SUMMARY:Darwin-Wallace Day at SUNY-ESF's Moon Library
DESCRIPTION:ESF will highlight research in evolutionary biology to celebrate the legacy of biological evolution’s co-discoverers: Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles Darwin.\nStudents taking Evolution (EFB 311) have created mini-posters highlighting some of the most compelling research in evolutionary biology from 2014 and 2015. The posters will be on display in Moon Library on the ESF campus until late February.\nBetween 12:45 and 1: 40 p.m. (known on campus as the weekly “college hour”) Wednesday\, Feb. 11 — the day before Darwin’s birthday\, and a month and three days after Wallace’s — Moon Library will give away a permanent book plate in honor of the occasion. The library will also feature a display of books by and about Darwin and Wallace. Members of the campus community are invited to stop by to admire the posters and enjoy a snack.\nAround the world\, people celebrate Darwin Day to honor Darwin’s contributions to our understanding of the life sciences. This year\, ESF added the lesser-known\, but no less intrepid\, naturalist Wallace to the billing in recognition of the fact that a pivotal moment in our modern understanding of biology was a joint presentation by Darwin and Wallace of their 1858 paper: “On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection.”

SUMMARY:Darwin Day 2015 (Singapore)
DESCRIPTION:Organised by the Humanist Society (Singapore) \nWe will be spending Darwin Day 2015 at the Singapore Botanical Gardens! The Gardens\, currently an applicant for UNESCO World Heritage Site status\, is a world of greenery and elegance. \nACTIVITIES \nThe Society will be conducting a family-friendly competition\, called the “Darwin Photo Challenge”\, near the Eco-Lake\, about 5 minutes walk the Botanical Gardens MRT station (Circle Line). Participants in groups of 3 to 4 will run around the gardens within a 45-minute window\, taking photographs of trees and animals listed on a gamesheet called the “Darwin Tree of Life.” Participants can either bring a camera or use their mobile devices. The top two groups in the competition will be given prizes. More details will be revealed on the day. \nWe will also be having a self-guided tour of the Evolution Gardens. The 9.9-hectare tells the evolutionary story of plant life on Earth throughout the ages. It shows the amazing story of how plants gave us life\, and how\, long before humans arrived\, plants started to evolve into the myriad complex\, wonderful life forms that we see today. \nAfter the event ends\, we invite you to join us a casual Darwin Day lunch at Bar Bar Black Sheep near the Botanic Gardens MRT station. This lunch\, however\, is self-paid and optional. \nSo\, join us for a morning of fun and exploration! Please RSVP early as it will help the organisers estimate the amount of water and game materials needed\, minimising wastage. \nFees: $5 for members\, $8 for non-members \nMap of the garden: @[NjQyMTgzOTU5MjA4MTA3Omh0dHBcYS8vdjM2MHByb3BlcnR5LmNvbS93cC1jb250ZW50L3VwbG9hZHMvMjAxNC8wOS9Cb3RhbmljTWFwLmpwZzo6:http://v360property.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/BotanicMap.jpg] \n**Gathering point: Please meet at the gate outside Botanic Gardens MRT\, NOT the Tanglin Gate entrance. SUMMARY:Omaha Metro Area Humanist Association (OMAHA) Darwin Day Event
DESCRIPTION:OMAHA will be hosting a special showing of the NOVA program “Darwin’s Darkest Hour” in celebration of Darwin Day. This the two-hour drama was produced for the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of his seminal work On the Origin of the Species. \nIn 1858 Charles Darwin received a letter from naturalist Alfred Wallace\, explaining his own theory of evolution. This was the trigger event that led to the publication of Darwin’s seminal theory on the origin of species. \nWe will provide coffee\, tea and popcorn\, and you are welcome to bring your own beverages and snacks if you prefer. Following the program everyone is invited to join us at a nearby eatery for dinner. The event is free and open to the public with RSVP to our meetup group. We hope to see you there.
