SUMMARY:Celebration of Darwin Day in the Galapagos Islands
DESCRIPTION:Metropolitan Touring Ecuador celebrates Darwin Day in the Galapagos Islands on board her fleet of expedition vessels MV Santa Cruz II\, Yacht La Pinta\, and Yacht Isabela II. Throughout the weekend a series of lectures and land visits to areas Charles Darwin explored in the Galapagos will be arranged by our team of Expedition Leaders. Guests from all over the world will get a chance to have a deeper understanding in how Galapagos influenced Charles Darwin’s thinking\, but also to reflect in why Charles Darwin is one of the most positive drivers of modern thinking in humanity. Bravery redefined!

SUMMARY:Evolution Explored
DESCRIPTION:A new outdoor exhibition of 40 images by Magnum photographers will explore Charles Darwin’s legacy in modern society. Inspired by Darwin’s links to Shrewsbury\, the exhibition reflects on man’s progression through technology\, changes in society\, environmental concerns\, scientific discoveries\, and the historical events which have shaped the world we live in today. \nTraversing the globe from Australia to Brooklyn via Malaysia\, the exhibition includes a diverse selection of photographs from the seed vault in Svalbard by Jonas Bendiksen\, Longleat Safari Park by Martin Parr\, to the Horniman Museum and the protests in Tiananmen Square by Stuart Franklin. Other photographers included in the exhibition are Trent Parke\, Philip Jones Griffiths\, Elliott Erwitt\, Peter Marlow\, Alex Webb\, Rene Burri\, and Robert Capa – examining man’s place in the ever changing world. \nCharles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury in 1809 and published his landmark On the Origin of the Species in 1859. His theory of evolution by natural selection led to a rethinking of human’s place in the world – the idea that humans shared ancestry with apes was a challenge to the foundations of western civilisation. Evolution Explored will coincide with International Darwin Day\, and Darwin’s birthday on 12 February. \nThe exhibition is a collaboration between Shrewsbury Business Improvement District (BID)\, The Hive Arts Centre\, GRAIN Photography Hub and partners. In association with the exhibition\, there will be a series of activities including a Photo Safari and a Magnum Photos Talk. For further information visit www.hiveonline.org.uk and www.grainphotographyhub.co.cuk \nThe ten-week exhibition also links to Magnum Photos’ 70th anniversary which is to be marked by a series of international events\, projects and partnerships. \n“We are delighted to be collaborating on this outdoor exhibition\, looking at Magnum’s archive through the prism of evolution. As Magnum moves into its 70th year\, it is a timely concept as we reflect on our own history and evolution. The exhibition will display powerful historic and contemporary photographs exploring Darwin’s legacy in modern society\,” said Emily Graham\, Cultural Commissions & Partnerships at Magnum Photos. \nTrish Donovan\, Shrewsbury BID Board Member\, said: “Charles Darwin was born and raised in Shrewsbury. The town is rightly proud of this special connection to the man who became one of the most important figures in history with his theory of evolution by natural selection. It’s a unique event for the town to experience such renowned work and we expect it to attract thousands of visitors.” \nSalla Virman\, Director for the Hive\, added: “This is an exciting and inspirational arts project looking at evolution through the eyes of some of the most influential photographers around. ‘Evolution Explored’ will celebrate the link between Charles Darwin and Shrewsbury but also give everyone the opportunity to enjoy high quality art in an accessible way. We would like to thank Arts Council England for their support to make the project possible and sponsors Redrow Homes\, Shrewsbury Shopping and Shrewsbury Colleges Group.”

We will all want to develop events to Celebrate Darwin\, Science and Humanity and come together as one human family in appreciation of verifiable knowledge that has been acquired solely through human curiosity and ingenuity. Scientific knowledge has been of great value to all of us. It is our hope that the Celebration of Science and Humanity will be so well established that DURING THE REMAINDER OF THE YEAR we will all want to continue to work to make February the 12th a International day to recognize Verifiable Scientific Knowledge and to appreciate the connection of Humankind to the acquisition of this knowledge. \n** Please note ** This is not a Smithsonian sponsored event. This event is hosted by Veronica Chenik Gilmore and Camp Quest Chesapeake (Campquest.org) campers and counselors.\nThis is a free event and open to everyone! If you wish to join us\, please visit our Facebook page (Please like us for updates!) and message us for more information on location meet-up and instructions for the Darwin Day Scavenger Hunt. SUMMARY:Darwin Day: 12° Darwin Day in Correggio: Animals\, as we are.
DESCRIPTION:Emotions and intelligence in the animal kingdom\nWe\, Homo sapiens\, belong to the animal kingdom\, but we always had the presumption to hold us in higher absolute. Scientific knowledge and better observation has instead revealed many qualities in common with the animals: intelligence to emotions. The spread of the pet and its positive relational experience is receiving confirmations from what emerges from ethological studies. They are similar to us as much as we are like them.\nMeeting with prof. Roberto Marchesini\nRoberto Marchesini\, philosopher\, ethologist and zoo-antropologist teaches in several universities. In 1997 he founded SIUA (School of Human-Animal)\, of which he is still the director\, through which it promotes throughout Italy higher education courses on relationship with pets\, the pet therapy and in the field of child-animal relationship. It’s the author of over a hundred publications including: Italian-Dog Dictionary (Probe\, 2010)\, Against animal rights? (2014)\, Fundamentals of zoo-antropology (2014)\, Animal Epiphany. The overman as revelation (2014) and Ethology philosophical. In search of animal subjectivity (2016).

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Dinner: Chasing Birds with Satellites -- Taking the Pulse of Our Planet
DESCRIPTION:“Chasing Birds with Satellites–Taking the Pulse of the Planet” will be explicated by Yale’s Walter Jetz at the 9th Annual Darwin Day Dinner to be held Saturday evening February 11.\nThe popular event features cocktail hour\, dinner\, science quiz (with prizes!)\, and will take place at The Water’s Edge at Giovanni’s in Darien.\nWalter Jetz\, PhD\, is associate professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale University\, and Director of the new Yale Center for Biodiversity and Global Change.\nSpecies worldwide are undergoing changes in their distribution\, ecology\, and behavior with wide-ranging implications for them and for humans. Capturing these changes allows us to better manage their impacts and prevent extinctions.\nNew ‘big’ biodiversity data– citizen science records\, animal tracking data\, camera traps – combined with remote and aerial sensing technology now enable a more comprehensive capture of the pulse of our planet.\nWalter Jetz\, will showcase work in collaboration with NASA and biodiversity monitoring efforts worldwide.\nBanquet tables collaborate and enter a science quiz.
