SUMMARY:Eugenie Scott presents Darwin\, Evolution\, Myth – and Humanism
DESCRIPTION:Details\n\n\nCharles Darwin’s religious views have been vigorously debated. The son and grandson of well-known 19th-century freethinkers\, he nonetheless had a conventional religious upbringing\, and scholars agree that for at least the early part of his life\, he was conventionally religious. His views changed later in life\, drifting more towards the rejection of Christianity held by his father and grandfather. One explanation for this change is the development of his idea of evolution by natural selection\, though there is not yet a scholarly consensus on this. Today\, science\, and perhaps especially evolution\, is seen as central to modern Humanism\, and it is variously embraced and vigorously rejected by people of many religious perspectives. But how well does evolution work as religion? Is\, as E.O. Wilson once said\, “The evolutionary epic is probably the best myth we will ever have”? \nOur speaker\nEugenie C. Scott\, a physical anthropologist\, humanist\, and science education pioneer\, is retired as founding Executive Director of The National Center for Science Education: She is a native of Wisconsin and graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee(B.S. and M.S) and the University of Missouri (Ph.D.). She authored two books on issues around the teaching of creationism in public schools and was a consultant for the legal team that won the federal court case that disallowed it. Eugenie has been honored by numerous organizations for her work in science education. She and her husband now reside in California. \n\n\n———————-\nThis event is free and is limited to 100 registrants.

SUMMARY:Quercus Circus: The Biodiversity and Ecological Value of Oaks
DESCRIPTION:Oaks are one of the defining tree species in our world\, with a long and fascinating history. Charles Darwin considered the nature of oak species to be “a thorny problem”\, but new genetic research suggests that we have come to a nuanced understanding of the oak species concept. This seminar will demystify the genus Quercus by walking through the branches of the oak tree of life. You will discover more about the natural history of oaks and the role they serve at the ecosystem level\, including how current research aims to shed light on the ecological role of hybridization.

SUMMARY:"Mass Extinction in Our Once and Future World"
DESCRIPTION:14th Annual Darwin Day Celebration\n\n\nMass Extinction in Our Once and Future World is topic for Feb 12 Darwin Day \n  \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe story of life on Earth is still being told. Dinosaurs no longer roam the planet. Species come and go. But what does it all mean? And\, more importantly\, can the fossil record of past mass extinctions inform us of what is likely to come? Dr. Pincelli Hull\, Yale U. Assistant Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences and Assistant Curator of Invertebrate Paleontology at Yale Peabody Museum\, will explore these questions at the 14th Darwin Day CT Celebration which will be held online on Sat February 12\, 2022\, hosted and sponsored by the Humanists and Freethinkers of Fairfield County. Register at bit.ly/DarwinDayCT2022 \n\nDr. Hull writes\, “I am broadly interested in the evolution and ecology of open ocean ecosystems and species over long-time scales\, as these are the scales on which species evolve and go extinct and ecosystems collapse and reassemble” Her presentation entitled\, Mass Extinctions in our Once and Future World will  “provide an introduction to the scientific study of mass extinction events\, an overview of mass extinctions through time\, and insights from the ancient world for our ongoing biodiversity crisis.” \nThe event also features audience participation in a challenging and entertaining science quiz developed by retired science teacher Mitch Kalmus. No prior training is required to enjoy this social event\, with brain teasers and humor. \nDARWIN DAY is an international celebration of science and humanity held around Charles Darwin’s February 12th birthday\, celebrating the discoveries and life of the man\, and expressing gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge\, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity\, has contributed to the advancement of humanity. \nDr. Hull received her doctorate from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at University of California at San Diego. She has published extensively in numerous scientific journals\, and is the recipient of many fellowships\, grants\, and academic awards. \nShe is an enthusiastic coach of the next generation of young scientists mentoring not only undergraduates and graduate students but also providing opportunities for secondary students. Dr. Hull’s lab participates and supports two outreach programs for high school students in New Haven\, run by EVOLUTIONS (EVoking Learning and Understanding Through Investigations of the Natural Sciences) at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. She will be one of the featured scientists in an upcoming children’s book. To find out more about her lab go to https://people.earth.yale.edu/profile/pincelli-hull/about \nRegister at bit.ly/DarwinDayCT2022 for Darwin Day CT Celebration online free-of-charge on February 12\, 2022.

