SUMMARY:DARWIN WEEK FEB 8-12
DESCRIPTION:On board Yacht La Pinta\, while exploring The Galapagos Islands\, we are celebrating Darwin Week with a series of talks and lectures related to Charles Darwin’s works. On Feb 8 we analyzed the critical thinking on Charles Darwin after writing a list of pros & cons as to why marry Emma Wedgewood\, his first cousin. On Feb 9 our Expedition Leader\, Mr. Ramiro Jacome\, talked about the Genealogy of Charles Darwin in order to undertstand how his family developed. On Feb 10\, it was the right time to look at the origin of the famous line “survival of the fittest”. Here we covered how Herbert Spencer coined this phrase\, and how Charles Darwin mentioned on the 5th edition of Origin of Species. Feb 11 saw the importance of the formal apology by The Church of England\, 126 years after his death. And\, last but not least\, the full biography lecture on Charles Darwin on Feb 12\, including the famous naming of Mount Darwin by Captain Robert Fitzroy on board HMS Beagle right on Charles Darwin’s 25th Birthday! Guests on board have been delighted with the exclusive celebration of our Darwin Week Feb 8-12\, in the Galapagos Islands.

SUMMARY:Darwin Week a Città della Scienza
SUMMARY:Berrios Orthodontics
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Berrios Orthodontics\, Northridge Orthodontist for Braces. Orthotropics is particularly valuable to kids\, as the young growing face is very malleable and even slight pressure from the lips or tongue over long periods can result in significant deformations. This is the type of growth that causes good-looking youngsters to become unattractive teenagers. Dr. Berrios is dedicated to helping parents recognize when a child’s face is growing incorrectly and understand what can be done to remedy it.

SUMMARY:The Darwin Day Lecture 2016 | How Darwinian is cultural evolution? | Thom Scott-Phillips
DESCRIPTION:The suggestion that culture changes in broadly Darwinian ways goes back to Darwin himself\, who suggested that his explanation of species change might also apply to language change. However the idea of studying culture in Darwinian terms fell out of favour for most of the 20th-century\, after some early anthropologists misused Darwin’s ideas\, for instance to defend distinctions between supposedly ‘primitive’ and ‘advanced’ cultures. The idea of cultural Darwinism was revived in the 1970s and 1980s in various forms\, the most well-known of which is Richard Dawkins’ idea of the meme. But how Darwinian is culture really? In this talk\, Dr Thom Scott-Phillips will discuss the history of the idea of cultural evolution\, and the prospects for a Darwinian science of culture. \nAbout Thom Scott-Phillips \nDr Thom Scott-Phillips is Senior Research Fellow in Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology\, at Durham University. His research focuses on evolutionary and cognitive approaches to the human mind and culture\, and in particular to communication and language. He employs a variety of research methods: controlled cognitive science experiments\, mathematical and computational models\, and theoretical\, cross-disciplinary synthesis. His first book\, Speaking Our Minds\, was published in November 2014. His major prizes and awards include an ESRC Future Research Leaders grant\, early-career fellowships from the ESRC\, the Leverhulme Trust\, and Durham University’s Addison Wheeler bequest\, the New Investigator Award from the European Human Behaviour and Evolution Association (2011)\, and the British Psychological Society’s prize for Outstanding Doctoral Research (2010). \nAbout Richard Dawkins \nProfessor Richard Dawkins is a renowned British ethologist\, evolutionary biologist\, and author. He is an emeritus fellow of New College\, Oxford\, and was the University of Oxford’s Professor for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 until 2008. His popular science books include The Selfish Gene (1976)\, The Extended Phenotype (1982)\, The Blind Watchmaker (1986)\, and The God Delusion (2006)\, and he is aso a Vice President of the British Humanist Association.

SUMMARY:Countering Darwin’s Crtitics: Correcting Creationist Complaints with Aron Ra

Aron Ra is the Texas state director of American Atheists\, host of the Ra-Men Podcast\, a public speaker\, science educator\, video producer\, blogger\, and vlogger. \n“Darwin’s critics have historically been almost exclusively creationist\, and their critiques have either not been based on science\, or were based on a misunderstanding of science\, resulting in a condemnation of character when all else failed.” – Aron Ra \nThis event is sponsored by the Secular Student Alliance an is open to the public.
