SUMMARY:Celebration of Darwin Day in the Galapagos Islands
DESCRIPTION:Metropolitan Touring Ecuador celebrates Darwin Day in the Galapagos Islands on board her fleet of expedition vessels MV Santa Cruz II\, Yacht La Pinta\, and Yacht Isabela II. Throughout the weekend a series of lectures and land visits to areas Charles Darwin explored in the Galapagos will be arranged by our team of Expedition Leaders. Guests from all over the world will get a chance to have a deeper understanding in how Galapagos influenced Charles Darwin’s thinking\, but also to reflect in why Charles Darwin is one of the most positive drivers of modern thinking in humanity. Bravery redefined!

SUMMARY:Evolution Explored
DESCRIPTION:A new outdoor exhibition of 40 images by Magnum photographers will explore Charles Darwin’s legacy in modern society. Inspired by Darwin’s links to Shrewsbury\, the exhibition reflects on man’s progression through technology\, changes in society\, environmental concerns\, scientific discoveries\, and the historical events which have shaped the world we live in today. \nTraversing the globe from Australia to Brooklyn via Malaysia\, the exhibition includes a diverse selection of photographs from the seed vault in Svalbard by Jonas Bendiksen\, Longleat Safari Park by Martin Parr\, to the Horniman Museum and the protests in Tiananmen Square by Stuart Franklin. Other photographers included in the exhibition are Trent Parke\, Philip Jones Griffiths\, Elliott Erwitt\, Peter Marlow\, Alex Webb\, Rene Burri\, and Robert Capa – examining man’s place in the ever changing world. \nCharles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury in 1809 and published his landmark On the Origin of the Species in 1859. His theory of evolution by natural selection led to a rethinking of human’s place in the world – the idea that humans shared ancestry with apes was a challenge to the foundations of western civilisation. Evolution Explored will coincide with International Darwin Day\, and Darwin’s birthday on 12 February. \nThe exhibition is a collaboration between Shrewsbury Business Improvement District (BID)\, The Hive Arts Centre\, GRAIN Photography Hub and partners. In association with the exhibition\, there will be a series of activities including a Photo Safari and a Magnum Photos Talk. For further information visit www.hiveonline.org.uk and www.grainphotographyhub.co.cuk \nThe ten-week exhibition also links to Magnum Photos’ 70th anniversary which is to be marked by a series of international events\, projects and partnerships. \n“We are delighted to be collaborating on this outdoor exhibition\, looking at Magnum’s archive through the prism of evolution. As Magnum moves into its 70th year\, it is a timely concept as we reflect on our own history and evolution. The exhibition will display powerful historic and contemporary photographs exploring Darwin’s legacy in modern society\,” said Emily Graham\, Cultural Commissions & Partnerships at Magnum Photos. \nTrish Donovan\, Shrewsbury BID Board Member\, said: “Charles Darwin was born and raised in Shrewsbury. The town is rightly proud of this special connection to the man who became one of the most important figures in history with his theory of evolution by natural selection. It’s a unique event for the town to experience such renowned work and we expect it to attract thousands of visitors.” \nSalla Virman\, Director for the Hive\, added: “This is an exciting and inspirational arts project looking at evolution through the eyes of some of the most influential photographers around. ‘Evolution Explored’ will celebrate the link between Charles Darwin and Shrewsbury but also give everyone the opportunity to enjoy high quality art in an accessible way. We would like to thank Arts Council England for their support to make the project possible and sponsors Redrow Homes\, Shrewsbury Shopping and Shrewsbury Colleges Group.”

SUMMARY:2017 SSM Darwin Week – College of Charleston: “Astrobiology and Evolution”
DESCRIPTION:Astrobiology and Evolution\nChris Bennett\nUniversity of Central Florida \nAstrobiology is an incredibly interdisciplinary field which focuses on attempting to understand how we think life may have evolved on Earth\, how life has adapted to some of the most extreme environments\, what are the limits that life as we know it could potentially thrive on the Earth (to assess what we may mean by habitability)\, and where else in the solar system or universe may provide an environment that is thought to be conducive to life. We will cover these topics as well as: i) what we know looking backwards in time beyond the evolutionary derived last common ancestor\, and review some of the earliest signatures of life on Earth\, ii) what is known about the conditions of the primordial earth and solar system during the Hadean era\, and the potential for the production and evolution of biomolecules and polymers necessary for life to evolve in this period (i.e. could these biomolecules be produced sufficiently by endogenous production schemes on Earth or delivered exogenously via influx from the asteroid or cometary populations)\, iii) how these consequences might influence where to look for life elsewhere in the solar system and beyond (i.e. would we expect life elsewhere to evolve in a similar way\, or is the Earth somehow ‘special’?)\, and iv) how space agencies are utilizing space missions and craft to discover Earth-like exoplanets and explore habitable worlds within our solar system to search for life (e.g.\, at Jupiter’s moon Europa\, or Saturn’s moons Enceladus and Titan)\, and finally\, v) what are the prospects for finding life in the Universe?

