Meanwhile\, what children learn in classrooms and in libraries is also under hostile scrutiny. This talk will bring together the subjects of Darwin and education. Through a survey of recent British and American books for young readers\, many of them illustrated\, we will consider what authors are teaching children about Darwin’s life\, voyages\, discoveries\, theories and\, more generally\, about the role of science in the past and present. \nWednesday February 15\, 2023 Morris Library 4:30 PM\nPop Goes the Beagle: Darwin for Children\nMargaret Stetz\nMae & Robert Carter Professor Women and Gender Studies; and\, Professor of Humanities University of Delaware\nScience is increasingly being politicized and scientists themselves demonized. DESCRIPTION:The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences is set to host its 11th annual Darwin Day on Thursday\, Feb. 16. \nEvolutionary biologist and co-author of “Mean Genes” and “The Secret Syllabus: A guide to the unwritten rules of college success\,” Jay Phelan\, Ph.D.\, will be the keynote lecturer of the evening. Phelan’s lecture\, “Why do we want (and do) so many things that are bad for us? A Darwinian perspective on behavior can improve our lives\,” will touch on a variety of topics\, including the imperfections of natural selection\, human nature\, why it is difficult to quit drugs and more. \n \nAttendees will be able to take part in a public poster session highlighting current research. Phelan\, faculty member of the UCLA Life Sciences Core Program\, will host a book-signing after the lecture and will meet and greet attendees. The poster session and reception will begin at 5 p.m. Phelan’s lecture will begin at 6 p.m.\, with the book-signing taking place from 7–8 p.m. \n\n\nTo learn more about events and opportunities from the Department of Biology\, click here. \n\n\nDarwin Day is an annual celebration recognized internationally in honor of the birthday and legacy of the historically renowned biologist Charles Darwin\, commemorating his contributions to modern science and society. UAB’s Darwin Day celebrates the advancement of science\, education and human well-being.

SUMMARY:Enseñando evolución a través del juego/Teaching evolution through play
\nCaminante de Montes in collaboration with UK School\, will celebrate Darwin Day with a teacher professional development workshop about the importance of teaching the theory of evolution and strategies to work on this topic with high school students. This workshop is aimed at all teachers who seek to improve their professional practice and better understand how to approach a subject of great technical and sociocultural complexity\, such as evolution. \nThe workshop will be conducted by Adrián Soria\, biologist and specialist in socio-environmental studies; also science communicator of the teaching of evolution in Ecuador\, and Heny Ágredo\, educator specialist in bilingual education and teacher professional development.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day 2023: Collezioni\, Tassonomia\, Evoluzione
