SUMMARY:Pittsburgh CFI Celebrates Darwin Day
DESCRIPTION:As in our past Darwin’s birthday celebrations\, our presenter is the always interesting and knowledgeable Dr. Charles E. Jones\, of the Department of Geology and Planetary Science at the University of Pittsburgh. \nThe abstract for his talk is as follows:\nHe will introduce us to a variety of terrestrial vertebrates that lived and died in Pittsburgh some 75 million years before the earliest dinosaurs. Although not as famous as the dinosaurs\, they deserve our love because while some are entertainingly weird\, others are our direct ancestors. In addition\, coming only 30 million years after the very first vertebrates to walk on land\, the fossils around here preserve two key moments in our past: An evolutionary radiation out of lakes\, rivers\, and swamps into fully terrestrial habitats\, and the evolution of the world’s first herbivores. Thus\, although the animals were completely different\, the region’s rocks capture the beginnings of what we think of today as a fully developed terrestrial ecosystem. \nThis should prove to be quite an interesting talk. And as always when we are celebrating a birthday\, there will be cake for all who desire.

SUMMARY:Saturday\, Lecture February 21\, 2015 – The Scars of Human Evolution Time: 2:00 PM Location: Community College of Philadelphia\, Room W2-47	Details Speaker: Alan Mann
DESCRIPTION:Professor Alan Mann will discuss “The Scars of Evolution”\nEvolution results in function\, not perfection. A good example is the evolution of human upright posture. We have evolved from four legged ancestors with the ability to move using our rear limbs only\, leaving our front limbs free to carry and use objects. But our bipedality has also resulted in numerous problems associated with this evolu-tionary development\, including lower back problems and difficulty in giving birth.\nAlan Mann\, Professor Emeritus\, University of Pennsylvania\, Ph.D. University of California\, Berkeley 1968\, cur-rently Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University\, is a physical anthropologist whose interests include pa-leoanthropology and human evolution. He is the author of Some Paleodemographic Aspects of the South African Australopithecines and is the co-author (with Mark L. Weiss) of Human Biology and Behavior: An Anthropological Perspective. Professor Mann is also affiliated with Evolution at Princeton. Professor Mann teaches courses on hu-man adaptation and evolution and a summer field course on modern human origins in France.\n*** Note: This lecture will take place in Room W2-$47 in the West Building on the southwest corner of 17th & Spring Garden Streets.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Recognition--Humanists of Minnesota
DESCRIPTION:“Understanding Warfare: An Evolutionary Approach\,” Michael L. Wilson\, Associate Professor\, Department of Anthropology and Department of Ecology\, Evolution and Behavior\, University of Minnesota. Join us at our February chapter meeting to recognize and honor the legacy of Charles Darwin. Our guest speaker Michael Wilson is an Evolutionary Anthropologist who studies the behavior and ecology of primates to gain insights into the evolution of human behavior. He will discuss how an evolutionary perspective on warfare can help shed light on why people fight and what they can do to make war less likely to occur. Stay for a buffet lunch for further discussion with Prof. Wilson and fellow humanists.

SUMMARY:What Would Darwin Say to Today's Creationists?
DESCRIPTION:A Darwin Day talk for Glasgow Skeptics. \nMany elements of the modern American creationist movement would be familiar to Darwin\, especially the argument from design\, which of course was very well known (and well-regarded) by educated people of his time. Young-Earth creationism\, on the other hand\, would be puzzling to him; Bishop Ussher’s 4004 BC age of the Earth was not considered mainstream Christian theology in the late 19th century\, though certainly the view had its adherents among some clergy. Darwin might have heard of the “scriptural geologists” who promoted a young-Earth view during the 19th century\, but like other scientists of his time\, he would have ignored them. \nThe current creationist strategy of disclaiming evolution as weak science would have seemed more familiar to him\, given the criticisms of evolution he encountered during his own time. And of course\, having attended a fine Scottish university\, internationally renowned for its science\, Darwin would have followed closely the recent effort to prevent the teaching of creationism in school science classes. \nEugenie Scott\, a former university professor\, served as the executive director of the National Center for Science Education (NCSE) from 1987 to 2014; she now serves as the chair of NCSE’s Advisory Council. She has been both a researcher and an activist in the creationism/evolution controversy for over twenty-five years. \nShe has received national recognition for her NCSE activities\, including awards from scientific societies\, educational societies\, skeptics groups\, and humanist groups. She holds nine honorary degrees\, from McGill\, Rutgers\, Mt. Holyoke\, the University of New Mexico\, Ohio State\, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, Colorado College\, the University of Missouri-Columbia\, and Chapman University. \nA dynamic speaker\, she offers stimulating and thought-provoking as well as entertaining lectures and workshops. Scott is the author of Evolution vs Creationism and co-editor\, with Glenn Branch\, of “Not in Our Classrooms: Why Intelligent Design Is Wrong for Our Schools”. \nAccessibility: As per the policy of the Admiral Bar\, access to the venue “can only be provided to patrons who are sufficiently mobile and capable of independently evacuating premises\, or with the minimum of assistance.” Unfortunately\, this leaves the basement inaccessible to most wheelchair users. \nPhoto credit to Susan Gerbic.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day with Lee Dugatkin Sponsored by Anímo Leadership HS in Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Lecture & Birthday Celebration: Topic: “The Evolution of Goodness” February 16th. 6-7:30 pm\, Moffet Elementary School Cafeteria\n11050 Larch Avenue\, Lennox\, CA 90304 (Just N of 105\, Between Hawthorne & Prairie) Free Parking Traducción al español\nRSVP: Information & reservations: Science Dep’t: marklewisfriedman@gmail.com or call 310.216.3277\nProfessor & Distinguished University Scholar in the Department of Biology at the University of Louisville. His main area of research is the evolution of social behavior and the evolution of cooperation\, the evolution of aggression\, the interaction between genetic and cultural evolution\, the evolution of antibiotic resistance\, and the evolution of risk-taking behavior. Dr. Dugatkin has spoken at over 100 major universities world-wide. He is the author of 150 science articles and books including: Cooperation among Animals: An Evolutionary Perspective\, Cheating Monkeys and Citizen Bees\, The Altruism Equation: Seven Scientists Search for the Origins of Goodness\, Principles of Animal Behavior and Evolution.\n“In a world supposedly governed by ruthless survival of the fittest\, why do we see acts of goodness in both animals and humans? This problem plagued Charles Darwin in the 1850s as he developed his theory of evolution through natural selection. Indeed\, Darwin worried that the goodness he observed in nature could be the Achilles heel of his theory. Ever since then\, scientists and other thinkers have engaged in a fierce debate about the origins of goodness that has dragged politics\, philosophy\, and religion into what remains a major question for evolutionary biology.” Lee Dugatkin

SUMMARY:Omaha Metro Area Humanist Association (OMAHA) Darwin Day Event
DESCRIPTION:OMAHA will be hosting a special showing of the NOVA program “Darwin’s Darkest Hour” in celebration of Darwin Day. This the two-hour drama was produced for the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of his seminal work On the Origin of the Species. \nIn 1858 Charles Darwin received a letter from naturalist Alfred Wallace\, explaining his own theory of evolution. This was the trigger event that led to the publication of Darwin’s seminal theory on the origin of species. \nWe will provide coffee\, tea and popcorn\, and you are welcome to bring your own beverages and snacks if you prefer. Following the program everyone is invited to join us at a nearby eatery for dinner. The event is free and open to the public with RSVP to our meetup group. We hope to see you there.
