SUMMARY:Exhibition: Darwin’s development of the theory of natural selection and the evolution of life.
DESCRIPTION:The science department of Montessori school would like to invite the school’s community to the exhibition prepared by 11th grade students on Darwin’s development of the theory of natural selection and the evolution of life. This event will take place during Darwin Day\, a global celebration that commemorates the anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin on 12 February 1809. This day is used to highlight Darwin’s contribution to science and to promote scientific enquiry in general.

SUMMARY:A Journey of Discovery The Evolution of a Landscape & Paradigm Shift
DESCRIPTION:Jim Baichtal(FS) is going to speak at the school to the students and community. \nThe Alexander Archipelago\, Southeastern Alaska. For years it was \nthought that glaciers covered much of the coastline of British \nColumbia and Southeastern Alaska to the edge of the continental \nmargin extending as a large uniform front. Nothing lived along the \ncoast until the ice retreated\, then plants and animals soon followed. \nExploration of the caves in Southeast Alaska yielded bones of \nmammals\, birds\, and fish dating to beyond the limits of radiocarbon \nmethods. Animals have been on the landscape for over 50\,000 years\, \nrefuting previous models of glaciation. \nOur new model for glaciation in involves the dynamic processes \nassociated with the effects of glacial ice on the land and sea levels. \nAs the glaciers advanced during the last ice age\, the weight of the ice \ndepressed the earth’s surface beneath it. As the glaciers grew the \nglobal sea levels fell. As the glaciers melted\, sea level rose\, and the \nlands depressed by the weight of the ice rapidly rebounded. \nThe first plants and animals in Southeast Alaska were living on this \nrapidly changing landscape\, first on the now flooded coastal plane\, \nthen on shorelines now well beyond the reach of the sea. Dr. Jim \nBaichtal\, Forest Geologist with the Tongass National Forest\, will \nexplain how shell deposits now stranded hundreds of meters above \nsea level helped change the “Wall of Ice” paradigm and define the \ncomplexity of Alaska’s glacial history.
