The keynote speaker for this year’s Darwin Day is Dr. Massimo Pigliucci\, K.D. Irani Professor of Philosophy at the City College of New York. In addition to his distinguished research career in evolutionary biology\, Dr. Pigliucci is the co-host of the Rationally Speaking Podcast and editor in chief for the online magazine Scientia Salon. His keynote address is called “Pseudoscience: Why Bother?” Other events include video screenings for three episodes of Neil Shubin’s PBS series “Your Inner Fish” and a teacher development workshop to provide teachers with activities about evolutionary biology to share with their classes.

SUMMARY:Darwin-Wallace Day at SUNY-ESF's Moon Library
DESCRIPTION:ESF will highlight research in evolutionary biology to celebrate the legacy of biological evolution’s co-discoverers: Alfred Russel Wallace and Charles Darwin.\nStudents taking Evolution (EFB 311) have created mini-posters highlighting some of the most compelling research in evolutionary biology from 2014 and 2015. The posters will be on display in Moon Library on the ESF campus until late February.\nBetween 12:45 and 1: 40 p.m. (known on campus as the weekly “college hour”) Wednesday\, Feb. 11 — the day before Darwin’s birthday\, and a month and three days after Wallace’s — Moon Library will give away a permanent book plate in honor of the occasion. The library will also feature a display of books by and about Darwin and Wallace. Members of the campus community are invited to stop by to admire the posters and enjoy a snack.\nAround the world\, people celebrate Darwin Day to honor Darwin’s contributions to our understanding of the life sciences. This year\, ESF added the lesser-known\, but no less intrepid\, naturalist Wallace to the billing in recognition of the fact that a pivotal moment in our modern understanding of biology was a joint presentation by Darwin and Wallace of their 1858 paper: “On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection.”

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:We Select You Naturally! \nJoin us on Valentine’s Day to celebrate the life and work of Charles Darwin. Come celebrate with us! \nJoin us for \n• Evolution Raffle \n• Phylum Feud \n• Taste of Camp Quest \n• Joseph Lorenzo keynote talk \n• A reading of the children’s book Grandmother Fish \n• Snacks and cake (we encourage people to bring a dish to share.) \n• and more! \nSeattle Atheists will be teaming up with Camp Quest Northwest for a fabulous party. Camp Quest provides summer camps for kids that teach critical thinking skills in a secular environment. Our friends from Camp Quest will be providing childcare for kids 5 and up with donations benefiting this great organization. They will give the kids a “taste” of Camp Quest that is sure to make them want sign up for a week this summer. \nThe suggested donation of $10/ kid for the Taste of Camp Quest will help support Camp Quest to recruit and train counsellors and to subsidize camp costs for low income families. Please register your children for the camp quest room in advance here: https://campquest.wufoo.com/forms/darwin-day-2015/ \nFor the toddlers in attendance we will be joined for a reading of Jonathan Tweet’s children’s book about evolution Grandmother Fish and have some fun with an evolution dance\, as well as crafts and toys. \nThis year’s key note speech will be delivered by Joseph Lorenzo from the Department of Anthropology & Museum Studies at Central Washington University where he established the Molecular Anthropology Laboratory. This interesting talk will be titled Ancient Hominines and Ancient DNA: What New Technology Is Telling Us About Our Past. \nWe will have snacks and cake but would like to encourage people to bring a pot-luck dish to share. \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Teeth Are Now Giving The Orders: Darwinian Selection For Biological Rhythms And Your Life History Is All About To Change
DESCRIPTION:NYU School of Dentistry Professor Timothy Bromage\, Ph.D.\, demonstrates how the evolution of teeth plays an important role in shaping human life. \nThe adaptation shared by all light-sensitive organisms is the to and fro of their biology in phase with daily astronomical rhythms (e..g.\, oscillations of metabolism\, physiology\, behavior)\, manifesting as circadian rhythms. Dental hard tissues reflect these cycles\, but unbeknownst to most people is that they also provide longer periodic signals. The genomics of daily biological rhythms has in recent decades received much attention\, but surprisingly little is known of long period rhythms for which the teeth\, it turns out\, are the story tellers. But more than the story\, more than just instructions\, teeth reflect strict commands handed down from the genome that define how life is and works; everything from the size of a kidney to lifespan\, and everything in between. \nProfessor Bromage directs the Hard Tissue Research Unit (HTRU)\, a mineralized tissue preparation and imaging technology development laboratory of the Department of Biomaterials and Biomimetics\, NYUCD. Recently\, he has reported on a hitherto unrecognized chronobiological rhythm in bone microstructure that corresponds to a previously observed but enigmatic enamel formation rhythm in mammals\, establishing the basis for understanding how chronobiology and organismal life history evolution are integrated. \nProfessor Bromage supplements laboratory research with African Late Pliocene paleontological fieldwork of significance to human evolutionary research\, the surveys of which have recovered the oldest known representative of the human genus\, Homo rudolfensis\, 2.4 Ma\, as well as its contemporary\, Paranthropus boisei\, from the shores of Lake Malawi. Fieldwork on Late Pleistocene pygmy elephant and pygmy hippopotamus localities in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are also ongoing\, which provides a natural experiment of relevance to interpretations of modern human dental reduction. \nProfessor Bromage is recipient of the 2010 Max Planck Prize in the Life Sciences (paleobiomics; emphasis in Human Evolution)\, is Honorary Professor of La Salle University\, Madrid\, Spain\, and is Honorary Research Fellow of the Department of Paleoanthropology\, Senckenberg Research Institute\, Frankfurt\, Germany.
