SUMMARY:GBH Darwin Day Celebration Talk: 'Was Darwin a Dunce?'
DESCRIPTION:We’ll get together to celebrate upcoming Darwin Day 2016 (February 12) with this\, our first GBH lecture of the new year\, at the Humanist Hub in Cambridge (there will be NO free parking this time\, sorry to say; see below for parking discount info.) \nOur gathering will take place Saturday\, January 30\, from 12:30 – 3:30 pm at the Humanist Hub. We’ll have some snacks and drinks available as we hear a special talk by our President\, Joe Gerstein\, on ‘Was Darwin a Dunce?’ \nWhen Wolfgang Mozart was 7\, it was clear where he was headed. Jascha Heifetz made his NYC debut at a sold-out Carnegie Hall in knee pants at the age of 12. John Stuart Mill was fluent in Greek at 5. Most Nobel Science prize winners have done their most meritorious work before age 30. Galileo was an esteemed celebrity from his earliest days…a true Renaissance Man! \nCharles Darwin trained to be a physician but didn’t make the grade. He then got “gentleman’s C’s” at Cambridge and failed to proceed to his planned career in the clergy. His father\, a successful physician\, despaired his second son would ever amount to anything and told him so. Charles operated in the shadow of his grandfather\, Erasmus Darwin\, a well-reputed intellectual. Who could have predicted the eventual outcome of this ineffectual performance? \nAnd then he sat on his revolutionary insights for 12 years and almost got scooped by a schoolteacher from New Zealand.\nWhat were the psychological and sociological and theological and medical issues which resulted in this bizarre procrastination of success in a man of genius? This man was sitting on top of a volcano that was about erupt into Victorian England. Perhaps he feared the controversy that would likely engulf him with the publication of his magnum opus. Actually\, one of the major struts supporting his initial thesis was mistaken\, but he had no way of knowing that the the time. \nJoe Gerstein will review some of the issues percolating in Darwin’s life and times that might have influenced his behavior. Then let’s all speculate about the importance and pertinence of each as we approach Darwin Day\, one of organized humanism’s most important tributes to science and humanity.

SUMMARY:Precursors of Humanity ... along the trail of human origins with Deby Cassill & Frans de Waal
DESCRIPTION:Ticket purchase is required: tickets to this stellar event are now available from the site\, Brown Paper Ticket:s Go here for your ticket: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2272665/ref/1128069 \nWe are excited to present two famed experts iwho will discuss how we act as we do. It’s Evolution\, after all. Join us for two lecture discussions\, followed by light refreshments and socializing. \nDr. Deby Cassill — USF’s Department of Environmental Science & Policy is unquestionably enriched with Dr. Cassill’s scientific wisdom. Aside from holding a doctorate in biology and boasting more than a decade’s worth of experience\, the professor has done extensive research on fire ants and ant behavior\, written a myriad of scholarly papers as a result\, received almost $25\,000 in grants for various research projects\, won a handful of distinguished awards\, and appeared in numerous noteworthy science publications. Despite her star status in the world of science\, Dr. Cassill is a down-to-earth\, energetic and engaging professor. As clichéd as it sounds\, she really does make learning fun — she has a natural ability to translate ideas and information without losing her students’ attention\, and a genuine enthusiasm for what she’s doing \nDr. Cassill received her Ph.D. in biology from the Florida State University. On the campus of USF St. Petersburg\, Dr. Cassill is affectionately known as the “ant whisperer.” In her quest to understand social behavior\, Dr. Cassill uses ants as surrogates for humans. She studies the survival strategies of ants encountering a variety of adverse conditions. This has undergirded the proposition that social values play an important and expanding role in shaping the basis of animal and human behavior. \nDr. Frans de Waal received his Ph.D. in Biology and Zoology from Utrecht University\, the Netherlands\, in 1977. He completed his postdoctoral study of chimpanzees while associated with Utrecht University\, in 1981\, and moved the same year to the USA. He has been a National Academy of Sciences member since 2004\, and a Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences member since 1993. \nTime featured him in 2007 as one of the World’s One Hundred Most Influential People. He is also the Director of Living Links at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center. \nHe is the author of many books and articles the latest of which is: The Bonobo and the Atheist\, In Search of Humanism among the Primates \nThis is an annual science and educational event sponsored by member organizations of Tampa Bay Coalition of Reason\, of which Center for Inquiry-Tampa Bay is a founding member. We would appreciate your support. \nDarwin Day Questions? 727-271-3549

