SUMMARY:Darwin Day 2023: Collezioni\, Tassonomia\, Evoluzione

SUMMARY:2024 Darwin Day with NABT & NCSE
DESCRIPTION:Sixty-six million years ago\, “an asteroid some seven miles across slammed into the Earth\, leaving a geologic wound over 50 miles in diameter.” Approximately 75% of known species vanished. Yet many life forms managed to survive the catastrophe\, from feathered dinosaurs to our primate ancestors. \nJoin us for a special encore presentation of the popular “Road to Extinction” Evolution Symposium that was presented at the 2023 NABT Conference in Baltimore. The webinar will feature Riley Black\, the award-winning author of The Last Days of the Dinosaurs\, who will replay what made the difference between survival and extinction as the Age of Dinosaurs ended and the Age of Mammals began. \nNABT will be using Zoom Webinar for this event and login instructions will be sent via email from conference@nabt.org. 7:00PM – 8:00PM ET (6:00PM CT / 5:00PM MT / 4:00PM PT). SUMMARY:Science in the Virtual Pub - Darwin Days
DESCRIPTION:Join the Paleontological Research Institution virtually for Science in the Virtual Pub to celebrate Darwin Days. \nThe talk\, the Late Devonian Mass Extinction: the view from New York\, will be given by Andrew Bush\, Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences and Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut. \nIf we didn’t have fossils\, we wouldn’t know much about extinction: fossils were key evidence in convincing scientists that species actually do go extinct and that many species go extinct at the same time during global catastrophes. As we approach the “Sixth Mass Extinction”\, what else can fossils tell us? I’ll talk about lessons from the Late Devonian mass extinction in New York and northern Pennsylvania\, with a focus on animals living in shallow marine habitats. Why did some species live and others die\, and what happened to the survivors after the extinction?

SUMMARY:Balena o balenottera?

SUMMARY:16th Annual Darwin Day Dinner - Saturday\, Feb 10\, 2024\, Westport CT
DESCRIPTION:“Using the Oceans to Address Climate Change” Join us for cocktail hour\, dinner\, science quiz (with prizes!)\, and a presentation by Yale Professor Matthew Eisaman at the 16th Annual Darwin Day Dinner Saturday\, February 10\, 2024\, 6:00pm \nThere is scientific consensus that\, in addition to emissions reduction\, limiting global warming to acceptable levels will also require the active removal of billions of tons of carbon dioxide per year from the air. Is it possible to speed up the Earth’s processes for regulating carbon dioxide from their natural timescale of hundreds of thousands of years to decades? Professor Eisaman will introduce us to the burgeoning field of “carbon dioxide removal” and describe efforts in his lab to accelerate the natural role of the oceans in regulating the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. \nMatthew Eisaman is an Associate Professor at Yale University in the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences and the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture. His current research is focused on novel methods of electrochemical ocean carbon dioxide removal\, including its commercialization\, effects on marine ecosystems\, the importance of social license\, and the potential for colocation and co-benefits with other carbon capture approaches. He has worked on a wide range of climate change solutions\, and is broadly interested in how Earth’s natural processes can be leveraged and accelerated to minimize the worst effects of the climate crisis. \nReserve/pay online at DarwinDayCT.org or mail a check.

