SUMMARY:Darwin Day Screening of "Inherit the Wind"
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Darwin’s birthday\, Feb. 12\, for a screening of “Inherit the Wind\,” Stanley Kramer’s classic film about the notorious 1925 Scope’s trial\, and discussion following with @Veronica Drantz. Based on a true story\, the film dramatized the trial of a Tennessee teacher accused of teaching evolution who was defended by Clarence Darrow\, with William Jennings Bryant for the prosecution. Darwin Day is celebrated around the world\, a day to “inspire people throughout the globe to reflect and act on the principles of intellectual bravery\, perpetual curiosity\, scientific thinking\, and hunger for truth as embodied in Charles Darwin.” All in great need today. If we don’t understand the world\, we won’t be able to change it. We will be joined by Veronica Drantz in discussion following the film. Veronica is a scientist who has been teaching medical professionals for 4 decades and\, as she put it\, someone who “flaunts her atheism” along with her insistence on a scientific approach. This event is free; we will pass the hat to keep Revolution Books open and growing.

SUMMARY:Bones\, Stones & DNA
DESCRIPTION:New perspectives on the Neanderthals \nby Dr. Bence Viola of the Max-Planck-Institute \nPublished in 1859\, Darwin’s “Origin of Species” started the largest paradigm change in the history of biology. Darwin understood the importance of his theory for the origin of humanity\, closing one of the last paragraphs of his book with the sentence “Light will be thrown on the origin of man and his history.”. This came true sooner than expected\, it was recognized in 1861 that bones found a few years before in the Neander Valley in Germany derived from an extinct human species\, now known as Neanderthals. \nNew fieldwork and methodological breakthroughs over the last years led to several major changes in our understanding of the Neanderthals. The discovery that they produced ornaments from bird claws and feathers shows that their behaviour was more similar to ours than we thought; and the sequencing of the Neanderthal genome revealed that all people outside of Africa still carry a small amount of Neanderthal DNA in them. These genes from the Neanderthals (and their sister group\, the Denisovans) were important – they allowed the modern humans immigrating into Eurasia to adapt to new pathogens and also to life at high altitudes in the Himalayas. In this talk\, I will briefly show how these discoveries changed not only how we see the Neanderthals\, but also ourselves. \n============= \nDr. Viola is a palaeoanthropologist trained at the universities of Bordeaux and Vienna\, and is currently a research fellow at the Max-Planck-Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. His research focuses on the biological and cultural interactions between various hominin groups in the Late Pleistocene using an interdisciplinary approach combining morphological\, archaeological and genetic data. He led excavations in Africa\, Europe and Central Asia.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Lecture 2015: What would Darwin say to today's creationists?
DESCRIPTION:The British Humanist Association presents the Darwin Day Lecture 2015\, chaired by Richard Dawkins. This year’s speaker will be Dr Eugenie Scott\, whose talk is entitled ‘What would Darwin say to today’s creationists?’ \nany elements of the modern American creationist movement would be familiar to Darwin\, especially the argument from design\, which of course was very well known (and well-regarded) by educated people of his time. Young Earth creationism\, on the other hand\, would puzzle him; Bishop Ussher’s 4004 BC age of the Earth was not considered mainstream Christian theology in the late 19th century\, though certainly the view had a few adherents among the clergy. \nDarwin might have heard of the ‘scriptural geologists’ who promoted a Young Earth view during the 19th century. But\, like other scientists of his time\, he would have ignored them. The current creationist strategy of disclaiming evolution as weak science would have seemed more familiar to him\, however\, given the criticisms of evolution he encountered during his own time. \nThe talk will be chaired by Professor Richard Dawkins\, with an introduction from BHA Chief Executive Andrew Copson. \nBefore the talk starts\, the BHA Choir will be performing the world premiere of a piece specifically written for us by Ian Assersohn and based on a quote by Darwin himself (the last few lines of Origin of Species). The piece is called From So Simple (‘From so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been\, and are being\, evolved’) which fits with the anniversary and theme of the lecture. \nDoors open at 19:00 for a 19:30 start. Tickets cost £15.00\, or £10.00 for BHA members. \nAbout Eugenie Scott\nDr Eugenie C Scott is the former Executive Director of the National Center for Science Education\, Inc.\, a not-for-profit membership organization of scientists\, teachers\, and others that works to improve the teaching of science as a way of knowing\, the teaching of evolution\, and the teaching of climate change. A former college professor\, Dr Scott is an internationally recognised expert on the creationism and evolution controversy\, and is called upon by the press and other media to explain science to the general public. The author of Evolution vs Creationism: An Introduction and co-editor with Glenn Branch of Not in Our Classrooms: Why Intelligent Design is Wrong for our Schools\, she is the recipient of numerous awards from scientists and educators\, and has been awarded nine honorary degrees. She is a lifetime member of the American Humanist Association\, and was awarded its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. \nAbout Richard Dawkins\nProfessor Richard Dawkins is a renowned British ethologist\, evolutionary biologist\, and author. He is an emeritus fellow of New College\, Oxford\, and was the University of Oxford’s Professor for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 until 2008. His popular science books include The Selfish Gene (1976)\, The Extended Phenotype (1982)\, The Blind Watchmaker (1986)\, and The God Delusion (2006)\, and he is aso a Vice President of the British Humanist Association.

SUMMARY:Is being ethical is evolutionarily beneficial? Darwin Day philosophically.
\nZapraszamy do dyskusji\,\nFilozoficzny Klub Dyskusyjny
