After February 12th 2005 our efforts concentrated on developing a greatly enhanced outreach capability, including and expanding the number of languages into which this website will be translated for the convenience of the International Community. In addition there have been a dramatic increase in the number of contacts and invitations sent out to JOIN US and Celebrate Science and Humanity. By the winter of 2006 our outreach efforts had generated substantial MEDIA attention and word-of-mouth expansion was occurring.

Professor Colin Groves from the Australian National University, who will discuss Homo floresiensis, or the “Hobbit”, which caused a sensation when its discovery was announced late in 2004. So tiny, so unexpected, so late in time yet so primitive - and right on Australia’s doorstep. Since then it has been accused of being anything from an australopithecine to a bird-headed dwarf. We celebrate Darwin's birthday with a potluck meal made up of as many kinds of organisms as possible, to remember our origin as omnivores and our relatedness to other lineages.

Contributions to the potluck, should be labelled with the names of all the species they're composed of, and since these potlucks are scored by the total number of species and higher taxa represented, and at the EOBM since 1999 they have turned out to be largely vegetarian, the best effect on the total diverisity of the feast is achieved by bringing dishes featuring Fungi, bacterially fermented foods identified to species, and invertebrate Animals.

The potluck will follow a general meeting of the EOBM (15h00) to decide on options for the future of the museum.

“Grandes eventos en la historia evolutiva de la tierra” (Great events of the evolutionary history of the Earth)

Lecture by Dr. Jack Schuster, head of the systematic entomology laboratory at Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. Interests include biogeography, systematics and behavior of passalid beetles as applied to forest conservation. He is also a rock and folk musician since his time at U. of Michigan (B.S and M.S biology) and U. of Florida (Ph.D. entomology). Tours of his rock band have resulted in the discovery of new species of passalid beetles.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Professor Schuster will talk about the most importants geological, climatic and biological events in the history of the world. The talk will take place at the 2nd floor, reading room of Ludwig von Mises Library. Dr. Schuster participated in the first ever celebration of Darwin Day in Guatemala on February 12, 2004. Darwin is a coveted ally. All manner of groups have appealed to him, seeking support for their views - atheists, secularists and humanists; capitalists, socialists and anarchists; liberal Christians, evangelicals and even some fundamentalists. But what about Darwin himself? How did he see his own identity in an age when science was the preserve of Christian gentlemen and society was dominated by the Church? Did he take sides? Born to wealth and respectability, groomed at Cambridge for the cloth, he returned from a global voyage to tackle that pressing `mystery of mysteries,’ how living species originate. The subject was an ideological minefield; he had much to lose. How then did he negotiate it? Having begun with God, did Providence see him through? Who was “the Devil’s Chaplain”?

For the current year 2005 the series starts on January 21st in Lady Michell Hall on Sidgwick Ave. at 5:30 pm and runs 8 week to March 11th. Title: Darwin at Downe proposed World Heritage Site - website launch ( Public )

Charles Darwin’s home and neighbourhood at Downe, in London Borough of Bromley, England are being proposed as a World Heritage Site and a website is being launched. The UK Government's Department of Culture, Media and Sport intends to put forward ‘Darwin at Downe’ as the UK’s World Heritage Site nomination bid for February 2006. If the UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribes the site in summer 2007, ‘Darwin at Downe’ will join the 26 other UK World Heritage sites.

Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection is recognised as one of the most powerful and fundamentally important ideas in present day science, and indeed in philosophy and other central aspects of human culture. Consequently, we think that his ideas have outstanding universal value.

The vision of this project is to protect, conserve, enhance and sustainably promote the inspirational landscape important to Charles Darwin’s scientific ideas on the understanding of the natural world and humankind’s role.

Center for Inquiry Florida is sponsoring a conference themed "Will Our Democracy Survive? Progress in a Regressive Society."

The conference will begin with a banquet dinner Feb. 11, including a Darwin day address by philospoher Paul Kurtz and cake.

