SUMMARY:Darwin Day 2015 Tyler\, Texas
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Darwin Day celebration features three main events: a keynote address\, evolutionary themed video screenings\, and a teacher development workshop. The keynote speaker for this year’s Darwin Day is Dr. Massimo Pigliucci\, K.D. Irani Professor of Philosophy at the City College of New York. In addition to his distinguished research career in evolutionary biology\, Dr. Pigliucci is the co-host of the Rationally Speaking Podcast and editor in chief for the online magazine Scientia Salon. His keynote address is called “Pseudoscience: Why Bother?” Other events include video screenings for three episodes of Neil Shubin’s PBS series “Your Inner Fish” and a teacher development workshop to provide teachers with activities about evolutionary biology to share with their classes.

SUMMARY:Darwin-Wallace Day at SUNY-ESF's Moon Library
DESCRIPTION:ESF will highlight research in evolutionary biology to celebrate the legacy of biological evolution’s co-discoverers: Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles Darwin.\nStudents taking Evolution (EFB 311) have created mini-posters highlighting some of the most compelling research in evolutionary biology from 2014 and 2015. The posters will be on display in Moon Library on the ESF campus until late February.\nBetween 12:45 and 1: 40 p.m. (known on campus as the weekly “college hour”) Wednesday\, Feb. 11 — the day before Darwin’s birthday\, and a month and three days after Wallace’s — Moon Library will give away a permanent book plate in honor of the occasion. The library will also feature a display of books by and about Darwin and Wallace. Members of the campus community are invited to stop by to admire the posters and enjoy a snack.\nAround the world\, people celebrate Darwin Day to honor Darwin’s contributions to our understanding of the life sciences. This year\, ESF added the lesser-known\, but no less intrepid\, naturalist Wallace to the billing in recognition of the fact that a pivotal moment in our modern understanding of biology was a joint presentation by Darwin and Wallace of their 1858 paper: “On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection.”

SUMMARY:Darwin Day with Lee Dugatkin Sponsored by Anímo Leadership HS in Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Lecture & Birthday Celebration: Topic: “The Evolution of Goodness” February 16th. 6-7:30 pm\, Moffet Elementary School Cafeteria\n11050 Larch Avenue\, Lennox\, CA 90304 (Just N of 105\, Between Hawthorne & Prairie) Free Parking Traducción al español\nRSVP: Information & reservations: Science Dep’t: marklewisfriedman@gmail.com or call 310.216.3277\nProfessor & Distinguished University Scholar in the Department of Biology at the University of Louisville. His main area of research is the evolution of social behavior and the evolution of cooperation\, the evolution of aggression\, the interaction between genetic and cultural evolution\, the evolution of antibiotic resistance\, and the evolution of risk-taking behavior. Dr. Dugatkin has spoken at over 100 major universities world-wide. He is the author of 150 science articles and books including: Cooperation among Animals: An Evolutionary Perspective\, Cheating Monkeys and Citizen Bees\, The Altruism Equation: Seven Scientists Search for the Origins of Goodness\, Principles of Animal Behavior and Evolution.\n“In a world supposedly governed by ruthless survival of the fittest\, why do we see acts of goodness in both animals and humans? This problem plagued Charles Darwin in the 1850s as he developed his theory of evolution through natural selection. Indeed\, Darwin worried that the goodness he observed in nature could be the Achilles heel of his theory. Ever since then\, scientists and other thinkers have engaged in a fierce debate about the origins of goodness that has dragged politics\, philosophy\, and religion into what remains a major question for evolutionary biology.” Lee Dugatkin

SUMMARY:What Would Darwin Say to Today's Creationists?
DESCRIPTION:A Darwin Day talk for Glasgow Skeptics. \nMany elements of the modern American creationist movement would be familiar to Darwin\, especially the argument from design\, which of course was very well known (and well-regarded) by educated people of his time. Young-Earth creationism\, on the other hand\, would be puzzling to him; Bishop Ussher’s 4004 BC age of the Earth was not considered mainstream Christian theology in the late 19th century\, though certainly the view had its adherents among some clergy. Darwin might have heard of the “scriptural geologists” who promoted a young-Earth view during the 19th century\, but like other scientists of his time\, he would have ignored them. \nThe current creationist strategy of disclaiming evolution as weak science would have seemed more familiar to him\, given the criticisms of evolution he encountered during his own time. And of course\, having attended a fine Scottish university\, internationally renowned for its science\, Darwin would have followed closely the recent effort to prevent the teaching of creationism in school science classes. \nEugenie Scott\, a former university professor\, served as the executive director of the National Center for Science Education (NCSE) from 1987 to 2014; she now serves as the chair of NCSE’s Advisory Council. She has been both a researcher and an activist in the creationism/evolution controversy for over twenty-five years. \nShe has received national recognition for her NCSE activities\, including awards from scientific societies\, educational societies\, skeptics groups\, and humanist groups. She holds nine honorary degrees\, from McGill\, Rutgers\, Mt. Holyoke\, the University of New Mexico\, Ohio State\, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, Colorado College\, the University of Missouri-Columbia\, and Chapman University. \nA dynamic speaker\, she offers stimulating and thought-provoking as well as entertaining lectures and workshops. Scott is the author of Evolution vs Creationism and co-editor\, with Glenn Branch\, of “Not in Our Classrooms: Why Intelligent Design Is Wrong for Our Schools”. \nAccessibility: As per the policy of the Admiral Bar\, access to the venue “can only be provided to patrons who are sufficiently mobile and capable of independently evacuating premises\, or with the minimum of assistance.” Unfortunately\, this leaves the basement inaccessible to most wheelchair users. \nPhoto credit to Susan Gerbic.
