SUMMARY:VIAGGIO DI UN NATURALISTA INTORNO AL MONDO
DESCRIPTION:February is the month dedicated to Darwin to celebrate his birth\, but it is also the month of the birth of Pietro Doderlein\, the first Professor engaged for the first course of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy of the University of Palermo\, and founder of the Museum of Zoology.\nDarwin Day\, the international event dedicated to the English naturalist who has revolutionized the thinking of the biological sciences\, assumes\, as a consequence\, a double value within the collections of the Museum. Inspired by Darwin’s principles\, the purpose of the exhibition is not only to draw the explorations and travels of Darwin on the Beagle\, but also to review it from a different point of view from what we are used to; in fact\, the thousands of different specimens collected by Pietro Doderlein\, more than 150 years ago\, will be the unusual guides in the Museum of Zoology of the University Museum System of the University of Palermo.

SUMMARY:Darwin's Week
DESCRIPTION:Darwin’s Week at NSU is a popular science marathon about the origin of everything in the world for schoolchildren as well as the general public. Every day one can visit a lecture and have an opportunity to ask the speaker questions. Lectures at the first Darwin Week were devoted to the origin of the Universe\, the Earth\, life\, man\, language\, family and species.\nThe speakers at the Week are faculty members and scientists from NSU. They are specialists who can share with listeners the latest and most reliable information. Darwin Week lectures are about something that is not yet in the books and will only get there in a few years.\nDarwin Week at NSU is timed to overlap with the Day of Darwin\, which is celebrated all over the world on February 12.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day at the Gray Fossil Site
DESCRIPTION:JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 30\, 2018) – On Saturday\, Feb. 17\, the Gray Fossil Site and Museum will celebrate the life and times of Charles Darwin by taking part in Darwin Day\, an international observation of the 209th birthday of the famous naturalist. \nThe day will highlight Darwin’s unique contributions to science through fun activities\, demonstrations and a talk of interest to all ages. \n“Even today\, over a century after his death\, Charles Darwin is admired worldwide for his insatiable scientific curiosity and insight into nature\,” said Gray Fossil Site paleontologist Dr. Chris Widga. “Few 19th century naturalists contributed so much to so many disciplines.” \nFrom 10 a.m.-4 p.m.\, participants may see fossils up close and take part in family-friendly activities. Admission will be discounted to $3 for adults and children age 3 and up for the event. \nGray Fossil Site paleontologists will demonstrate 3-D scanning and printing of fossils from the museum’s collections and exhibits. A craft table and scavenger hunt for children age 2 and up are also planned. \n“Darwin\, Extinct Megafauna and Underwater Caves of the Yucatán” is the focus of a talk to be given at 11 a.m. by Dr. Blaine W. Schubert\, executive director of the Center of Excellence in Paleontology at East Tennessee State University. \nIn this presentation\, Schubert will link Darwin’s discoveries to the current understanding of why animals exist in certain areas today. He will also address the extinction of large mammals in the Americas at the end of the last Ice Age and how new fossil discoveries in underwater caves of the Yucatán are revolutionizing science’s understanding of Ice Age ecosystems that existed between North and South America. \nThe Gray Fossil Site is a 5-million-year-old paleontological site containing the fossil remains of thousands of plants and animals. The site was originally discovered in 2000 during highway construction. Then-Tennessee Gov. Don Sundquist ordered that the site be protected\, and in 2007\, a museum and research center managed by ETSU opened. \nSince that time\, the Gray Fossil Site and Museum has been dedicated to scientific discovery\, paleontological research and education in southern Appalachia. In 2016\, the Gray Fossil Site and Museum entered into a collaborative agreement with the Hands On! Regional Museum\, which began managing educational programming and exhibits. \nTo learn more\, visit http://gfsm.handsonmuseum.org.
