and Professor of Paleontology and Geology at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park\, California. He will entertain and inform us about the 1905–06 scientific collecting expedition to the Galápagos Islands conducted by the California Academy of Sciences. His presentation will include the history of the expedition’s two-masted schooner Academy (ex-Earnest)\, built in 1875 for the U.S. Coast Survey. \nDr. James grew up on Oʻahu and did his undergraduate work at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He is the recipient of the 2011 Karl Kortum Award for Maritime History for his work on the 1905–06 expedition. He has worked on Galápagos science\, history\, and conservation for 30 years\, since first visiting the islands in 1982 on a paleontology expedition. \nClick below for full announcement\, which includes links to the online payment page and to the 2016 Sacramento Darwin Day Flyer. \nFull Announcement

SUMMARY:DARWIN DAY | DIA de DARWIN - VerCiência no Museu do Amanhã (Rio)

SUMMARY:Saskatoon 2016 Darwin Day Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:February 12th is the birthday of Charles Darwin\, and “Darwin Day” is a global celebration of science and reason. This will be the 8th celebration in Saskatoon and the 6th year that the Saskatchewan Minister of Education has recognised February 12 as Darwin Day in Saskatchewan! \nThe Saskatoon Skeptics and Centre for Inquiry Saskatoon are proud to host the annual Darwin Day celebration in Saskatoon on February 13 at 1pm. Come and celebrate Darwin’s 207th birthday with 2 presentations followed by discussions\, cake and coffee. \nOur first speaker this year is Dr. Jeffrey Lane (pictured below)\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Biology\, University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Lane’s lab combines theory and techniques from ecology\, evolutionary biology\, quantitative genetics and physiology to better understand adaptation of populations to their natural environments. They primarily work with wild mammal systems that have been studied for multiple decades. Dr. Lane will be speaking about evolutionary responses to climate change. \nOur second speaker this year is Dr. Ryan McKellar (pictured below)\, Research Scientist\, Curator of Palaeontology\, Royal Saskatchewan Museum. Dr. McKellar’s current research is focused primarily on amber inclusions and composition. His presentation is entitled Evolution through the eyes of a palaeontologist\, in which we will explore the deep-time component of evolution\, using case studies drawn from trilobites\, as well as fossil insects preserved in amber. The fossil records of these groups provide excellent examples of diversification and extinction on a global scale. They also provide an opportunity to observe evolutionary patterns across millions of years. Darwin’s work has had a lasting impact on how palaeontologists view fossils as a source of data. Ultimately\, this has made palaeontology a valuable addition to studies of the phylogeny (evolutionary relationships) and biogeography of modern organisms\, even with our increasing reliance on molecular or genetic studies. \nSchedule of Events (subject to change): \n1:00 pm Introduction & 1st Presentation (Dr. Jeffrey Lane) \n2:30 pm 2nd Presentation (Dr. Ryan McKellar) \n3:30 pm Birthday Cake & Coffee (in the foyer – no food or drink is allowed in the theatre) \n5:00 pm Pub Discussion – anyone interested can join us for further discussion & cheer – at a nearby pub (TBD) \nYou are welcome to attend all or any part of the event. There will be some short activities for children. \nFor the latest details please go to our meetup site http://www.meetup.com/Saskatoon-Skeptics/events/228505422/
