After February 12th 2005 our efforts concentrated on developing a greatly enhanced outreach capability, including and expanding the number of languages into which this website will be translated for the convenience of the International Community. In addition there have been a dramatic increase in the number of contacts and invitations sent out to JOIN US and Celebrate Science and Humanity. By the winter of 2006 our outreach efforts had generated substantial MEDIA attention and word-of-mouth expansion was occurring.

Professor Colin Groves from the Australian National University, who will discuss Homo floresiensis, or the “Hobbit”, which caused a sensation when its discovery was announced late in 2004. So tiny, so unexpected, so late in time yet so primitive - and right on Australia’s doorstep. Since then it has been accused of being anything from an australopithecine to a bird-headed dwarf. What was it, really, and how does it fit into the human family tree?

We celebrate Darwin's birthday with a potluck meal made up of as many kinds of organisms as possible, to remember our origin as omnivores and our relatedness to other lineages.

Contributions to the potluck, should be labelled with the names of all the species they're composed of, and since these potlucks are scored by the total number of species and higher taxa represented, and at the EOBM since 1999 they have turned out to be largely vegetarian, the best effect on the total diverisity of the feast is achieved by bringing dishes featuring Fungi, bacterially fermented foods identified to species, and invertebrate Animals.

The potluck will follow a general meeting of the EOBM (15h00) to decide on options for the future of the museum.

“Grandes eventos en la historia evolutiva de la tierra” (Great events of the evolutionary history of the Earth)

Lecture by Dr. Jack Schuster, head of the systematic entomology laboratory at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. Interests include biogeography, systematics and behavior of passalid beetles as applied to forest conservation. He is also a rock and folk musician since his time at U. of Michigan (B.S and M.S biology) and U. of Florida (Ph.D. entomology). Tours of his rock band have resulted in the discovery of new species of passalid beetles.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Professor Schuster will talk about the most importants geological, climatic and biological events in the history of the world. The talk will take place at the 2nd floor, reading room of Ludwig von Mises Library. Dr. Schuster participated in the first ever celebration of Darwin Day in Guatemala on February 12, 2004. How dangerous was Darwin’s science? What role did he give God? Is there any truth in the story of his deathbed conversion?
Darwin is a coveted ally. All manner of groups have appealed to him, seeking support for their views - atheists, secularists and humanists; capitalists, socialists and anarchists; liberal Christians, evangelicals and even some fundamentalists. But what about Darwin himself? How did he see his own identity in an age when science was the preserve of Christian gentlemen and society was dominated by the Church? Did he take sides? Born to wealth and respectability, groomed at Cambridge for the cloth, he returned from a global voyage to tackle that pressing `mystery of mysteries,’ how living species originate. The subject was an ideological minefield; he had much to lose. How then did he negotiate it? Having begun with God, did Providence see him through? Who was “the Devil’s Chaplain”?

Darwin College: Cambridge University has hosted a public lecture series for the past 20 years featuring speakers from every academic discipline and many fields of public life. For the current year 2005 the series starts on January 21st in Lady Michell Hall on Sidgwick Ave. at 5:30 pm and runs 8 week to March 11th. Title: Darwin at Downe proposed World Heritage Site - website launch ( Public )

Charles Darwin’s home and neighbourhood at Downe, in London Borough of Bromley, England are being proposed as a World Heritage Site and a website is being launched. The UK Government's Department of Culture, Media and Sport intends to put forward ‘Darwin at Downe’ as the UK’s World Heritage Site nomination bid for February 2006. If the UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribes the site in summer 2007, ‘Darwin at Downe’ will join the 26 other UK World Heritage sites.

Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection is recognised as one of the most powerful and fundamentally important ideas in present day science, and indeed in philosophy and other central aspects of human culture. Consequently, we think that his ideas have outstanding universal value.

The vision of this project is to protect, conserve, enhance and sustainably promote the inspirational landscape important to Charles Darwin’s scientific ideas on the understanding of the natural world and humankind’s role.
