SUMMARY:Darwin’s Angels
DESCRIPTION:Darwin’s angels will decend in Wageningen. How do carnivorous plants and tiger spiders attack their preys? On this subject the single American woman Mary Treat corresponded with Charles Darwin\, the British inventor of the theory of evolution. Treat is one of special women in the 19th century who fought their way into the man-made scientific stronghold of science. She is one of the ten ‘angels’ central in Darwin Café 2019 in Wageningen\, tuesday evening 12 February from 8.30 pm in Café Rad van Wageningen.\nBotanical philosopher Norbert Peeters from Leiden\, co-author and compiler of the recently released book Darwins engelen\, gives a presentation about the learned women around Darwin in Dutch.\nDarwin Café is organized for the third year in a row by biologist newspaper Bionieuws\, Wageningen University magazine Resource and Stadsbrouwerij Wageningen. The freely accessible meeting (consumption compulsory) is on occasion of International Darwin Day\, the birthday of Charles Darwin. Registration: www.facebook.com/DarwinCafe

SUMMARY:Evolution and SHARKS!
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the birthday of Charles Darwin with the Baltimore Coalition of Reason! Join us for pizza and a lecture on evolution of the immune system by Dr. Helen Dooley of the University of Maryland. The talk description is below. \nWhen: Tuesday\, February 12\, 6:30 pm pizza\, 7:00 pm lecture\nWhere: Village Learning Place\, 2521 Saint Paul St.\, Baltimore\, MD 21218 \nMeetup: https://www.meetup.com/bmorethical/events/258367707/\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/766991143677291/ \nWe will order pizza for dinner at a suggested cost of $6 per person. Please RSVP if you would like to eat so we can order enough pizza. You can join the Meetup event\, or contact us by email at BmoreCoR@gmail.com\, or call us at 443-267-8585. \nChildcare \nChildcare will be provided on request. Please let us know by February 5 if you will be bringing children and we will arrange for a childcare provider. The lecture will be done by roughly 8:00 pm so reasonable weeknight bedtime is still possible. \nDirections and Parking \nThere is ample parking on Saint Paul St. with additional spaces in the lot directly across the street from the Village Learning Place at 2510 Saint Paul St. Directions are at \nhttps://www.villagelearningplace.org/our-story/directions/ \nTitle: What sharks are teaching us about the evolution of the immune system \nDescription: The aim of my work is to understand how the highly complex immune system found in humans came into being. Essential to this understanding are our studies on the immune system of sharks and their relatives\, the skates\, rays\, and chimera. As the most evolutionary distant species to have a ‘human-like’ immune system\, these provide important comparators. In this talk I’ll describe our work and what we are learning about the evolution of immune protection. \nSpeaker Bio: Dr. Helen Dooley is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) and serves on the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She earned her Ph.D. in Antibody Engineering at the University of Aberdeen (UK) in 2001. She is an immunologist and educator\, heading a research team studying immune evolution. \nLinks: \nDr. Helen Dooley’s pages: \nhttp://www.medschool.umaryland.edu/profiles/Dooley-Helen/\nhttps://imet.usmd.edu/directory/helen-dooley \nBaltimore Coalition of Reason \nhttp://BaltimoreCoR.org/

SUMMARY:Twice! Science and the Double Discovery of Evolution
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Charles Darwin Day 2019\, the Secular Society of MIT presents a special talk by Harvard University evolutionary biologist and science historian Andrew Berry. Dr Berry’s research combines the techniques of field biology with those of molecular biology to seek evidence at the DNA level of Darwinian natural selection. He has given lectures on evolutionary topics to popular audiences all over the world – from Ankara to the Antarctic – occasionally drawing the ire of creationists. \nAs an educator and popularizer\, he seeks to demystify the most important and most misinterpreted of all biological ideas: evolution. He will be speaking about the double discovery of evolution by natural selection by both Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace\, and what this incident tells us about how science works. \nWHEN: Tuesday\, FEB/12\, 6pm\nWHERE: 2-190 (1st Floor\, 182 Memorial Drive\, https://whereis.mit.edu/?go=2) \nFree entry. Darwin’s birthday party with cake\, beverages\, and evolution-themed games follows talk. \nFunded by the MIT Association for Students Activities and the Greater Boston Humanists. \nOn the following Saturday afternoon\, we head out for a nature excursion walk through Alewife Brook Reservation\, to observe the local diversity of winter fauna.

SUMMARY:The Multifaceted Outcomes of Charles Darwin Expeditions
DESCRIPTION:The PhD students Association in Pavia (ADP)\, Italy is proud to annouce the second Darwin Day held in Pavia. It will be exactly on 12th February 2019\, in Aula Foscolo\, at the central building of University of Pavia. \nWe will have the opportunity to discuss several implications of Charles Darwin research. From genetics\, to geology up to anthropology. We will be guided in this journey by Dr. Francesco Grossi\, geologists\, Dr. Angela Molinari\, anthropologist and Prof. Dr. Antonio Torroni\, geneticist and Professor at the Department of Biology and Biotechnology of University of Pavia. \n“Our idea – the local PhD student association says – is to give to the entire city\, not only the academic community\, the possibility to understand the various aspect of Charles Darwin work\, even the less known”. This event has been kindly supported by Commissione Permanente Studenti of University of Pavia within the program for the support of cultural activities organized by students.

Grosberg\, PhD\, Professor of Evolution and Ecology at UC Davis. \nDr. Grosberg’s research centers on major evolutionary transitions in the history of life\, as well as the impact of climate change and human activity on evolutionary dynamics. He received his BA in biology from the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, in 1976. In 1981\, he received a PhD in biology\, from Yale University. From 1996 to 2003\, he + one or more colleagues published six scholarly publications. SUMMARY:Central Colorado Celebrates Darwin Day 2019!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for birthday cake and ice cream as we celebrate the birth of Charles Darwin. We’ll then enjoy the PBS Nova film ‘Dawn of Humanity’: “Deep in a South African cave\, a special team of experts has brought to light an unprecedented wealth of fossils belonging to a crucial gap in the record of our origins that spans the transition between the ape-like australopithecines (such as the famous Lucy) and the earliest members of the human family. At the center of the discovery is paleoanthropologist Lee Berger\, a character brimming with enthusiasm and opinions\, whose claims have stirred long controversy in the contentious field of human origins. Join NOVA to solve a two million year-old “crime scene” and dig into extraordinary new clues about what made us human.” – https://shop.pbs.org/nova-dawn-of-humanity-dvd/product/NOVA6302