DESCRIPTION:In a celebration of scientific curiosity and the contributions of biologists\, Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Biology is set to celebrate Darwin Day Feb. 12 with special guest speaker Dr. David Hillis from The University of Texas at Austin. \n \nEmbracing the spirit of inquiry that defines Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking contributions to evolutionary theory\, Hillis will give his talk on Darwin’s “Tree of Life” hypothesis. \nHillis is the Alfred W. Roark Centennial Professor in Natural Sciences at UT Austin\, where he studies molecular evolution and biodiversity in the Department of Integrative Biology. He is the director of UT Austin’s Biodiversity Center and also directs the Dean’s Scholars Program of the College of Natural Sciences. \n“We are delighted to have Dr. Hillis on the SFA campus to speak at this special event as we gather together to celebrate\, remember and reflect on not only the contributions of Darwin but also the contributions of many scientists in general\,” said Dr. Carmen Montaña\, assistant professor of biology. \nHillis’ research is focused on the tree of life and how we can use it to understand processes of evolution. He is one of the foremost evolutionary biologists today investigating the evolutionary relationships among living organisms. His work has helped the study of the evolutionary development of a species or a group of organisms throughout most fields of molecular biology in recent years\, from studies of the epidemiology of human immunodeficiency viruses to studies of the origin of life. \nHillis’ research appears in over 200 scientific publications\, and he has authored numerous books\, including his most recent: “Armadillos to Ziziphus: A Naturalist in the Texas Hill Country.” In recognition of his contributions to evolutionary biology\, he has received many honors\, including being elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as the National Academy of Sciences. He has served as president of the Society for the Study of Evolution and the Society of Systematic Biologists. \nHillis will give his featured talk\, “Applications of the Great Tree of Life\,” from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Miller Science Building\, Room 139\, on the SFA campus.

SUMMARY:Heroes of Evolution Darwin Day Talk: Francis Arnold — When Engineering Meets Evolution
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Presentation in Second Life\nLong gone are the days of dustry textbooks filled with examples of evolution seeking to capture the hows and whys of species came to be on the planet. Modern biology is progressing forward MAKING evolution happen. Genes and whole organisms are made to be evolved in a flask or test tube and modern computational methods can both guide and explain the complexity that is happening. \nThe primary revolutionary in this change was the scientist Francis Arnold. In her seminal work she adapted an enzyme that worked well in an aqueous environment to work well in an organic solvent by creating mutations\, picking the best working ones\, and mutating those\, and repeating the process. This is a technique called directed evolution and has found its way into engineering in many sectors from agriculture\, pharmaceuticals\, environmental remediation\, and chemical synthesis just to name a few. \nFor this seminal contribution she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018. \nCome to this Darwin Day talk in which we celebrate the professional achievements of Francis Arnold and have an introduction to the world of directed evolution and synthetic biology. \nBy Dr. Stephen L. Gasior

SUMMARY:Sexual Selection and the Differences Between the Sexes in Mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx)
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Prof. Jo Setchell\, Department of Anthropology\, Durham University\nFebruary 15\, 2024 lecture from 3 pm – 4:30 pm with a light reception following\nFreeman Auditorium\, HUB-Robeson Center \nCharles Darwin wrote that ‘no other member in the whole class of mammals is coloured in so extraordinary a manner’. In addition to brightly coloured skin\, male mandrills possess long canine teeth and sternal scent-glands\, while females show exaggerated pink sexual swellings. I will review what we have learned from long-term studies of semi-free ranging mandrills in Franceville\, Gabon\, showing how broadening traditional perspectives on sexual selection beyond the ostentatious results of intense sexual selection on males leads to an understanding of more subtle and cryptic forms of competition and choice in both sexes. \nCo-sponsored by the Center for Human Evolution and Diversity in the College of the Liberal Arts and Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences \n

SUMMARY:Darwin Day at the Thomas A. Greene Geological Museum
DESCRIPTION:Darwin Day is a public outreach event celebrating the life and times of one of the most brilliant and influential Victorian naturalists\, Charles R. Darwin. Darwin was an avid geologist and biologist who most famously developed the theory of natural selection—one of the driving mechanisms behind biological evolution—published in his seminal work: On the Origin of Species. Today\, this theory forms the foundation for many of our natural sciences. Darwin Day is a national celebration of Darwin’s scientific legacy typically held on (or near) his birthday. \nThis event is free and open to guests of all ages. Many wonderful geological and biological specimens will be available to observe\, with volunteers on hand to explain their fascinating histories. Learning tables will focus on the natural history of Wisconsin and the contributions of the Thomas A. Greene to our understanding of local Wisconsin geology\, with many rare and beautiful samples on display in the Greene Geological Museum. Other activities will be available throughout the day\, including scientific lectures presented by UWM scientists and guest speakers\, a scavenger hunt\, coloring and crafts for young kids\, and a free planetarium show. See the activities list and schedule of events below for more information. \nWe can’t wait to see you there!
