SUMMARY:Evolution of Language: Syntax\, Pantomime\, and Sign Language
DESCRIPTION:How did humans start to speak? What was the language that we originally spoke sounded like? Or maybe not SOUNDED but LOOKED like? Why only people use language? These are just a few general questions that the organisers of the meeting are going to address during International Darwin Day organised at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń by members of Centre for Language Evolution Studies. \nThe event is going to consist of two parts. The first part is going to introduce the fundamentals: theory of evolution\, language origin scenarios\, the role of syntax in communication\, protolanguage\, non-verbal communication\, sign languages\, and the differences between human language and animal communication. \nThe second part is going to be a workshop oriented at acquainting participants of the event with methodological aspects of research in evolution of language. Here\, types of experiments conducted at the Centre\, and the way they were conducted\, are going to be presented. Finally\, attendants will have a chance to design their own experiments and find what software they can use in their pursuits.

SUMMARY:Darwin's Apostles
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Abby Hafer will present “Darwin’s Apostles” as the Darwin Day celebration for the Humanist Association of Connecticut. \nWhen the discovery of evolution by natural selection was announced to the world\, neither of the scientists who discovered it were present at the announcement! When evolution was debated and insults traded at the notorious 1860 meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science\, the co-discoverers of evolution weren’t there\, either! Who did the hatchet work on behalf of evolution? Why\, Darwin’s apostles\, of course! Charles Darwin was famously a recluse in later life. He wrote earth-shattering books but preferred to have others defend them. Fortunately\, scientists like Thomas Huxley\, Joseph Hooker\, Asa Gray\, John Draper\, and evolution’s co-discoverer Alfred Russel Wallace were all willing to go to bat on evolution’s behalf. They were colorful\, distinguished\, and tenacious. Come find out more about them! \nDr. Abby Hafer is the author of “The Not-So-Intelligent Designer—Why Evolution Explains the Human Body and Intelligent Design Does Not.” She has a doctorate in zoology from Oxford University and teaches human anatomy and physiology at Curry College. \nWe will start with our customary half hour of coffee and conversation at 3:30 PM followed by Dr. Hafer’s presentation at about 4:00 PM.

His theory and subsequent developments help us understand how life on Earth changed with time as well as how the evolution of the whole Universe happened. \nYou will have the opportunity to observe two planets Mars and Uranus at our observatory. Uranus was discovered by W. Hershel a compatriot of Charles Darwin\, and this discovery showed that the Solar system was at least twice the size we thought. Every observer will have opportunity to experience how huge is the Solar system is. \nJoin Our Spacewalk! \nINFO & BOOKING: TEL. +357 99991111\n9 AMMOCHOSTOU\, KITI\, 7550\, LARNACA

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Lecture – Evolution in Your Lifetime (Grand Rapids)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Darwin Day Lecture\, Jeffrey K. Conner Ph.D. will be speaking on Evolution in Your Lifetime: Rapid Adaptation to a Changing Environment. \nMost people think of evolution as a slow process that occurs over millions of years\, but biologists have repeatedly demonstrated that evolution can be very rapid when environments change. This rapid adaptation can be both good and bad from a human standpoint. It can be bad when pathogenic bacteria\, insect pests\, and weeds evolve to be more successful and thus make us sick and compete with us for our food. It can also be bad when humans unintentionally exert selection – a prime example is the evolution of smaller fish due to fishing pressure on the largest individuals. \nRapid evolution can be good for humans if it means native species can adapt to the large environmental changes caused by humans and thus avoid extinction. More generally\, all life on earth depends on the process of evolutionary adaptation\, because species that are not well adapted go extinct. This talk will explain the mechanisms underlying evolutionary adaptation with examples from research on both native species and serious agricultural weeds.

SUMMARY:Darwin’s Angels
DESCRIPTION:Darwin’s angels will decend in Wageningen. How do carnivorous plants and tiger spiders attack their preys? On this subject the single American woman Mary Treat corresponded with Charles Darwin\, the British inventor of the theory of evolution. Treat is one of special women in the 19th century who fought their way into the man-made scientific stronghold of science. She is one of the ten ‘angels’ central in Darwin Café 2019 in Wageningen\, tuesday evening 12 February from 8.30 pm in Café Rad van Wageningen.\nBotanical philosopher Norbert Peeters from Leiden\, co-author and compiler of the recently released book Darwins engelen\, gives a presentation about the learned women around Darwin in Dutch.\nDarwin Café is organized for the third year in a row by biologist newspaper Bionieuws\, Wageningen University magazine Resource and Stadsbrouwerij Wageningen. The freely accessible meeting (consumption compulsory) is on occasion of International Darwin Day\, the birthday of Charles Darwin. Registration: www.facebook.com/DarwinCafe

Essential to this understanding are our studies on the immune system of sharks and their relatives\, the skates\, rays\, and chimera. As the most evolutionary distant species to have a ‘human-like’ immune system\, these provide important comparators. In this talk I’ll describe our work and what we are learning about the evolution of immune protection. \nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Helen Dooley is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) and serves on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She earned her Ph.D. in Antibody Engineering at the University of Aberdeen (UK) in 2001. She is an immunologist and educator\, heading a research team studying immune evolution. \nLinks: \nDr. Helen Dooley’s pages: \nhttp://www.medschool.umaryland.edu/profiles/Dooley-Helen/\nhttps://imet.usmd.edu/directory/helen-dooley \nBaltimore Coalition of Reason \nhttp://BaltimoreCoR.org/

SUMMARY:Twice! Science and the Double Discovery of Evolution
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Charles Darwin Day 2019\, the Secular Society of MIT presents a special talk by Harvard University evolutionary biologist and science historian Andrew Berry. Dr Berry’s research combines the techniques of field biology with those of molecular biology to seek evidence at the DNA level of Darwinian natural selection. He has given lectures on evolutionary topics to popular audiences all over the world – from Ankara to the Antarctic – occasionally drawing the ire of creationists. \nAs an educator and popularizer\, he seeks to demystify the most important and most misinterpreted of all biological ideas: evolution. He will be speaking about the double discovery of evolution by natural selection by both Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace\, and what this incident tells us about how science works. \nWHEN: Tuesday\, FEB/12\, 6pm\nWHERE: 2-190 (1st Floor\, 182 Memorial Drive\, https://whereis.mit.edu/?go=2) \nFree entry. Darwin’s birthday party with cake\, beverages\, and evolution-themed games follows talk. \nFunded by the MIT Association for Students Activities and the Greater Boston Humanists. \nOn the following Saturday afternoon\, we head out for a nature excursion walk through Alewife Brook Reservation\, to observe the local diversity of winter fauna.