SUMMARY:Boston Humanists Darwin Day Talk: Darwin's Apostles with Dr. Abby Hafer
DESCRIPTION:Greater Boston Humanists will celebrate upcoming Darwin Day (February 12) with Dr. Abby Hafer of Curry College on the Sunday\, FEBRUARY 13\, at 1:30 pm with our Darwin Day Talk and celebration. This Zoom event is our way of celebrating Science on the week of Darwin Day\, a major Humanist and secular community holiday “celebrating the principles of intellectual bravery\, perpetual curiosity\, scientific thinking\, and hunger for truth as embodied in Charles Darwin.” \nAbby’s talk is entitled ‘Darwin’s Apostles’:\nWhen the discovery of evolution by natural selection was announced\, neither of the scientists who discovered it were present at the announcement! Who did the hatchet work for evolution? Why\, Darwin’s apostles\, of course!\nCharles Darwin was a recluse in later life. He wrote earth-shattering books but preferred to have others defend them. \nFortunately\, scientists like Thomas Huxley\, Joseph Hooker\, Asa Gray\, John Draper\, and evolution’s co-discoverer Alfred Russel Wallace were all willing to go to bat on evolution’s behalf. They were colorful\, distinguished\, and tenacious. \nCome find out more about them and their relevance to current troubles with fake news and science denialism. \nDr. Abby Hafer is the author\, with David Orenstein\, of ‘Darwin’s Apostles’. She is also the author of ‘The Not-So-Intelligent Designer—Why Evolution Explains the Human Body and Intelligent Design Does Not’. She has a doctorate in zoology from Oxford University and teaches human anatomy and physiology at Curry College. She also serves on the Board of AHA. \nDr. Hafer is also the co-author of Bill H.471\, a bill in the Massachusetts legislature which requires that all science taught in public schools be based on peer-reviewed science. She hopes that someday\, reality-based public science education will be thus protected all over the country. \nZoom information link for our Sunday 2/13 meeting:\nhttps://smartrecovery.zoom.us/j/154575482 \nOr\, you may use PHONE: +1-929-436-2866\, meeting number 154575482# US.\nRSVP on bostonhumanists.org Events Calendar

SUMMARY:Darwin Day 2023: "FOSSILS: Messages From Ancient Worlds" with Bryce Hand
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual Darwin’s Birthday celebration! This year\, Bryce Hand\, Professor Emeritus of Geology at SU\, will give a talk called FOSSILS: Messages from Ancient Worlds (see below). And this year\, to increase the birthday excitement\, we invite you to bring along your favorite science-themed snack or dessert. \nCome find us at the Community Library of DeWitt & Jamesville\, downstairs in the large Community Room. We will also be Zooming the talk at this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7630427646 \nBryce is always a fascinating speaker\, so please join us! \nAre fossils scarce as those proverbial hens’ teeth? Not at all! In fact\, many of our Syracuse buildings are literally made of them. \nBut are they more than curiosities? Absolutely! \nWithout fossils\, we’d never have known dinosaurs existed. Or pterodactyls. Or trilobites. Biologists would long ago have figured out evolutionary relationships among organisms\, but without fossils they’d have had no way of correctly reconstructing ancestors and intermediaries. \nThis talk will look at some of the ways organisms become part of the fossil record and at the many kinds of information they provide about past environments. And we’ll see why\, without fossils\, it would have been virtually impossible to establish time relationships between sedimentary layers in widely separated regions. \nSimply put\, fossils are important! Our knowledge of Earth’s past would be ever-so diminished without them.

SUMMARY:PRI Darwin Days Keynote Presentation: Great Steps in the History of Life: The Origin of Limbed Vertebrates
DESCRIPTION:The late part of the Devonian Period (385-363 million-years-ago) was a consequential interval in the history of life and includes the origin of limbed vertebrates from finned precursors. We will discuss this evolutionary transition with emphasis on recent discoveries of fossil material from the ends of the Earth\, and our own “backyard”. \nTo join the event\, please register on zoom.

SUMMARY:Richard Lenski\, founder of the long-term evolution experiment\, to deliver 2023 Darwin Day Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Richard Lenski\, a world-renowned evolutionary biologist whose long-term evolution experiment of the microorganism Escherichia coli has been running for over three decades\, will deliver the 2023 Darwin Day Lecture on Wednesday\, Feb. 8. Lenski’s talk\, part of Vanderbilt’s Evolutionary Studies Initiative International Darwin Day celebrations\, will begin at 3:10pm CT in Buttrick 101\, preceded by snacks and soft drinks. The event is free and open to the public. \nLenski is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, a MacArthur fellow\, and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences. In 2021\, Lenski received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for the Study of Evolution. \nResearchers have long-pondered the repeatability of evolution. The paleontologist Stephen J. Gould famously wondered what would happen if we could replay the “tape of life”. Would evolution follow the same paths as it had once before? Or would each rewind result in a totally different outcome? To experimentally approach this question\, Lenski began in 1988 to cultivate 12 independent E. coli populations\, all from the same stock. From this simple experiment\, the LTEE (Long Term Evolution Experiment) was born. 35 years later\, these 12 populations have evolved independently for over 75\,000 generations and have been the subject matter of over 150 studies from researchers all over the world. \nLenski and his collaborators found that the 12 populations show striking similarities in their evolutionary trajectories over time. However\, only one of the 12 populations ever evolved the ability to consume citrate. While there is potential for some striking differences\, Lenski’s experiments suggest that evolution\, under the same general conditions\, will proceed in the same general ways. \nLenski and his collaborators have also done pioneering work on digital evolution using Avida\, an open-source computational platform for studying artificial life. Using Avida\, they showed that the process of evolution can produce complex features from simpler building blocks. Prior to Lenski’s studies\, creationists had argued that such a process was impossible. \nLenski earned his B.A.\, at Oberlin College in Ohio (1976) and his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1982). He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He then spent a year as a visiting professor at Dartmouth College and earned a tenure track position at the University of California in Irvine. He has been a professor at Michigan State University since 1991. \nThe Vanderbilt Evolutionary Studies Initiative was established in August 2019 with the aim of uniting a remarkably diverse array of scholars from a variety of disciplines with broad interests and expertise in evolution-related fields. \nRich Lenski
