(Joana Owens & Sarah Parker moderators)\nLunch not provided – Brown bag \nThursday Feb. 12th Darwin’s Birthday!!!!!!\n12:30 – 1:30 Reid Auditorium SELS Speaker – Rebecca Kimball UF\, “Avian Evolution in the Era of Big Data” http://people.biology.ufl.edu/rkimball/Home.html\nTalk Abstract: Birds are among the most well-studied organisms. However\, understanding the evolution of different clades of birds has been problematic. While some authors have suggested that phylogenetic relationships among orders might not be resolved\, recent large-scale and whole genome studies have shown an ability to resolve these relationships. With the backbone of the avian tree of life elucidated\, an effort to build the entire avian tree of life using molecular sequence data is underway. Such studies are showing that previously accepted relationships within genera and families are often incorrect\, but new data is allowing these problems to be resolved. This will allow us to begin rigorously exploring the factors leading to the diversity of birds we see today.\nPizza Lunch provided\nCake for Darwin’s Birthday \n5:00 -7:00 Riverhouse Paper discussion: “Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution”\nStudents\, Faculty and staff are invited to read this classic paper and come to a discussion session.\n**All those that participate will be entered in a Raffle for a Darwin Prize!!!!!!**\nThe article and questions for journal discussion will be emailed to students. \nFriday Feb.13th\n12:00 – 1:00 Reid Auditorium: Evolution Music & Talent Show\nKim Beasley and students will perform Darwin/Evolution inspired music\, followed by an evolution talent show open to all JU students/faculty/staff. Judged by the audience and prizes!!! (Darwin bobblehead 1st prize\, Darwin fish 2nd prize). SUMMARY:International Darwin Day in Taichung - 國際達爾文節
DESCRIPTION:It is the vision of International Darwin Day to “reflect and act on the principles of intellectual bravery\, perpetual curiosity\, scientific thinking\, and hunger for truth as embodied in Charles Darwin.” In honor of these principles and in celebration with groups around the world\, Taichung Skeptics in the Pub and Taichung Atheists\, Freethinkers\, and Humanists invites you to join us as we observe International Darwin Day at the National Museum of Natural Science. \nAll are welcome on what we hope will be a day of conscious consideration on the ways scientific thought\, curiosity\, and intellectual bravery have been and continue to be a source for the betterment and inspiration of human kind. \nDarwin Day officially falls on the birthday of the scientist himself\, February 12th\, but to encourage more people to take part\, we will observe on Wednesday\, February 11 to take advantage of the Museum’s free admission before 10 am on Wednesdays policy. We believe cost shouldn’t keep anyone from celebrating this great day. If you can’t make it on the 11th\, or have children you would like to take to the museum who have school during our event\, we encourage you to visit the museum any day that week and celebrate Darwin Day on your own or in small groups.

SUMMARY:SSA Darwin Day
DESCRIPTION:Darwin Day is an international celebration of human achievement and scientific inquiry. Held on or around Charles Darwin’s birthday\,February 12\, people gather to pay tribute to him\, to learn more about evolution\, and to marvel at the natural world he so vividly described and explained. \nAt a time when anti-science groups are elevating their attacks on Darwin and the Theory of Evolution\, it is important that we recognize his significant contributions to our understanding of the human species and the nature of life. \nWe stand up with scientists and science teachers around the world to celebrate the relevance and integrity of Darwin’s Great Idea: “…from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been\, and are being\, evolved.” \nThis year Florida State’s Secular Student Alliance will be hosting a Darwin Day celebration on Wednesday\, February 11th!

SUMMARY:Darwin Day Lecture: Nanotechnology - Size Matters with Thomas Deits\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Nanotechnology\, as many of us know\, means the study of matter at the scale of the nanometer – a billionth of a meter. But why is a simple length measurement the basis for an entire scientific discipline? After all\, we don’t have a discipline called ‘millimetertechnology.’ The reason that unlike the constancy of the properties of matter that we understand intuitively in our daily lives (a ton of gold or an ounce of gold is still gold\, right?)\, when gold (or other matter) is reduced to nanometer-sized particles\, its properties can change radically. \nTo illustrate one of the new properties that has emerged from the study of matter at the nanometer scale\, we will delve more deeply into the extremely useful and really quite entertaining property of superhydrophobicity. This is a new property of matter that emerges only at the nanometer scale but is easily observed in our daily lives\, if you know where to look. We will examine the origins of the scientific study of this phenomenon in the plant world and move on to the subsequent development of applications that are already beginning to impact our daily lives. We will even speculate about the role of superhydrohobicity in Buddhist philosophy. We will manufacture one of these surfaces on the tabletop and everyone will have the opportunity to play with a variety of superhydrophobic materials. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Thomas Deits has a broad background in sciences from chemical process technology to bionanotechnology\, and is committed to encouraging students to pursue careers in STEM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Mathematics). As “Dr. Nano” he makes engaging presentations about the new field of nanotechnology to help inspire students to consider STEM careers. He established NanoDay at Impression 5 Science Center in Lansing\, Michigan and is presently serving as Project Director for a new initiative in STEM education called Innovation 5. \nDr. Deits received his Bachelor’s degree in chemistry and history from the University of California\, San Diego and his Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry at the University of Washington. He has served as Director of Molecular Biology at MBI International and as Chairperson of the Science Department at Lansing Community College. He is presently an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University and also serves as a Mentor for the National Science Foundation Mentor-Connect project. He is also active in the formation of the new Institute for Advanced Composite Manufacturing Innovation\, a $259 MM project in which MSU is one of the four lead institutions. \nMeetings are open to the Public. After the meeting\, join us at Vitale’s Restaurant\, 834 Leonard NE\, Grand Rapids\, MI to socialize.\nCost: FREE / Suggested Donation $5. Ways to Support CFI & Donate Online
