SUMMARY:Evolution of Language: Syntax\, Pantomime\, and Sign Language
DESCRIPTION:How did humans start to speak? What was the language that we originally spoke sounded like? Or maybe not SOUNDED but LOOKED like? Why only people use language? These are just a few general questions that the organisers of the meeting are going to address during International Darwin Day organised at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń by members of Centre for Language Evolution Studies. \nThe event is going to consist of two parts. The first part is going to introduce the fundamentals: theory of evolution\, language origin scenarios\, the role of syntax in communication\, protolanguage\, non-verbal communication\, sign languages\, and the differences between human language and animal communication. \nThe second part is going to be a workshop oriented at acquainting participants of the event with methodological aspects of research in evolution of language. Here\, types of experiments conducted at the Centre\, and the way they were conducted\, are going to be presented. Finally\, attendants will have a chance to design their own experiments and find what software they can use in their pursuits.

SUMMARY:2020 Darwin Day Special Nights : This View of Science
DESCRIPTION:2020 Darwin Day Special Nights\nThis View of Science\n10\, 11\, 12 February 2020 \nOn February 12 in 1809\, Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury\, England\,. On the Origins of Species published by Darwin in 1859 changed the world literally overnight and the impact has continued even now. Darwin’s birth day 12 February is the International Darwin Day. Special events are held to celebrate his achievement and to promote the sense of wonder around the world.\nDarwin conclueded On The Origin of Species with “this view of life.” The main theme of this year’s Darwin Day event at the Liberal Arts Lab Darwin Room is “This View of Science” It consists of three nights Darwin Discourse from 10 to 12 February. The host of the talk events will be Masataka Watanabe who is a leading Darwin researcher and science writer in Japan. \n☆Special Talk Events\nThe First Night: 10 February 19:30～21:30\n The Delight of Science Essay\n Hazuki Saisyou + Masataka Watanabe \nScience essays are one of the genres that talk about science. In Japan\, there are traditions beginning with Torahiko Terada and Ukichiro Nakatani\, but the origin might be sought in the classic diary literatures as The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon that refer to the changing seasons. Tonight we will talk about the delight of science essays. \nThe Second Night: 11 February 18:00 ~ 20:00\nHow to enjoy evolution from Steve Gould\nMakio Mukai+Masataka Watanabe \nStephen Jay Gould\, the author of the classic popular science book Wonderful Life\, was a prominent evolutionary biologist and science essay expert. His themes include not only science\, but also pop topics such as Mickey Mouse\, Hershey’s Choco Bar\, and Major League Baseball. Dr. Mukai who is a great Gould fan and also known as Major League enthusiast will talk about how to enjoy evolution from Gould. \nThe Third Night: 12 February 19:30～21:30\nFutoshiki Ueki+Masataka Watanabe\nThe Super Darwin Prize as You Like \nThe Darwin Awards is a black joke and parody of the theory of natural selection. Regardless of it\, we will select our own Super Darwin Prize that is bestowed on the funny trials of science with a science writer Futoshiki Ueki\, the author of Our Sorrow Super Weapons. \nOrganized by Darwin Room\nCo‒organized by Japanese Association for Science Communication (JASC) \nHost and Guests \nMasataka Watanabe\nProfessor Masataka Watanabe is an evolutionary Biologist by education and a science writer by trade and the president of JASC. He is an author of six books and a co‒author of three books about history of science and evolutionary biology. He also translated over 50 English popular science books into Japanese including almost all books written by Stephen Jay Gould and On The Origin of Species. \nHazuki Saisyou\nMs. Hazuki Saisyou is a nonfiction writer. Her work covers from the relation between science and human\, sports\, to mental health. She has won a lot of literary awards. \nMakio Mukai\nDr. Makio Mukai worked at Keio University Hospital as a senior pathologist more than 30 years. He loves Major League Baseball\, S.J.Gould and his wife who is the first woman astronaut in Japan. He is also a bestselling author of a collection of essays. \nFutoshiki Ueki\nMr. Futishiki Ueki is a science writer with a reputation for humor. His latest book Our Sorrow Super Weapons digs up a lot of funny ideas for super weapons.

