SUMMARY:Darwin-dagen

How does this effort to present the Noah’s Ark story as working in the real world actually expose fatal flaws in the biblical account? And how did Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species present evidence that exposed creation and the Ark story as hopeless explanations for the animals alive today? Come learn how evolutionary biology and other scientific fields utterly sink this creationist boat! \nSpeaker Bio:\nFred Edwords has a long history in organized humanism. For 15 years he was executive director of the American Humanist Association\, for 12 years editor of the Humanist magazine\, and for six years national director of the United Coalition of Reason. He is past president of Camp Quest\, a summer camp for freethinking children\, and has served on the board of the International Humanist and Ethical Union and the founding board of the National Center for Science Education. As a continuing voice for humanist ideas\, he has\, over the past forty years\, appeared on national and local radio and television in the United States and Canada\, been interviewed on radio and for newspapers around the world\, and has lectured in North America\, Europe\, and India. \nToday he is director of planned giving for the Humanist Foundation of the American Humanist Association and would be pleased to help you provide a future for your humanist values in your will or other estate plan. He also serves on the adjunct faculty of the Humanist Institute\, is the American Humanist Association’s historian\, and sits on the Broader Social Impacts Committee of the Hall of Human Origins at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. \nPlease tell us you’re coming (RSVP) and tell us what food you’d like to bring: https://goo.gl/7CVtxk . SUMMARY:Central Colorado Humanists celebrate Darwin Day 2016!
DESCRIPTION:Darwin Day 2016!  In commemoration of Charles Darwin’s 207th birthday and his contributions to science\, Central Colorado Humanists will host our annual birthday party!  “What Darwin Never Knew”\, a 120-minute video\, will be presented at 6:30 PM on Friday\, February 12 at the Salida Community Center.  During a brief intermission\, light refreshments will be served\, and discussion will follow.  Please join us for this free public gathering (donations accepted). \nSummary of the film: It was Darwin’s brilliance and keen observational skills as a scientist that led him to understand how natural selection could explain the staggering variety of life forms on our planet. Yet the underlying explanation for how natural selection works remained a mystery that is only now being unraveled. The riddle surrounding origins is now being linked directly to embryo development through recent research that is highlighted in this film. \nThis video originally aired on the PBS science program “Nova”. SUMMARY:Recent Developments in Natural Selection Would Please Darwin
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate Darwin Day and the Hub’s 4th birthday celebration! We will have a series of short talk/discussions starting at 6:30pm and then our keynote address will begin at 7:30pm by Professor Jeff Mitton. Stay for cake and meet Jeff after! \nDarwin made many contributions\, but none had more impact on science and society than his simple\, extensively documented\, and thoroughly convincing description of natural selection. In recent decades\, we have come to appreciate that selection in natural populations is much stronger\, and hence evolution occurs more quickly than Darwin appreciated. To demonstrate the ubiquity and strength of nature selection\, a series of local examples of selection will be presented. Local examples will include the response of mountain pine beetles to warming spring temperatutes\, the interaction of pines and mountain pine beetles\, coloration in jagged ambush bugs\, and adaptation of both limber pine and ponderosa pine to elevational gradients in the Front Range of Colorado.

SUMMARY:The First Mass Extinction of Complex life
DESCRIPTION:The First Mass Extinction of Complex life\nBy Marc Laflamme \nChemical and Physical Sciences\, UTM \nThe 540 Ma (million years ago) Cambrian Explosion represents the greatest expansion in early animal diversity on Earth. However\, what is seldom realized is that this event was preceded by a diverse suite of large complex multicellular organisms: the Ediacara biota. These enigmatic organisms comprised both early animals and extinct lineages that disappeared from the fossil record altogether. \nThree hypotheses have been proposed to explain their disappearance: \n1) An environmentally-driven Mass Extinction due to a rapid and global catastrophic environmental stress leading to the demise of the Ediacara biota\, \n2) The Cheshire Cat model that proposes a change in the geological and oceanographic conditions responsible for the fossilization of the Ediacara biota\, making their preservation impossible. Thus their disappearance represents a failure of the fossil record rather than an extinction\, and \n3) a biologically mediated replacement that proposes a replacement of the Ediacara biota by animals due to the evolution of predation and complex food webs. In addition\, the biotic replacement model predicts increasing evidence for ecosystem reorganization in response to the activity of newly evolved animals. \nThe disappearance of the Ediacara biota marks the demise of the first diverse array of large\, complex multicellular organisms. Fieldwork combining geological and paleontological investigation from around the world (Newfoundland\, Namibia\, Australia\, and Iran) has allowed me to evaluate the tempo and mode of the Ediacaran extinction\, and give added context to the dramatic Cambrian radiation of complex animals. I was recently on Quirks and Quarks talking about this topic. It is particularly relevant given the attention that human-induced climate change is getting in the press these days. Here is a link to the interview\, if you would like to hear it: \nhttp://www.cbc.ca/radio/quirks/quirks-quarks-for-sep-19-2015-1.3233930/the-extinction-of-the-ediacarans-1.3233961 \n============== \nThe event will be preceded by a brief introduction to the upcoming “Dawn of Life Gallery” at the Royal Ontario Museum by asst. curator\, Dave Rudkin.

SUMMARY:Darwindagen: evolusjon med Erik Tunstad
Velkommen!

SUMMARY:The ASU Center for Evolution & Medicine Presents: “The Evolution of Goodness\, Justice and Empathy” with Dr. Lee Dugatkin
DESCRIPTION:Lecture begins at 5:30pm\, Reception to follow at 6:30pm. Please RSVP at the link below. \nThe Evolution of Goodness\, Justice and Empathy \nWe humans often display acts of kindness and generosity. As it turns out\, nonhumans are also good to one another\, sacrificing to help those around them. But why? Why do both humans and animals show such altruistic\, self-sacrificial behavior? Scientists and philosophers have long pondered these questions. In a fast-moving\, action packed talk\, I will bring us up to date on what we know and what we don’t know about the roots of goodness by focusing on both the fascinating history of this subject\, which includes true stories that are the stuff of movies\, and the latest\, cutting edge research in the field of evolution and behavior\, including my own work on altruism. \nDr. Dugatkin is a Professor and Distinguished University Scholar in the Department of Biology at The University of Louisville. His main area of research interest is the evolution of social behavior. His lab studies the evolution of cooperation\, the evolution of aggression\, the interaction between genetic and cultural evolution\, the evolution of antibiotic resistance\, and the evolution of risk-taking behavior. Dr. Dugaktin has spoken at over 125 universities\, written 150 articles on evolution and behavior\, and authored two widely-used textbooks including: Principles of Animal Behavior and Evolution. \nThe Arizona State University Center for Evolution & Medicine is a university-wide Presidential Initiative whose mission is to improve human health by establishing evolutionary biology as an essential basic science for medicine\, worldwide. The Center brings leading scientists to ASU to join existing faculty in research that demonstrates the power of evolutionary biology to address problems in medicine and public health. The new courses and degrees they create will begin to meet the growing demand for such experiences\, and will educate a generation of future researchers and health professionals. Many of these experiences will be at ASU\, but others will be available online open access worldwide\, providing the authoritative content that has long been needed to bridge the gap between evolutionary biology and medicine. evmed.asu.edu
