SUMMARY:2024 Darwin Day with NABT & NCSE
DESCRIPTION:Sixty-six million years ago\, “an asteroid some seven miles across slammed into the Earth\, leaving a geologic wound over 50 miles in diameter.” Approximately 75% of known species vanished. Yet many life forms managed to survive the catastrophe\, from feathered dinosaurs to our primate ancestors. \nJoin us for a special encore presentation of the popular “Road to Extinction” Evolution Symposium that was presented at the 2023 NABT Conference in Baltimore. The webinar will feature Riley Black\, the award-winning author of The Last Days of the Dinosaurs\, who will replay what made the difference between survival and extinction as the Age of Dinosaurs ended and the Age of Mammals began. \nNABT will be using Zoom Webinar for this event and login instructions will be sent via email from conference@nabt.org. 7:00PM – 8:00PM ET (6:00PM CT / 5:00PM MT / 4:00PM PT). Please register on-line!

SUMMARY:Science in the Virtual Pub - Darwin Days
DESCRIPTION:Join the Paleontological Research Institution virtually for Science in the Virtual Pub to celebrate Darwin Days. \nThe talk\, the Late Devonian Mass Extinction: the view from New York\, will be given by Andrew Bush\, Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences and Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut. \nIf we didn’t have fossils\, we wouldn’t know much about extinction: fossils were key evidence in convincing scientists that species actually do go extinct and that many species go extinct at the same time during global catastrophes. As we approach the “Sixth Mass Extinction”\, what else can fossils tell us? I’ll talk about lessons from the Late Devonian mass extinction in New York and northern Pennsylvania\, with a focus on animals living in shallow marine habitats. Why did some species live and others die\, and what happened to the survivors after the extinction?
