However\, understanding the evolution of different clades of birds has been problematic. While some authors have suggested that phylogenetic relationships among orders might not be resolved\, recent large-scale and whole genome studies have shown an ability to resolve these relationships. With the backbone of the avian tree of life elucidated\, an effort to build the entire avian tree of life using molecular sequence data is underway. Such studies are showing that previously accepted relationships within genera and families are often incorrect\, but new data is allowing these problems to be resolved. This will allow us to begin rigorously exploring the factors leading to the diversity of birds we see today.\nPizza Lunch provided\nCake for Darwin’s Birthday \n5:00 -7:00 Riverhouse Paper discussion: “Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution”\nStudents\, Faculty and staff are invited to read this classic paper and come to a discussion session.\n**All those that participate will be entered in a Raffle for a Darwin Prize!!!!!!**\nThe article and questions for journal discussion will be emailed to students. \nFriday Feb.13th\n12:00 – 1:00 Reid Auditorium: Evolution Music & Talent Show\nKim Beasley and students will perform Darwin/Evolution inspired music\, followed by an evolution talent show open to all JU students/faculty/staff. SUMMARY:FestEVOLVE at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Evolution of Life\nFebruary 10-15\, 2015\nIncluded with museum admission or membership \nDid you know mushrooms are more related to animals than plants? The tree of life is filled with intriguing connections and links\, thanks to natural selection. Diversity on the planet is guided by the principles of natural selection and evolution\, made famous by past and current scientists\, including Charles Darwin. \nJoin us in celebrating the theories\, the people who introduced the world to these concepts\, and the ways current scientists study evolution. Museum tours\, activities\, and crafts will have an evolutionary and natural history focus. \nAll FestEVOLVE activities are appropriate for a variety of ages. \nMuseum Programming \nMuseum Tours: Daily from February 10-15\, 2015 at 3:00 p.m.\, plus an additional tour on February 14 and 15 at 11:30 a.m.\nOn this thought-provoking evolution tour\, stories focus on biodiversity of the past\, how species change and survive over time\, evolution in the modern world\, and what we know about relationships among living things – including how humans fit in. \nNaturalist 101: Birds of Prey\, Daily at 12:30 p.m.\nCharles Darwin was best known for being an outstanding naturalist. Develop your birding and naturalist skills through a series of activities designed to help you identify common birds. Discover the amazing world of hawks\, eagles\, owls\, and falcons with our education team. \nPuppet Show: February 14 and 15 at 10:30 a.m.\nIn ancient seas\, lots of unusual animals evolved to live in oceans. Journey through time with Harriet\, a curious tortoise\, and discover prehistoric organisms through the fossil record.
