DESCRIPTION:2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the so-called Scopes “Monkey” Trial.  In July 1925 in tiny Dayton\, Tennessee\, first-year coach and math/physics teacher John Scopes was put on trial for violating Tennessee’s newly passed law criminalizing the teaching of human evolution in public schools. Scopes’s trial became a sensational global news story and stoked a national debate about evolution and who controls the curriculum of public schools. During his trial\, Scopes was largely forgotten\, as religious leader (and former progressive politician) William Jennings Bryan faced off against famed defense attorney and agnostic Clarence Darrow. \nAlthough Scopes’s conviction was overturned 18 months later\, the echoes from the cultural divide exposed at the Scopes Trial continue to reverberate in American society. DESCRIPTION:Topic: Hormones and Immunity in Evolutionary Perspectives \nMichael Muehlenbein is professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology at Baylor University. He holds advanced degrees in Public health and anthropology\, and has worked at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, Indiana University\, the University of Texas at San Antonio\, and now Baylor University. His academic interests include a variety of topics relating to ecological immunology\, evolutionary endocrinology\, and One Health. He is particularly interested in the roles of hormones in mediating human life history trade-offs\, affect and the behavioral immune system\, immune biomarker development\, risks of emerging infectious disease associated with human-wildlife contact and most recently\, attitudes about the COVID-19 pandemic. He has worked in 11 countries\, been primary instructor to more than 3000 students\, brought more than 250 students on 16 study abroad/international research experiences\, published two edited volumes\, and more than 100 papers\, organized two international conferences along with nine symposia\, is active in doctoral student professional development\, and is a father of four amazing kids.

DESCRIPTION:Darwin Day is a community science outreach event celebrating the life and times of one of the most brilliant and influential Victorian naturalists\, Charles R. Darwin. Darwin was an avid geologist and biologist who most famously developed the theory of natural selection—one of the driving mechanisms behind biological evolution—published in his seminal work: On the Origin of Species. Today\, this theory forms the foundation for many of our natural sciences. Darwin Day is a national celebration of Darwin’s scientific legacy typically held on (or near) his birthday. \nDarwin Day is a free event and open to guests of all ages. Many wonderful geological and biological specimens will be available to observe\, with volunteers on hand to explain their fascinating histories. Learning tables focusing on the natural history of Wisconsin and the contributions of Thomas A. Greene to our understanding of local Wisconsin geology will be spread throughout Lapham Hall\, with many rare and beautiful samples on display from the Thomas A. Greene geological collection. This lecture will draw upon the rich and diverse evidence from paleontology\, physiology\, climatology\, genetics\, microbiology\, and other fields that has led to our current understanding of the evolution of human skin. It will also explore how the preeminence of vision and language in humans paved the way for our ability to rapidly assess skin traits and then transmit impressions and value judgements of skin color and other traits to others\, often with disastrous results. Learning the basics of skin evolution instills valuable information about Darwinian evolution and a deep appreciation of the beauty of human diversity. DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Essig Museum celebrates the birthdays of Charles Darwin (February 12th\, 1809)\, Alfred Russel Wallace (January 8th\, 1823)\, and Henry Bates (February 8th\, 1825) with special behind-the-scenes tours of our collection in the Valley Life Sciences Building (VLSB). Join us for a special look at our collections featuring beetles collected by Darwin during his Voyage of the Beagle. We will also take a closer look at adaptations – traits that evolved over millions of years to help insects obtain food\, avoid predators\, and find mates. \nIn addition to our tours\, at 10:00am\, February 14\, in room 2063 VLSB\, we will have a special lecture\, as part of our Essig Brunch seminar series\, by Dr. Jim Costa (Executive Director & Professor\, Highlands Biological Station of Western Carolina University) titled “Ardent Beetle Hunters – On the Entomological Enthusiasms of Darwin & Wallace“. Abstract: “When in 1908 Alfred Russel Wallace was asked how it was that of the many people pursuing the question of species origins it was he and Darwin who discovered the principle of natural selection\, his answer surprised his audience. First and most importantly\, he said\, “in early life both Darwin and myself became ardent beetle-hunters.” Indeed\, while finches\, giant tortoises\, and birds-of-paradise loom large in Darwin and Wallace lore\, insects were far more important. He joined the University of Pittsburgh in 1988 and served as Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences from 2003 to 2011. \nDr. Hatfull’s research focuses on the molecular genetics of the mycobacteria and their bacteriophages\, and their use for educational and therapeutic uses. Dr. Hatfull has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and reviews and has co-edited four books. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology\, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor since 2002.

DESCRIPTION:A century ago in Dayton\, Tennessee\, sensation-loving journalists of the 1920s transformed a small-town misdemeanor trial\, brought under a new state law against teaching the theory of evolution in public schools\, into a legendary clash of worldviews pitting populist orator\, politician William Jennings Bryan and libertarian secularist\, attorney Clarence Darrow. Over the ensuing years\, fact and fiction blurred into the mythical version of the Tennessee Monkey Trial celebrated in bestselling books\, Broadway plays\, and Hollywood movies. In his lecture\, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Edward Larson separates history from folklore in relating the story of the Scopes trial then and thereafter. \nEd Larson holds the Darling Chair in Law and is a University Professor of History at Pepperdine University. Recipient of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize in History\, Larson served as Associate Counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives and taught for twenty years at the University of Georgia\, where he chaired the history department. This years talk is titled “Twists and Turns in Teaching Evolution over the Years” by Glenn Branch\, Deputy Director\, National Center for Science Education. \n\nControversies over the teaching of evolution in the public schools have rocked the nation over the past century. Evolution’s foes have consistently used the same arguments\, but their ambitions have shifted\, from banning the teaching of evolution through balancing it with a supposed alternative to blunting it by misrepresenting evolution as scientifically controversial. In his talk\, Glenn Branch of the National Center for Science Education will discuss the causes\, history\, and consequences of these controversies\, with a special emphasis on events in Michigan. \nGlenn Branch is deputy director of the National Center for Science Education\, a nonprofit organization that defends the integrity of American science education against ideological interference. He is the author of numerous articles on evolution education and climate education\, and the co-editor\, with Eugenie C. Scott\, of Not in Our Classrooms: Why Intelligent Design is Wrong for Our Schools (2006). His work – spanning astrophysics\, particle physics\, astrobiology\, and evolutionary biology – seeks to make what we know about the universe and our place in it accessible to public audiences. \nThis year’s Darwin Day talk\, “On Becoming Human\,” is a grand exploration of the history of our universe and the emergence of humans as “a way for the universe to know itself.”\nSacramento’s Darwin Day Educational Gala is a community-based public event conducted annually around Charles Darwin’s birthday. The event includes a cocktail hour\, a buffet dinner\, a science quiz (with prizes!)\, and a lecture by Dr. Lisa Levin\, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This is a fun and educational event. The tables compete against each other for the science quiz – and yes\, it gets competitive! We promise that everyone will go home smarter. And we have claimed\, without dispute\, that this event is the BEST SCIENCE PARTY this side of the Oort Cloud. Join us if you can. For people that are too distant\, there is a Zoom attendance option available on the website.