At 7:00 P.M. Jeanette Madea will speak on ”Alchemy to Skepticism: Turning Lead into Gold” Dr. Madea, senior professor of chemistry at Broward Community College, will examine how the history of science is interwoven with the history of religion, politics, world exploration, and all aspects of human activity. The evolution of modern science, specifically chemistry, was impeded until recent centuries by the prevalence of mystical thinking, superstition, dogma and repression. Until these were replaced by skepticism and the scientific method, significant progress in sciences such as chemistry was virtually impossible. But along the way were important accidental discoveries and some wonderful stories.

Why Darwin Matters

February 12th, the birth date of Charles Darwin in Shrewsbury, England, has
been designated "Darwin Day" across the world. Along with a number of other
events throughout the year, designed to improve the public's awareness and
understanding of the evolutionary sciences, we have had much success in
gathering our forces to counter the misinformation spread by creationist
groups and to celebrate what may perhaps have been the greatest discovery of
all time. In this presentation we will revisit some of the highlights of
Charles Darwin's life, the important role he played in history, the great
developments of the past 150 years, and the battles that continue to be
waged around the globe, especially here in the USA.

Amanda Chesworth is Educational Director for CSICOP. She is the founder and
creator of DarwinDay.org along with Bob Stephens and Massimo Pigliucci.
Amanda holds a BSc in Interdisciplinary Sciences and is completing a
graduate degree in Science Education. She is editor and contributor of the
book "Darwin Day Collection: The Single Best Idea Ever" which will be on
sale for $15 (reg: $30) at the event. One of Amanda's fondest memories of
her passion for Darwin and the evolutionary sciences is having been charged
with carrying a small envelope of Neanderthal bones from the Natural History
Museum in London back to the University of Guelph, in Canada. Part of her
journey took place on "the tube" in London and was where her interest in
bridging the gap between "high" and "low" society came to fruition.

Anthropologist-songwriter Richard Milner gives his legendary performance of
"Charles Darwin: Live & In Concert" for a three-night run in New York - his
only NY performances this year. Milner, formerly Stephen Jay Gould's editor
at the American Museum of Natural History, is author of "The Encyclopedia of
Evolution" and "Charles Darwin: Evolution of a Naturalist."

"Darwin," Milner's one-man musical, celebrates the great naturalist's
birthday, February 12, 1809. Performances are Feb 10, 11, and 12th, 2005, at
the Where Eagles Dare Theater, 347 W 36th Street (between 8th and 9th
Avenues), New York, at 8:00 PM. The show is presented by the New York
Atheists, Inc.

During this program a panel offers a description of Intelligent Design as an "explanation" of natural living phenomena and the personalities promoting it. The total Darwin Archive consists of over 15,000 letters and several thousands bits of papers with notes and observations. Dr. Kritsky determined that these letters and notes reveal aspects of Darwin that were not disclosed in his published writings. This presentation will examine some of these notes to reveal some of the unknown facts about Darwin and his thinking.

Last year Dr. Kritsky, professor of biology at the College of Mount St. Joseph, took time out of his busy schedule as a leading authority on cicadas to give us a wonderful talk about Charles Darwin as a person. We celebrate Darwin Day for Charles Darwin's imaginative intellect and his profound effects on our society and our understanding of the natural world. The Northern Virginia Ethical Society is proud to host Dr. Steven Goldberg to speak on the Ethical Considerations of Stem Cell Research. Dr. Goldberg is a Research Fellow at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. He serves on the boards of both the American Humanist Association and the Washington Area Secular Humanists, and is a faculty member of the Institute for Humanist Studies.

Embryonic stem cells hold great promise for use in regenerative medicine, and as tools to help researchers better understand various physiological and pathological processes. Their use, however, remains highly controversial because of widely disparate views on the moral status of embryos. In this talk, Dr. Goldberg will provide an overview of the issues underlying this controversy, including the nature of both embryonic and adult stem cells, their potential therapeutic and research value, and the key ethical considerations involved in their use.
