SUMMARY:Darwin Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Tampa Bay Coalition of Reason\nwill present\nDarwin Day 2023\non Saturday\, February 18\,\nbeginning at 2:00 p.m. \nThis will be an in-person event at the Unitarian Universalists of Clearwater at 2470 Nursery Rd.\, as well as online via Zoom. \nTickets for the presentation are available at https://www.atheistsofflorida.org/darwin-day-2023/. \nWe are very pleased to present two outstanding speakers: \nBertha Vazquez is director of education for the Center  for Inquiry\, director of the Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science (TIES)\, a program of the Center for Inquiry and a project of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. Since its inception in April 2015\, TIES has presented over 300 professional development opportunities for middle school science teachers across the country\, providing them with free resources to effectively teach their state evolution standards in their classrooms. In December of 2021\, Bertha and fifteen fellow TIES presenters\, published a book titled On Teaching Evolution. \nRyan Cragun is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Tampa and Director of its Honors Program. He is the author of numerous academic papers and ten books\, most of which report on his research on religion and its rapidly evolving impact on society. Ryan is a good friend of the Coalition of Reason and has spoken to our group several times. For more detail on his work\, go to his website: https://www.ryantcragun.com. \nThe title of Dr. Cragun’ s presentation is: Evolution and Religion: Natural Exploits and Artificial Selection. \nA brief summary:\nThere are at least two ways to think about evolution and religion. First\, have humans evolved in a fashion that fosters religiosity? Second\, have religions evolved over time? In this far-reaching talk\, I’ll examine both questions\, drawing on recent research in social science to address whether humans are “innately religious” and whether religions evolve.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day 2023: Collezioni\, Tassonomia\, Evoluzione

DESCRIPTION:prof.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day with Nick Schweitzer - Evolution in the Courts
DESCRIPTION:This will be our annual Darwin Day meeting. Refreshments will be served. Save room for dessert! \nPresentation:\nNick will speak on the history of challenges in state and federal courts to the teaching of evolution in public schools starting with the Scopes trial in 1925\, and the adaptation (evolution) of those challenges to the changing environment imposed over time by the courts\, from Biblical Creationism to Intelligent Design\, and possibly beyond. \nBio:\nJohn Nicholas (“Nick”) Schweitzer is a retired attorney living in Madison\, Wisconsin. His legal field was professional ethics\, serving as an administrative law judge for the state agency that issued and regulated licenses for scores of professions. He also taught legal ethics as an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and conducted attorney discipline hearings for the Wisconsin Supreme Court.\nUtterly unrelated to that professional focus\, he fancies himself an “amateur scientist\,” promoting science and reason in various ways. \nHow to join us:\nGuests are welcome to join us via Zoom or in-person at:\nThe UU Church of Worcester\n90 Holden Street\nWorcester\, Massachusetts 01606 \nJoin us in person at 6:30 for our Darwin Day refreshments and fellowship. \nThe presentation will begin at 7:00.

SUMMARY:The hybrid in your genome: How recent advances in behavior and genetics are changing our view of Darwinian evolution
DESCRIPTION:Where do new species come from? Darwin proposed that the diversity of life could be explained when population divisions become magnified into new species over time. This “tree of life” thinking became our foundational metaphor for the natural world. Hybridization –– mating between species –– undercuts “tree thinking.” Until recently\, this phenomenon was regarded as an evolutionary dead end and ignored. However\, new data from diverse fields point to an inescapable conclusion: hybridization is common and can significantly impact living things (including our species!). So\, we will celebrate Darwin’s birthday by asking whether Darwin’s tree still adequately represents life’s diversity or if a new metaphor is needed.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Talk: 'How Science Works: Darwin\, Wallace\, and Evolution' by Andrew Berry
DESCRIPTION:Greater Boston Humanists invites you to join us we celebrate Darwin Day together right on February 12 with a talk by Dr. Andrew Berry of Harvard. This live lecture event is co-sponsored by GBHumanists and the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard and MIT. Darwin Day is a major Humanist and secular community holiday “celebrating the principles of intellectual bravery\, perpetual curiosity\, scientific thinking\, and hunger for truth as embodied in Charles Darwin.” \nAndrew Berry’s lecture is fully titled: “Coincidence? Charles Darwin\, Alfred Russel Wallace\, and What Their Discovery of The Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection Can Tell Us about How Science Works.” \nNatural selection is a simple idea\, and a long sought one\, but it wasn’t until 1858 that it was first unveiled. Curiously\, it was discovered not once\, but twice — by Charles Darwin and by Alfred Russel Wallace — suggesting that the milieu in which Darwin and Wallace were working made the idea particularly accessible. \nThis talk will first\, explore that milieu to identify its key components; 2nd\, examine the events that brought the trajectories of Wallace and Darwin together in 1858; and 3rd\, track their agreements and disagreements as the new science of evolution unfolded. The Darwin-Wallace story illustrates how science profits when critique and respect go together. \nDr. Andrew Berry is Assistant Head Tutor\, Integrative Biology\, and Lecturer on Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard. His research combined the techniques of field biology with those of molecular biology to seek evidence at the DNA level of Darwinian natural selection. He has given lectures on evolutionary topics to popular audiences all over the world – from Ankara to the Antarctic – occasionally drawing the ire of creationists. As an educator and popularizer\, Dr Berry seeks to demystify the most important and most misinterpreted of all biological ideas: evolution. \nJoin us for a lecture and snacks as we celebrate together in community of secular humanism!