SUMMARY:2017 SSM Darwin Week – College of Charleston: “Darwin’s Dilemma”
DESCRIPTION:Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecture:\nDarwin’s Dilemma \nPhil Manning\nCollege of Charleston\nMace Brown Museum of Natural History \nhttp://geology.cofc.edu/about/faculty-and-staff/manning-phillip.php \n	In 2009 the bicentenary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of Origin of Species was globally celebrated. These milestones reminded us of aspects of Darwin’s work that\, despite the passage of time\, are yet in need of investigation. “Darwin’s Dilemma” refers to the evolutionary paradox of the sudden appearance of complex life in sedimentary rocks at the base of the Cambrian – the Cambrian Explosion\, with apparently no evidence of earlier animals when Charles Darwin wrote ‘On the Origin of the Species’. Darwin considered this a major problem for his theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin devoted much of a chapter within his famous book to his inability to point to any evidence for life in the long Dark-Age of Precambrian rocks. ‘”There is another and allied difficulty\, which is much graver. I allude to the manner in which the numbers of species of the same group suddenly appear in the lowest known fossiliferous rocks?” (Darwin\, 1859; p. 306). He then went so far as to say: “The case at present must remain inexplicable; and may be truly urged as a valid argument against my views here entertained.” This was Darwin’s Dilemma. Darwin also saw a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel\, which was to turn into an ample prophecy: “Traces of life have been detected in the Longmynd beds beneath the primordial [Cambrian] zone.” (Darwin 1859\, p. 307). We now know that such ‘traces of life’ include the Ediacaran fauna that can be traced from Longmynd and Charnwood in England\, to Newfoundland\, Canada where some of the very best and oldest examples of this fauna have been found\, at Mistaken Point in rocks of latest Precambrian (Ediacaran) age. The discovery of ancient complex life that predates the Cambrian Explosion has started to answer many of the questions that Darwin strove to answer. These fossil ‘organisms’ bear witness to the previously hidden evolutionary history of early life that we might wryly call ‘Darwin’s deliverance’. However\, questions as to the identity\, biology and ecology of these ancient\, Ediacaran lifeforms continues to perplex science in the 21st Century. A significant breakthrough is now occurring in this most ancient of these large complex lifeforms using techniques borrowed from the world of particle and accelerator physics. The 565 million year old fossils of Mistaken Point from the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland in Canada might finally offer new evidence that might enable us to interpret the oldest and largest complex life on the planet.

SUMMARY:Human evolution\, critical thinking and the concept of self - Dr. Chris diCarlo
DESCRIPTION:We welcome back Dr. Chris DiCarlo to elaborate on why\, in his opinion\, humans evolved along such a different path to the rest of life on the planet. The human brain is the product of millions of years of evolution. Through a process of natural selection\, Darwinian forces have acted on the brain to produce a highly complex organ. Hard-wired patterns of behaviour selected millions of years ago remain today. This is the gist of evolutionary psychology\, a discipline founded in the latter part of the 20th century which helps explain our success. \nThe intellectual roots of critical thinking are as ancient as its etymology\, traceable\, ultimately\, to the teaching practice and vision of Socrates 2\,500 years ago who discovered by a method of probing questioning that people could not rationally justify their confident claims to knowledge. Confused meanings\, inadequate evidence\, or self-contradictory beliefs often lurked beneath smooth but largely empty rhetoric. Socrates established the fact that one cannot depend upon those in “authority” to have sound knowledge and insight. He demonstrated that persons may have power and high position and yet be deeply confused and irrational. He established the importance of asking deep questions that probe profoundly into thinking before we accept ideas as worthy of belief.
