Dr. Oliver will be speaking about the hierarchical and evolutionary character of the natural world generally; viz., complex structures emerging over time from simpler structures and elementary particles to the periodic table and life. His own current work is aimed at exhibiting the evolutionary structure of even the simplest quantum system of a spinning atom: “Yes, there are individual states, species of states, and randomness in interactions that play a role in the random mutations in DNA. So the quantum nature of matter is essential to evolution.”