Discover how Darwin’s apostles\, those who carried the torch of evolutionary biology\, launched a campaign for truth that\, despite powerful opposition\, largely succeeded. Find out what they did\, where they succeeded\, where they failed\, and what we can learn from them. \nDoors open at 5:30pm. Event will include a talk by each author and time for them to sign books. Light refreshments will be available. \nDarwin as Apical Freethought Ancestor \nDavid Orenstein\, Professor of Anthropology at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York \nDarwin’s work in biology supported the work of scientists\, freethinkers\, and social activists in the United States and Europe. Building on such work has led us to the global pursuit of a humane understanding of our world. We stand on the shoulders of humanist giants who\, in turn\, stood on Darwin’s seminal works to inform their ideas and activism. \nWhat Today’s fighters against Fake News Can Learn from Darwin’s Apostles \nDr. Abby Hafer\, Senior Lecturer in Biology at Curry College in Milton \nBattling falsehoods pretending to be facts\, absurd counter-narratives\, and the politicization of science is nothing new for evolutionary biologists. In our current battle against fake news\, there is much that these brave scientists can teach us. \nSpeakers\nDr. David Orenstein is a full professor of anthropology at CUNY – Medgar Evers College. He is an international speaker on science education\, evolution acceptance\, and human rights. Dr. Orenstein is also the American Humanist Association’s representative to the United Nations. Early training as a primatologist has lead to a lifetime of humanist activism and concern for our understanding of the cosmos\, the Earth and our shared humanity. \nDr. Abby Hafer is a biologist\, educator\, writer\, public speaker\, and professional debunker. She has a doctorate in zoology from Oxford University and teaches human anatomy and physiology at Curry College. Her written works include the books The Not-So-Intelligent Designer\, and Darwin’s Apostles; numerous book chapters\, and articles. She debunks both the gender binary and Creationism/Intelligent Design using humor and bullet-proof science. Dr. Hafer is also the co-author of Bill H.471\, a bill in the Massachusetts legislature which requires that all science taught in public schools be based on peer-reviewed science. She hopes that someday\, reality-based public science education will be thus protected all over the country.

SUMMARY:Luncheon and Lecture: The Story of Cosmic Evolution
DESCRIPTION:What Were the Atoms in Your Body Doing 8 Billion Years Ago: The Story of Cosmic Evolution\nAlthough few people ever think about it\, the atoms that make up your body are “on loan” to you from the Earth’s “atom collection.” Thanks to modern astronomy\, we now know the history of these atoms even before they were part of the Earth. In this talk\, Dr. Andrew Fraknoi examines the history of the cosmos\, and how it evolved from the heat of the Big Bang to conditions that make astronomy fans possible. We focus on the role of exploding stars\, which create new elements and recycle them so that to be available to future generations of stars\, planets\, and life-forms. \nAndrew Fraknoi retired in 2017 as the Chair of the Astronomy Department at Foothill College\, and now teaches astronomy courses for retired people at the Fromm Institute at the University of San Francisco and the OLLI Program at San Francisco State. He served as the Executive Director of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific for 14 years. Fraknoi was the California Professor of the Year in 2007. He is the lead author on a free\, college astronomy textbook published by the non-profit OpenStax project at Rice University\, as part of a national project to reduce the costs of college. He has also written two children’s books on astronomy. The International Astronomical Union has named Asteroid 4859 Asteroid Fraknoi to honor his contributions to the public understanding of science. \nThe luncheon will start at 12:15 in the Thomas Starr King Room. We will have vegan and vegetarian options. The luncheon is $15.00 for each adult and $5.00 for each child under 18. If you do not wish to attend the luncheon\, you are still welcome to attend the free lecture which starts at 1:00.
