SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:In a celebration of scientific curiosity and the contributions of biologists\, Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Biology is set to celebrate Darwin Day Feb. 12 with special guest speaker Dr. David Hillis from The University of Texas at Austin. \n \nEmbracing the spirit of inquiry that defines Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking contributions to evolutionary theory\, Hillis will give his talk on Darwin’s “Tree of Life” hypothesis. \nHillis is the Alfred W. Roark Centennial Professor in Natural Sciences at UT Austin\, where he studies molecular evolution and biodiversity in the Department of Integrative Biology. He is the director of UT Austin’s Biodiversity Center and also directs the Dean’s Scholars Program of the College of Natural Sciences. \n“We are delighted to have Dr. Hillis on the SFA campus to speak at this special event as we gather together to celebrate\, remember and reflect on not only the contributions of Darwin but also the contributions of many scientists in general\,” said Dr. Carmen Montaña\, assistant professor of biology. \nHillis’ research is focused on the tree of life and how we can use it to understand processes of evolution. He is one of the foremost evolutionary biologists today investigating the evolutionary relationships among living organisms. His work has helped the study of the evolutionary development of a species or a group of organisms throughout most fields of molecular biology in recent years\, from studies of the epidemiology of human immunodeficiency viruses to studies of the origin of life. \nHillis’ research appears in over 200 scientific publications\, and he has authored numerous books\, including his most recent: “Armadillos to Ziziphus: A Naturalist in the Texas Hill Country.” In recognition of his contributions to evolutionary biology\, he has received many honors\, including being elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as the National Academy of Sciences. He has served as president of the Society for the Study of Evolution and the Society of Systematic Biologists. \nHillis will give his featured talk\, “Applications of the Great Tree of Life\,” from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Miller Science Building\, Room 139\, on the SFA campus.

SUMMARY:Heroes of Evolution Darwin Day Talk: Francis Arnold — When Engineering Meets Evolution
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Presentation in Second Life\nLong gone are the days of dustry textbooks filled with examples of evolution seeking to capture the hows and whys of species came to be on the planet. Modern biology is progressing forward MAKING evolution happen. Genes and whole organisms are made to be evolved in a flask or test tube and modern computational methods can both guide and explain the complexity that is happening. \nThe primary revolutionary in this change was the scientist Francis Arnold. In her seminal work she adapted an enzyme that worked well in an aqueous environment to work well in an organic solvent by creating mutations\, picking the best working ones\, and mutating those\, and repeating the process. This is a technique called directed evolution and has found its way into engineering in many sectors from agriculture\, pharmaceuticals\, environmental remediation\, and chemical synthesis just to name a few. \nFor this seminal contribution she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018. \nCome to this Darwin Day talk in which we celebrate the professional achievements of Francis Arnold and have an introduction to the world of directed evolution and synthetic biology. \nBy Dr. Stephen L. Gasior

SUMMARY:Wellcome Sanger Institute’s Mark Blaxter on Sequencing All of Earth’s Species—NYU’s Darwin Lecture\, Feb. 12
DESCRIPTION:Lecture centers on the “endless forms” in Darwin’s “On the Origin of Species” \n\n\n\n\n\nNew York University will host evolutionary genomics researcher Mark Blaxter for “Sequencing Endless Forms\, Most Beautiful and Most Wonderful: The Earth Biogenome Project\,” its annual Darwin Lecture\, on Mon.\, Feb. 12\, 4 p.m.\, at NYU’s Center for Genomics and Systems Biology auditorium (12 Waverly Place [at Mercer Street]). \nBlaxter leads the Wellcome Sanger Institute’s Tree of Life Program\, which aims to sequence all of Earth’s species—linked through the common thread of DNA. His lecture will consider how determining the DNA sequences of all species on Earth will enable us to both understand Darwin’s “endless forms”—as famously conveyed in On the Origin of Species—and promote their conservation. \nThis event will be both on Zoom and in-person. To receive a webinar link and to RSVP for in-person attendance\, please visit the event’s registration page. \nBefore joining the Wellcome Sanger Institute\, Blaxter was a professor of evolutionary genomics at the University of Edinburgh\, where his research portfolio focused on the genomics of neglected\, non-model organisms and the interpretation of those genomes in ecological and evolutionary contexts. Blaxter\, a highly cited author with over 250 refereed papers\, is a fellow of the Linnaean Society of London\, the Helminthological Society of Washington\, the Royal Society for Biology\, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. \nFor questions about the lecture\, sponsored by NYU’s Dean for Science and Department of Biology\, please email biology@nyu.edu. \nSubways: 6 (Astor Place); R\, W (8th Street)