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Lecture – Evolution: What the Fossils Say
DESCRIPTION:Among the greatest distortions and misunderstandings about evolution are the creationist attacks on the fossil record\, and whether it provides evidence for evolution. In this talk\, geologist and paleontologist Donald Prothero will review some of the amazing discoveries that have been made recently showing remarkable “transitional fossils” that documents the evolution of one group of animals from another. He also will take a broader look at the issues of creationism in the United States. \n Prothero taught college geology and paleontology for 37 years at Caltech\, Columbia\, Vassar\, and other colleges. He earned his B.A. in geology and biology from UC-Riverside and two Master’s degrees and a doctorate in geological sciences from Columbia University. The author of more than 35 books (including Abominable Science! about which he discussed at CFI-L.A. before)\, and 300 scientific papers\, mostly on the evolution of fossil mammals and on using the earth’s magnetic field changes to date fossil-bearing strata\, Prothero has been on the editorial boards of many scientific journals; received numerous fellowships; headed academic groups in geology and paleontology; conducted science tours; and received many awards in the field. He has been featured on numerous TV documentaries\, including Walking with Prehistoric Beasts\, Prehistoric Monsters Revealed and Creationism\, as well as Jeopardy! and Win Ben Stein’s Money. \nAdmission:\nPublic: $8\nStudents: $4\nContributing Members: FREE

DESCRIPTION:Join our Darwin’s Birthday Celebration! This month we are featuring Dr. Warren D. Allmon speaking on the topic “Science and the 2016 Elections (and other Oxymorons)”. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served at 1:00 and the program will begin at about 1:10pm. There will be Q&A discussion to follow the talk and a chance to mingle and meet new people. \nWarren D. Allmon is the Director of the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) in Ithaca\, NY and the Hunter R. Rawlings III Professor of Paleontology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University. He earned his A.B. in Earth Sciences from Dartmouth College in 1982\, and his Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Harvard University in 1988. He became PRI’s fourth Director in 1992. Since then\, he has been instrumental in rejuvenating PRI’s internationally-known fossil collections; starting its local\, regional\, and national programs in Earth science education; and in planning and fundraising for the Museum of the Earth\, PRI’s $11 million education and exhibit facility which opened in September 2003. In November 2004\, Allmon helped secure a formal agreement of affiliation between PRI and Cornell\, ending more than 70 years of official separation. \nAllmon is the author of more than 250 technical and popular publications. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and the Paleontological Society\, and was the recipient of the 2004 Award for Outstanding Contribution to Public Understanding of Geoscience from the American Geological Institute.

SUMMARY:DARWIN WEEK FEB 8-12
DESCRIPTION:On board Yacht La Pinta\, while exploring The Galapagos Islands\, we are celebrating Darwin Week with a series of talks and lectures related to Charles Darwin’s works. On Feb 8 we analyzed the critical thinking on Charles Darwin after writing a list of pros & cons as to why marry Emma Wedgewood\, his first cousin. On Feb 9 our Expedition Leader\, Mr. Ramiro Jacome\, talked about the Genealogy of Charles Darwin in order to undertstand how his family developed. On Feb 10\, it was the right time to look at the origin of the famous line “survival of the fittest”. Here we covered how Herbert Spencer coined this phrase\, and how Charles Darwin mentioned on the 5th edition of Origin of Species. Feb 11 saw the importance of the formal apology by The Church of England\, 126 years after his death. And\, last but not least\, the full biography lecture on Charles Darwin on Feb 12\, including the famous naming of Mount Darwin by Captain Robert Fitzroy on board HMS Beagle right on Charles Darwin’s 25th Birthday! Guests on board have been delighted with the exclusive celebration of our Darwin Week Feb 8-12\, in the Galapagos Islands.
