SUMMARY:Darwin\, Anthropology and Human Ethology. Lecture of Prof. Dr. Wulf SCHIEFENHÖVEL @ Science Cafe Eureka!
DESCRIPTION:«Darwin’s third book “The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals” (1872) is revolutionary in many ways. He uses a phylogenetic\, cross-species approach to elucidate the similarity between animals and humans. Only in recent years\, authors like William McGrew and Frans de Waal have\, in their work on non-human primates\, done the same. For a long time ethologists had shied way from what was thought to be unscientific anthropomorphism. Comparative ethology is thus one of the new approaches the wise man in his house south of London initiated. Darwin also conducted one of the world’s earliest\, perhaps the earliest\, international cross-\ncultural questionnaire studies by sending letters to Bristish colonial officers\, missionaries\, traders etc. asking them how the local people in the remote areas of the world where they were stationed expressed nonverbal “yes”\, “no” and some basic emotions. Also his collecting data concerning the facial expressions of children born blind opened a new experimental field of evolutionary anthropology. Human ethology\, as the evolutionary study of human perception\, emotion\, thought and behaviour is indebted to the great man in many ways\, especially for collecting behavioural data in real life situations. I will compare his findings with my own fieldwork in New Guinea.» – Wulf SCHIEFENHÖVEL

SUMMARY:Wallace and Darwin: Inspiration\, Legacy\, and the Origins of Evolutionary Theory A Conversation Between James T. Costa and Daniel Duzdevich
DESCRIPTION:Charles Darwin was far from the first to suggest that species change with time. And he was not the only one to propose natural selection as the mechanism of species change. Alfred Russel Wallace\, Darwin’s sometime rival\, friend\, and colleague\, had the same idea during a feverish fit while on an expedition to southeast Asia. The manuscript Wallace fatefully sent to Darwin describing his revolutionary thoughts spurred the elder naturalist to go public. Their papers were read at the Linnean Society of London on July 1\, 1858\, immediately after which Darwin hastened to complete the watershed work that would become On the Origin of Species. This conversation will explore Wallace’s life\, his remarkable scientific contributions\, and his fascinating personal and intellectual relationship with Darwin. \nJames T. Costa is Director of the Highlands Biological Station and Professor of Biology at Western Carolina University. His fieldwork and scholarship range from social evolution and behavior to the history of evolutionary thinking. He is the author of The Annotated Origin: A Facsimile of the First Edition of On the Origin of Species (Harvard\, 2009)\, On the Organic Law of Change: A Facsimile Edition and Annotated Transcription of Alfred Russel Wallace’s ‘Species Notebook’ of 1855–1859 (Harvard\, 2013)\, and most recently of Wallace\, Darwin\, and the Origin of Species (Harvard\, 2014). \nDaniel Duzdevich is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University\, where he studies the interactions between DNA and proteins at the scale of individual molecules. He is the author of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species: A Modern Rendition (Indiana\, 2014).

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Potluck and Dr. Andrew Thomson on "Why We Believe In God(s)"
DESCRIPTION:Our February meeting will be on Sunday\, February 8 from 6 to 8 pm in the Sanctuary/Commons. We will start with a potluck dinner to be followed by a talk by J. Anderson Thomson\, Jr.\, M.D.\, on “Why We Believe In God(s).” Dr. Thomson is a psychiatrist in private practice in Charlottesville\, Virginia. He is also a staff psychiatrist at Counseling and Psychological Services at the University of Virginia Student Health Services and the Institute of Law\, Psychiatry and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. In addition\, Dr. Thomson is the Treasurer of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science. \nPresident Obama could hold a press conference and say\, “My fellow Americans\, I am pleased to announce that scientists\, including many of ours\, have unraveled the mystery of why human minds manufacture gods and believe in them. Some of the crucial work was even done at our National Institutes of Health. We can now dispense with all these dangerous\, stem cell opposing and terrorism inspiring beliefs. We and our fellow citizens of the world can now be who we are\, seven billion humans descended from a small group of hunter gatherers who lived in Africa seven hundred centuries ago.” \nFew people realize that cognitive neuroscience has mapped out how and why human minds produce\, accept and spread religious beliefs. This knowledge is available\, accessible\, and should be a required part of a 21st century education. This presentation will review the basic mechanisms human minds use to generate and sustain religious beliefs as well as the neurobiology of the rituals that reinforce them. There is a massive\, irreconcilable conflict between science and theistic religion. Religion was humanity’s original cosmology\, biology and anthropology. It provided explanations for the origin of the world\, life and humans. Science now gives us increasingly complete explanations for those big three. And\, science now gives us the anatomy of religious belief. \n For the potluck dinner\, please bring something to share. Suggestions: casseroles with a card explaining ingredients\, rice\, potatoes\, vegetable dishes\, bread\, fruit or dessert. Each dish should have enough for 8 – 10 people. Bring whatever YOU would like to drink.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day with Dr. Austin Hitt: Origin of Species Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly meeting as we celebrate Darwin Day with a special talk by Dr. Austin Hitt! \nThe Origin of Species Then and Now\nCharles Darwin’s Origin of Species (1859) is one of the most discussed and controversial books of all time. Scientists celebrate the Origin as the start of biology as a science. Critics view the Origin as a materialistic book that undermines the moral fabric of society. The jubilation and the rancor elicited by the Origin continues today over 200 hundred years later. What makes the Origin phenomenon even more interesting is how few people\, scientists and laypersons alike\, have actually read the book. This talk focuses on clarifying what Darwin thought about evolution\, explains the relevancy of his ideas for modern biology and discusses how his core theories have been amended in order to reflect our current understanding of how life on earth evolves. \nAbout our speaker: Dr. Austin Hitt is an Associate Professor of Science Education at Coastal Carolina University. He is also a former high school science teacher and has earned a B.S. in Biology from the University of West Florida\, M.S. in Zoology and Wildlife Science from Auburn University\, a M.Ed. in Biology Education from the University of West Florida and a Ph.D. in Science Education from Indiana University. Dr. Hitt’s current research focuses on teaching science for conceptual understanding and investigating how college students conceptualize and explain the components of evolutionary theory

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Relationships (Sunday Assembly Columbus)
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year! Love is in the air\, and that means Darwin Day is right around the corner (we love him\, don’t you?)! Join us to celebrate the new year! \nCoffee and baked goods will be provided\, and join us at Cazuela’s Grill across the street for lunch! \nBring a date\, or just bring yourself. There’s plenty of love to go around\, but not in a weird way… \n——————————————————————————- \nAbout our guest speaker: \nThe Evolution of Relationships: How I Learned to Have Better Relationships\, One Mistake at a Time. \nSusan Porter will talk to us about all the mistakes she has made\, pitfalls she has taken with Olympic “10” nose dives and why the trick to forming long lasting\, healthy relationships means being willing to make mistakes and more importantly\, being willing to learn from those mistakes. (It doesn’t hurt to acknowledge that relationships are the ULTIMATE GROUP PROJECT.) \nSusan has experience being in both monogamous relationships and polyamorous relationships and thinks the only advantage polyamorous people have over monogamous people is the the chance to make exponentially more mistakes more often! \nThe event image included here is property of its respective owner(s) (Retrieved from: https://principleintopractice.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/evo_love.jpg).

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Scavenger Hunt for Families at The Smithsonian Natural Museum In Washington DC (Event on Saturday February 7th)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our 2nd Annual Darwin themed scavenger hunt at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Our event will begin with an Impromptu meet and greet\, then together we will make our very own Charles Darwin beard (simple fun craft) to wear throughout the museum…And then following instructions for our group Scavenger Hunt. Finally\, we will end with a celebratory desert in Darwin’s honor (cake and party favors included!) Imagine that! \nPlease wear your Camp Quest T-Shirt or funny Darwin T-shirt! \nThis Darwin Day will be celebrated by the GLOBAL community as a toast to the common good of all humanity. We will all want to develop events to Celebrate Darwin\, Science and Humanity and come together as one human family in appreciation of verifiable knowledge that has been acquired solely through human curiosity and ingenuity. Scientific knowledge has been of great value to all of us. It is our hope that the Celebration of Science and Humanity will be so well established that DURING THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR we will all want to continue to work to make February the 12th a International day to recognize Verifiable Scientific Knowledge and to appreciate the connection of Humankind to the acquisition of this knowledge. \n** Please note ** This is not a Smithsonian Sponsored event. This event is hosted by The Gilmore Family and Camp Quest Chesapeake (Campquest.org) Campers and Counselors. This is a free event and open to everyone! If you wish to join us\, please visit our Facebook page (Please like us for updates!) and message us for more information on location meet-up and instructions for Scavenger Hunt. Because the Museum is extremely busy on Saturdays\, it’s extremely important that we have a head count of everyone attending. We look forward to meeting new faces and seeing CQ friends again!

SUMMARY:A Brief Review of the Formation and Evolution of Earth and Its Life:
DESCRIPTION:Darwin Day Lecture and Exhibition \nOrigin of Species is one of the most influential books ever written. In it\, Darwin gave us a scientific understanding of our origins to replace those based on ancient myths. In commemoration of Darwin’s birthday\, Professor Katryn Wiese will review the main timeline and evidence for Earth’s formation and evolution\, including the evolution of life on Earth. Following this review\, she will lead a tour of the 4-story Science Hall exhibit\, The Story of Time and Life. \nWhen\, in 2003\, the California Academy of Sciences closed its doors to begin construction on their new facility\, the Earth Sciences Department at City College worked with Academy curators to save as much as possible of the remains of the Life Through Time exhibit. These saved and borrowed items included panels\, murals\, dinosaur fossils\, rock samples\, and scale models. Around these Academy-donated and -loaned items\, the Earth Sciences Department designed a 4-floor exhibit\, augmenting the materials to install a complete and permanent (and publicly available) exhibit on the Story of Time and Life — from the Big Bang to Humans.\nExhibit website: http://www.ccsf.edu/Departments/History_of_Time_and_Life/ \nKatryn is Professor of Geology & Oceanography\, Earth Sciences Department\, City College of San Francisco (www.ccsf.edu/earth) \nWHERE: City College of SF\, Ocean Campus\, Science Hall\, Room 34. 50 Phelan Ave. Convenient parking is available for $3; passes are sold from the machines in the lots. BART and Muni J Line stops nearby (Balboa Park station). More detailed directions and maps: http://www.ccsf.edu/en/educational-programs/school-and-departments/school-of-science-and-mathematics/earth-sciences/Map.html \nEveryone is welcome.
